HTC Vive resolution and  focus

Always good to know Frontier is continuing work on the HTC Vive fix.

As for the parameter change posted here, I have made the changes and will try it out tomorrow. It's good to know there's a dramatic improvement. I will make sure I lower Supersampling back down to 1.0, though. My current GTX 970 may tank otherwise! :p

I'd go as far as to suggest that with the larger render target, setting Elite's internal SS to undersample (less than 1.0), is still an improvement.

Getting good results here. Everything is noticeably sharper except red text.

I've set Elite's SS to x0.65 which seems to improve frame rate a lot. Wish it could be disabled entirely.

renderTargetMultiplier set between 2 and 2.2, with some mild stuttering in stations. When set to 2.5 getting a lot of reprojection.

AA has been disabled. Found that SMAA and MSAA made the textures and text fuzzy.

Running an AMD R9 290.

The most important point is this gives me hope that Elite will get better, that the grainy mess is not the end.

Setting SS to 1 is disabling it entirely. Super Sampling just means the internal resolustion is x times higher or lower then the resolution of your display. If you set it to 0.65, Elite renders (2160 x 0.65) x (1200 x 0.65) pixels in the vive and thats why its improving your frame rate. You are setting your resolution lower. With the renderTargetMultiplier you calculate it higher again. Setting it to 2 means you render ((2160 x 2) x 0.65) x ((1200 x 2) x 0.65) pixels, you have 2808 x 1560 now . I really dont think you have better performance then setting the SS to 1 and the TargetMultiplier to 1.3. You have the same resolution afterwards but with less calculations.

I was also trying out the renderTargetMultiplier. I first edited the file and then started SteamVR & elite through stand-alone. I set the renderTargetMultiplier to 2.0. I got a picture quality that was way over my expectations, I would say it is perfect except from aliasing artifacts in high contrast places like the stations. The quality was in pair with other vive games. I can read all text with no issues or need to lean forward. The framerate was good (90fps in and outside stations, I have not tried planetary stuff). I have an ASUS Strix 980ti and 3770. I was then trying get back to the old blocky minecraft mode by deleting renderTargetMultiplier from the config file with no result. I also tried to run with SS 1.5 (witch did big improvements before "renderTargetMultiplier mode") with no effect. I did not try to reboot my PC but I rebooted my vive when changing the file. I will continue to try out things today... how can this issue be solved in a Russian forum for another game. Anyway this is the "patch" I have been waiting for and now I will start playing elite again :)

+1 - This has worked a treat for me and made Elite playable again, so my Vive can finally be used in ED too. MASSIVE THANK YOU TO THE COMMUNITY for the info. THANK YOU.

I can't see this file on my machine.

However I don't have Elite installed under Steam.

This worked really well for me.Picture is much sharper and not losing any frames.Still silky smooth.Virtual desktop is so much clearer and movies look amazing compared to when i first setup my Vive.targetMultiplier 2.5 ,in game SS 1.0 and everything else set to high or ultra intel 5930 gtx 980 ti 12 GB ram
I'm blown away by how well this works for me.My Vive has a picture now that appears just as clear as my Cv1.Happy days!!

Thought I'd add to the positives around the renderTargetMultiplier fix.

I'd tried supersampling in the ED menu after getting a GTX 1070 last week and found that 1.5 improved the quality, and 2.0 improved it but framerate took a hit in stations. So I'd played on SS x1.5 and VR High.

Still using VR High, and setting the ED SS to x1 and using renderTargetMultiplier=2 seems to be better than the in-game SS, however I did get some laggy behaviour in stations, biggest problem was text in Starport Services. I changed the multiplier to 1.75 and that is nice and smooth in stations and out in the black. I suspect that I could get acceptable gameplay with the multiplier=2 by tweaking some of the quality settings.

Bottom line is that I have a method that makes text and stations look acceptable. It's very much a brute force approach and hopefully the solution FDev are working on will be more efficient.

No need to worry about where you have Elite installed; It is a SteamVR setting, without direct relation to Elite (It will affect all programs that run under SteamVR (except for those who themselves manipulate the render target size), including the SteamVR interface itself, which looks much sharper), and as such saved in the "config" directory of your steam installation, typically: "c:\program files\steam\config\steamvr.vrsettings".

Found it.

I've been running without activating SteamVR, and recently had to do a reinstall of everything. Firing up SteamVR once imitiises the file creation and then I could go in and edit. Just judging by the screen mirror, it already looks better, but will try it properly tonight, and see if I can OC my 1080 to 2100 MHz boost as well.

Wow, so that's what this game can look like...! Amazing... And there are no doubt many to thank in regards to getting to this point, but i'll list a couple with helpful links...

This is 'Chaperone Switcher' which now has a very handy SteamVR supersampling setting. A couple of clicks and you're done with no file editing at all - https://www.reddit.com/r/Vive/comments/4q4bu3/update_chaperone_switcher_on_the_fly/

And here is a thread outlining some ideal settings in EDprofiler for 980ti users - works a treat and looks most excellent... https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDange..._the_right_settings_render_target_multiplier/

njoi:)!

Coming in late to the VR game-- I heard the Vive and ED had serious issues, are they now completely resolved/resolvable or just "better than they were before"? I'm kinda opposed to the Occulus for...reasons...nowadays, but E:D is basically the sole reason I'd be picking up a VR headset in the first place, so getting reassurance that it wouldn't be a total waste of money would make me a happy camper indeed.

The issues are resolved by some impressive community work. The image quality is outstanding on the vive, at least with my setup (3770 and 980ti).

wow! The render target multiplier is a bit of a game changer, yes ED looks so much better but so does everything else. I have a gtx1080 and found the sweet spot for me is 1.5. Project cars looks fantastic, it's still has aliasing problems but it's now worth playing over 4K, the immersion is great, same goes for ED.

But all the other vive games look so much cleaner and sharper. I might be nieve but why was never a option within the steam VR settings? I know you need a lot of horse power to get it running but that can't be the only reason.

I'm very happy!!! [yesnod]
