I exploded... with ninety pages of unsold Exploration data onboard

Hmm, was initially supportive, thinking OP was just posting for a bit of support after messing up - as an experienced player they must know they messed up. But ... wanting the data back when they had been in dock and specifically chosen not to sell ... 🤦‍♀️ This whole I'm gonna go cry to support meme is going too far - fair enough for n00bs who get caught out on first time doing something maybe, but experienced players ... sheesh

Yeah, strange human beings we are, aren't we ;)
I initially thought, what an idiot, his own fault.
But after the real idiots showed up my pov changed ;)
Luckily the decision isn't in their hands nor in mine, so I'm moving on now :)

when they had been in dock and specifically chosen not to sell ... 🤦‍♀️

why would that make a difference in this case? this is not a noob. it was just carelessness, he himself is pretty clear about that.

now, my viewpoint wouldn't change even for noobs, they have to learn like everybody else, but i'm just curious why you give such importance to such an inconsequential (imo) detail.

Because he's asking to be first person to discover and hand in those systems - which under game rules usually means without dying. But he died. And AFAIK it wasn't to a game bug, it was to AFKing. Give him the CR if you must, but not the discoveries: he messed up - he should own that decision.

you didn't really answer my question. would that be different if he had not docked and chosen not to sell data?

No - I answered - you're just doing that logic chopping things some on here like - have fun!

okay, i'll move on then and just assume you're not yet fluent enough in english, and don't mean to write what you actually write, like this snippet:

But ... wanting the data back when they had been in dock and specifically chosen not to sell ... 🤦‍♀️

which is stressed by your own italics, and which has nothing to do whatsoever with your answer around "without dying" or any "bug", and seems to have mysteriously disappeared from your argument. 😂

Hi all, thanks for all the comments, both positive and negative - I can see both points of view here, and would have been accepting of the judge's decision either way.

I am happy (from my point of view) to report that FD have decided to be gracious and have restored most of my exploration data "as a one-off gesture of goodwill". I am grateful, and suitably chastised. I hope to learn from this mistake.

For those who have said, "Why didn't you just log off?" my answer is this: up until about a year ago, I was playing ED on a real old, slow PC. It literally took ten minutes to load the game, so I learned to avoid logging off unless I "really needed to". I now have a much better PC, the game loads nearly instantly, but I never "reprogrammed myself" in terms of logging off. I shall now endeavour to do so. I leave it up to the forum to decide whether this is a valid reason, or just an excuse.

Yeah, old habits die hard.

i'm happy for you, cmdr.

i still disagree with any form of reimbursement in this case and think frontier did themselves a poor favor in this. on the good side, it couldn't get worse, their reputation regarding the policing of the game is already long busted, and hasn't been taken seriously for a while now, so it doesn't really matter. all the better for you. and you really don't need any excuses, it's your game, you play as you see fit.

The OP needs to build a cooler running ship. I fell asleep last night while travelling and woke up to a close-up view of a fiery ball! Obviously done an emergency SC drop - all the modules were dinged a bit, but the ship temp was a stable 50%. I'd already tested this before leaving, just in case.

Had this problem the OP described during DW2. I was AFK some hours and came back to see 'ship destroyed'.

Nice to see other CMDRs have the same problems ;) o7 o/ o>

EDIT

Of course I'm sorry about your loss of data, OP

I’v Been out for 20 months and if I need to afk for more than two minutes it’s log to main menu no matter where I am.
Glad you got it sorted.

Logging off works wonders! I'm probably in the crowd that feel the pang of loss of that much data, but also think you shouldn't have gotten it back because of 1) unwillingness to sell and 2) not logging off when going away for that long. Either way, glad you got it sorted!

:D S

I remember back in the day I lost some 60K Ly's (and 2 years) worth of exploration data to the 'stuck in a jet cone' bug. Thought about filing a ticket but after couple of days just said "eff it, I don't care." I was eager to get back anyways, as Horizons had come out while I was out there and I wanted to get myself some SRVs. Not the return I had planned but it is what it is.

I still have some of my ELW bookmarks from that trip. A grim reminder to the perils of exploration as they open to an empty System Map 😅 Also, if I ever wander back there it'll be interesting to see if anyone's tagged them yet.
