HTC Vive resolution and  focus

You nailed it! either steamvr code or frontier code does try to preserve performance with downgrading the graphics. Did many tests (downclocking my gfx card).
When downclocking every steam vr demo/game etc. looks jaggy... the more you downclock it, the jaggier things look.

I think thats why some people here think it looks really bad and some others do not bother.
So thats really an issue by design and i think the coders will not be able to do anything with big impact to it.
Maybe the 1080 gtx of nvidia will get things better.

I am glad you confirmed this for me. I suspected that when Frontier announced their official VR compatibility there had to make some trade-offs behind the scenes because this game can be a beast when it comes to graphic quality. This does explain the various complaints on the quality of Elite since the VR launch.

The new pascal cards will make a huge difference once the single pass stereo rendering is coded in. I was ready to buy the 1080 today because I thought this feature is automatic with all games but I read an article stating that vrworks and the single pass rendering needs to be implemented by each game. So it will be a waiting game. Who knows when Frontier will get to it but when they do I will pick up a 1080 once their back in stock. I can wait since I own a Titan. The average 20 percent gain is not worth it without single pass rendering.

But once it's it in, bam, no more frame rate issues and truly higher quality VR experiences. To those that don't know, single-pass rendering effectively cuts the graphic card workload in half since it no longer needs to render an image per each eye panel. This is a godsend moving forward.

i have exact the same problem. Am i allowed to report a bug with this video or can you do it?

EDIT: Reported

Also reported to bring light to the issue.

Out of curiosity, I also mirrored my display only to be greeted by this abomination.

Yeah also in the vive here and there was no improvement. despite running an i7-4790k@5Ghz and dual gtx980's (one disabled until VR SLI becomes a thing...probably never  ) , I still couldn't play it at 1.5 SS, just a juddery mess . The best option for me really is set VR LOW then turn the AA to maximum, I don't lose too many frames unless i'm in heavy combat and it helps smooth out the jaggedness around the cockpit.

It's such a pain. I can also run this game at maximum details on our 60 inch 4k TV, but then I have to play it as a pixellated mess on the Vive.

I still like playing it on the vive though, the immersion is just amazing but I would love to hear more feedback on what is going on behind the scenes!

Frontier doesn't give a flying about Vive users apparently... no other explanation for how this could slip past an entire Beta patch period

I'm not sure if it's made worse by my colour scheme (mostly blues with white accents, it's way easier on the eyes than reds and easier to read too) but otherwise I don't see how this can be fixed.

It's pretty horrendous because it affects the inside perimeters of both eyes so there's this nasty rainbow sitting in the middle of your vision, but even at the left and right extremities it would be bloody annoying.

I submitted a ticket anyway but I guess I can forget about playing ED this week, sucks because I have a bloody week off work!

Edit: Ok guys it appears that the flickering lights at the periphery problem is caused by the latest NVidia drivers, execute a rollback to the previous version and the problem should disappear.

I feel slightly bad now for bashing Frontier but ---- it, the game is still in a poor state on Vive so they deserve the abuse (ok not really but still)

So this is interesting. I have been telling people that my Vive experience during the beta was not bad at all. Not perfect, but clearly not nearly as bad as people were saying. I've read that some people found that starting Elite from the standalone launcher without first starting SteamVR gave them much better results. This is how I regularly started Elite so I just figured it was an issue with Steam. Now after the full release of 2.1 I see what everyone was talking about. I'm still starting Elite without Steam or SteamVR but now suddenly I have way worse aliasing and jittery lines. It's pretty bad.
Side note - performance is good.

In case it matters:
Stock Intel i7 6700k
Stock AMD R9 390X with up-to-date drivers
I always start Elite from standalone launcher (not steam) and I never start SteamVR first.

I just tried 2.1 today.. Yea it looks just as terrible on the vive as it did nearly 2 months ago on vive's release on april 5th.

The text is rediculusly blurry still and horrendous. I wont play it like this.

On a side note Project Cars just got official VIVE support a couplle weeks ago..and ....wow its totally readable and playable...and project cars has a lot of white text on black background thats even smaller the elites... there is something seriously wrong with elite in vr for the vive.

I played a bit with the settings (starting at VR-High) and for me *NO* AA made the text more readable (at 1x SS). Qualitywise it's about DK2 quality at the moment for me. As opposed to the DK2 though the scale of things is (still) completely off. (And yeah .. I modified the IPD all the way through without an improvement)

Maybe SLI is not supported. I play with GTX 980 TI AMP with this settings https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=254450. Perfect FPS....

I know the game doesn't support VR SLI I said so in my post "one disabled until VR SLI becomes a thing" .

It is just disappointing that I can go from 4k maximum details on 2 cards, to a pixelated mess because something is bugged with rendering to the vive and I don't have the horse power to push SS unless they were to somehow able to get VR SLI to function.

They get the resolution/focus/AA whatever you want to call it, fixed, I won't care about having to dumb down the graphics due to no sli support.

Hi,

I have just tested 1.6 on an i7 5820K with Titan X and HTC VIVE.

A number of rendering issues have been address and the following configuration offered a significant improvement in reducing aliasing of lines/edges and some improvement in text clarity, over the previous version of the game:

* VR High
* Supersampling x2.0

With these particular settings, the previous version of the game would drop frame rate so low that it was unplayable (it caused me nausea). In this version, it rarely drops below 90 fps (e.g. at the entrance of a space station).

Now, using x2.0 supersampling for anti-aliasing is a waste of GPU resources in my opinion. There has to be a better technique for optimizing the game's rendering engine, to eliminate aliasing of edges without blurring the rest of the image.

Also, even on a 4K monitor with anti-aliasing switched on, in main menu you'll notice that there's bad aliasing at the edges of the space station! I think that means there is a more general aliasing issue with the game's rendering engine, which is significantly amplified on the VIVE due to the lower (per degree of FOV) resolution.

To sum up, I found version 1.6 to have improved, but I think there's still a lot more work to be done:

* To further improve text clarity, e.g. bring it closer to the user
* To tackle the aliasing of edges and lines caused by the rendering engine. Potentially, this may require finding a more appropriate rendering technique.

Kind regards.

I really hope FD fixes these Vive bugs soon. I simply cannot imagine there are fundamental problems or that it would even take a lot of time to fix. It must just be some values being off or something. After all the game does support anti-aliasing and mip mapping lol.

overheating 980ti

I was enjoying this game in vr high settings on my i5 4590/980ti/16 gb htc vive. All text was perfectly readable and flying/fighting/landing was all lovely and smooth. I mean it was incredible, nothing I have ever experienced was so immersive and engaging, I really was a space commander. Then after 10-15 minutes movement would become jumpy and screen would grey out, a total immersion breaker. After 2 days of adjusting every possible setting it finally dawned on me that this super demanding dual screen game was pushing my graphics card beyond its comfort zone. I loaded up msi and turned the fan setting up to max, restarted elite and 2 hours later removed my space helmet (vr headset). No more jumpy immersion breaking jerkiness, this is the most wonderful game ever created. Computer sounds like a jet taking off but I play with headphones anyway. Might try turning fan down in increments tomorrow after doing a few more slave runs out of obsidian orbital. Might help someone out there.

You should leave the fan in auto mode. It will regulate speed as needed, so your card won't overheat (unless you have no ventilation at all inside the case) and won't make any more noise than needed.
If the card was overheating with the fan in auto mode, you should check the temperature inside your case because that may be the source of the problem.

Thanks vizvayu, I'm not sure how to check temperature inside the case, what you said makes sense. All I know is that the game is now running better than before.
