I have been surprised.

This. Its a bit like being surprised it takes 10000 cents to get a $100 note, but that just isnt the point of cents. :)

Right, so the point of the materials trader is basically just to dump off unused junk to try and get some use from it, not as an effective way to get materials and trade up for something else that you're after. If you want something, go out and get the materials for it and don't bother with the trader, if you can help it.

Kind of seems like a waste to me, but it is what it is.

I don't know, but initial thoughts, it seems like it could use some balancing.

No, its purpose is to trade stuff. I trade stuff all the time. But I dont try to trade my used toilet paper for a vintage synthesizer, because that is just dumb. I've tried the trader today, and it works brilliantly. Here is what you do:

1) Look at each row, and identify how easy each element is to get.
2) Get the 'best' element, as in ease*value.
3) Use the trader to trade up/down in addition to the casual collection of the rest.

It works great. But no, scavenging the cheapest crap and trying to trade it for the most rare item is not working very well. That is because it is a stupid thing to do. So dont. :p

In honour of frontier’s new engineering paradigm, I shall continue in a slightly more appropriately named commander account.

Oh, I’m not angry. I’m not even upset. I’m actually just a little disappointed.

There is so much that is good and beautifully done in 3.0. But the engineering and materials trading is so incredibly out of touch, after so much discussion and feedback, I am just really sad it’s such a shocking misreading of the otherwise constructive conversations with the developer.

It does seem like a bit of a missed opportunity, but better than what we have in the game currently overall, in my opinion.

Looking back at yesterdays first experience with the beta, I now think it's not that bad. But...

... the system is not really simplified. We still need to click through an amount of littel steps to get to the final grade we want.
... there still seems to be a good deal of RNG in how many trys we need to complete a grade ... so basically the material cost is RNG now?
... the Material Trader is a good helper, BUT: why oh why are the MAT-Traders split in three branches and scattered around the bubble????

* They new system could be ok, if the this G1-G5 step by step RNG progression was further simplified. Say fixed 3 tiny upgrade steps for each grade?
* The three MAT Trader types should all be present at each Engineer!

OR

* let's turn regretfully and plea to get the old system back.

So why isn't this feedback in the beta forum? Or is it just a moan?

It’s a public discussion. So maybe try discussing the topic; I’m sure the moderators would move the thread if they see fit, but this is as much general observation as anything. Also I am remaining quite civil. Consider reciprocating.

Careful now! Kofeyh's ego has trouble coping with criticism; you'll be on mute before you can say 'narcissistic tantrum'! [big grin]

Perhaps discuss the topic, rather than personal insults, sarcasm and some sort of weird colour obsession. Thanks.

Why not just get g5 and not bother with the trader at all, since it doesn't seem worth the hassle? Shame I'm not a huge fan of going out of my way to mess around with the Engineers. I generally have other things I'd rather be doing. YMMV

this, I think the converter is just to additionally transform some random lower excess crap you find and not the main source of how you should get material.

It works both ways - just spend a bit of time gathering high end materials and you can easily have more lower end mats then you know what to do with.

Guess you haven't seen the changes to prospecting. G5 elements are going to get rarer, if that's even possible, according to another poster (I haven't verified it yet myself to be fair).

Don't see the problem.
Instead of farming the grade you need, you can now collect all the other grades as well and convert them to what you actually do need.
It's a bonus.
You actually need many of the other mats as well now. Managing materials has become more important than ever...and more time consuming.

I just clicked the thread and replied. Can't be bothered to read OP posts that have clickbait titles. In fact, I think there should be some forum etiquette against them TBH.
