I almost feel bad for Frontier

It's mostly fixable though...

Upkeep is too high
No UC
Some basic functions (Tritium as Cargo?) need clarification

It's actually all minor things to change.

They just have to go out of their way to change them...

I was going to post this. It's not that bad, Jesus. Just reduce/remove upkeep, increase Tritium availability and include UC and it's good to go.

Elite: Masochism. The tendency to derive gratification from one's own pain or humiliation. Grind or be punished. This games target group is getting smaller by the update.

Dont get one. Simple as that.

Carriers are not mandatory content and you are obviously not the target player for them

I read the Fleet Carrier spec, rules, costs, and limitations. Even watched the demo.
My first thought! why bother with something so awkward to use.
It’s a joke.
Ok if you're running an outfit with say a hundred real people dedicated to its success. !
It’s laughable, beyond funny.
Clever ! Too clever, Complicated, and beyond any one with a real life job.

Sorry, I will not even entertain one.

Come on Duck, you're not new here. The level of salt is about on par with that of every update...and how do you even figure Frontier have been "caught totally off-guard"? They've been at it for 5 years, they know how whingey the community gets every frigging time.

Personally I very much enjoy the irony of explorers complaining that Frontier are focusing on a small fraction of the playerbase.

This has been my view as well, but are you saying that everyone who IS a target player is happy with carriers in their current form?

I kinda am, but i'm part of the 20bn crew... forgot the percentage :D
as i said my only concern is tritium mining speed

Anyway, in a few weeks they will axe the prices and costs by a hundred, while buffing mining by a factor of ten again and everybody will rejoice and wallow in the trivializing of yet more features and content that could be great if only Frontier ignored the bloody complaints and powered through towards implementing The Vision rather than the disjointed mess designed and balanced by the youtube divas we currently have.

Is this the worst example (subjective) we have seen of out of touch development? I think it may be the worst I've seen. In their current state, I don't see any reason I personally would want to own a carrier, and to be honest, I don't see any reason to interact with them.

I'm sure that the management and developers at Frontier are enthusiastic about the new features they bring to their games (in this case, Elite Dangerous). And while they expect some negative feedback, I can't help but think that they have been caught totally off-guard with the level of disappointment, frustration, and disinterest in the latest Fleet Carrier beta. To put all that time, energy, and enthusiasm into a project to just watch it bomb - I know I would be disheartened if this were the response to a project I invested time in.

And yet, I can't fully bring myself to feel bad for Frontier. It seems they are just totally out-of-touch with their customers and player base. I'm not saying this based on what I want or do not want in the game, but rather the overwhelming negative feedback overflowing in the forums and livestreams, even from people who normally are much more generous with their praise of Frontier. I guess if I am going to feel bad for someone, it's the quiet developer working at Frontier who thinks, "This is not what the players want, but the boss tells me this is what I must do, so that's what I'll do." Having worked for such a boss in the past, I do feel bad for those employees at Frontier in this position. Something is obviously broken at Frontier, and I'm guessing it's management / leadership. And sadly, like the recent Charlie's Angels reboot and other terrible movies, they will probably just blame the fans and not own and learn from their mistakes. I hope I'm wrong (there's still time to fix these Fleet Carriers).
No, they specifically announced the details of fc just 2 months before their release, when nothing can be fundamentally fixed.
If they had announced it in August or even December 2019, the community and the developers would have had more time, maybe even enough time to bring this useless piece of scrap metal to some kind of playful state.
But no, then, I remember very well, they said "we won't tell you anything now, we'll tell you how we can", and many people here on the forum repeated to them that this is a great idea.
In fact, the responsibility for this situation lies not only with fdev but also with all those who supported their decisions all the time. It's not the least of their fault.

Yeah, I can't honestly think of a more profound example of a game dev studio so completely out of touch with their own game. Not in my 35+ years of gaming.

I mean FDev have shown this out of touch development behavior before, but not to THIS degree. This is a whole new level of out of touch for them.

It truly makes me concerned about the New Era later this year.

Amen

You need critics, not sycophants, to receive feedback that is useful to improve quality (if you want to improve quality, as business is doing well anycase, EA style)
