How to get the shields of your exploration ship right?

Higher G planets means one has to be more mindful as to their own personal total landing process. Wanna do it in the shortest amount of time, gonna need some good shields, take you time, need less shields.
I avoid HIGH G planets (anything over 4G) because whatever would break my neck IRL breaks my immersion in a game with no AG or initial dampeners. "Break my neck" is an exaggeration, but I'll not be getting up and walking to my SRV bay on a 5+ G planet. Heck, doing this at 3G would be a chore, especially since I spend most my time in very low G.

Spreadsheets and reading stuff on forums might suggest so, but I've tested most of my exploring ships in the game changing only dirty to clean drive, and the difference was great towards clean drive in scooping, scooping while jumping, and high g planet movement. It only costs some special effects mats to try it out yourself..

Is this a recent test?
Because about 1 year ago i did tested clean versus dirty (i was really biased towards clean drives back then) and in normal space clean drives were noticeably better in terms of thermals, but in Supercruise (scooping, fsd charging, anything) there wasn't any indication of them being thermally better

On that note, I think I'm right (this time) in saying that it's always better to fit a bigger set of D-rated thrusters instead of smaller A-rated ones.

For example, instead of fitting 5A thrusters to this Annie, you get almost exactly the same performance, but 4t less mass and less power usage, by fitting 6D thrusters.
But doesn't the larger D rated thruster require more distro?
Also, for me personally, I can't justify wasting pharmaceutical isolators to G5 D rated thrusters.

I'm not ditching the shield. On the build I posted, going without shields gives me 1 extra lightyear. 1 light year
Can you imagine being 20,000ly away from the nearest space station, make a mistake, and have your ship explode during landing on a 10G planet, and all of that because of 1 extra lightyear

Even worse would be to boost instead of deploying the Landing gear when preparing to dock at the station after 1 year out in the black :D
(common mistake on XB at least, since Boost is on B and landing gear is B+pad-down)

also curious about this.

I used to use clean drives on certain ships. Now, I don't, all those ships have been converted.

The heat difference over dirty is small, and only seen when maneuvering, boosting, accelerating and slowing down. Once a constant speed is reached, just cruisin', it reverts to the cool state. And as mentioned before, clean drives draw more power, in essence cutting in to the thermal load you are trying to save by mounting clean drives in the first place. If someone is going clean for scoop rate I think you'll be disappointed.

For me, clean drives as currently implemented are not worth the trade off. Your ship will be much slower and not much cooler, and then only some of the time. YMMV.

One can alter there distro by making sure to turn off any and all non essential items not needed. Example, if one is in process of flight, then they don't need any power dedicated to the the availability of the SRV. Shutting it off vs just setting a higher priority makes a difference in power availability of any or all other components if and when needed.

Example, most know how to set priorities and do so. Thus with you priorities set the way you want, and time the duration of your laser's before complete depletion. Don't adjust the priorities, shut off any and everything non essential to the process of firing your laser's and time the duration again. They will have additional power available, thus last longer.

Personally, I make sure to have all priorities set. Then depending on my agenda at the time, make sure to shut off any and all non-essential components not conducive to my agenda. What one considers essential is up to themselves. Because one can be interdicted at any time, a noob might think that shutting off weapons would be asinine. But an experience Cmdr, who know how to win a mini game more times than not, and if it's the later, knows how to low or high waking, can and could considered any weapons to be non=essential. I personally flew a Python for a year and a half hauling passenger point to point as well as sightseeing, hauled all types of cargo and didn't have ANY weapons installed any where. And not once during that time though I was interdicted hundreds of times, did I ever need them.

Now I have weapons and actually seek out various combat situations, thus i now have to make sure they have sufficient power to get me through any and all situations I get myself into. And I do so by making sure that any and all components not conducive to the combat and or ability to do a statistical retreat (run) is shut off.

This.

If you're going to fly inverted on high-g planets, or insist on boosting upwards and then engaging your FSD then okay. Clean drives will be beneficial to your play-style.
Otherwise, you're just losing roughly 10% of your performance and adding to your power requirements for no good reason.

There's a place for Clean drives if you're determined on building a cold-running ship for combat or doing sneaky stuff but they don't really help much with exploration.

I thought you quit?
If I had a credit for every time one of you idiots followed me into some random thread with the sole purpose of spreading fake news, I could afford my own fleet carrier!

Indeed! That's what makes this different than a "I quit" thread. I'll be back in June to see a fleet carrier for the first time (no beta for me). And I'll be back for the next CG or II or "wow, something new is happening in the galaxy" moment, even though that might not be until 2021. I may even go exploring or mining for a few hours during a cold, rainy day. But the days of daily grind and commitment (ie - "active duty") are over, at least until New Era brings truly new content. That means no more BGS, no personal Fleet Carrier, no more "it takes 5 hours of grind to do XYZ" gameplay for me, except perhaps to prepare a couple more ships for quick "jump in, jump out" sessions.
Now how about YOU feel free to "quit" bothering me, hmm?

can someone fill me in on the drama?
Just a bunch of toxic white knights who follow me all over this forum harassing me. I keep reporting them, and hopefully the moderators will get them off my back so I can post in peace. Click on my quote in my previous post for the entire thread if you want to see why they are all stirred up like a bunch of Murder Hornets.

ps - "right now" is relative. Right NOW I'm at work (from home), not being overly productive.

Don't flatter yourself - I'm not following you 😇. I just keep stumbling across you in every slightly amusing thread I need to keep reading to keep just on this side of insanity right now. If I had known you'd react like this, I'd have added a ;) to the message that prompted your reaction - sorry.
As for following (checks user profile just to be sure) - I would have said I'd follow nobody, but there are indeed two people in my "following" list. One of them was last seen in 2018, the other June 2019.

🤐 and 🤗
