I must say, I'm pretty disappointed with the name plates they shower off so far,

And they want to charge you for this. Bare minimum effort, maximum profit.

FDEV have never done that before, have they?

/Glances across at vibrant paint packs....

If the proceeds go toward hiring more designers, I'm all for it.

If it goes toward padding their shareholder report, not so much.

It will mostly go towards funding that rollercoaster game since more staff are working on that game than this.

Mediocre, low-effort cosmetics without even a free option available to make the feature available to all paying customers. I've seen better free cosmetic options in free-to-play games. Better business practices, too.

I'm not angry, Frontier. Just disappointed. I figured you were better than this.

Lol
This forum some times...

"Wouldn't it be cool to name ships?"
"I'd like to name my ships"
"I MUST name my ships!"
"OMG FD, why the hell can't I name my ships?"
"REALLY? I DEMAND SHIP NAMING!!"

*Gets ship naming feature*

"It's not good enough"

Every time they give us any thing the community desires.... the tears and complaints flow more than the request for said code. Let's not even get started on the everything should be free posts. Unbelievable how so many are brats and entitled, have to thank all those single moms and dads.

I quite like this teaser of some of the designs. They're exactly what I expected - I expected the ship name to be painted on the ship with some embellishments. This is exactly what we have here. Guaranteed these won't be the only designs - they're not designs that take "no effort", no those are the block colour paintjobs - these nameplate designs have illustrations and illuminations around the text, which is quite a bit more work than a colour swap. Someone had to draw these decals in illustrator or something; sure some of them are simpler than others, for instance that skull one looks quite complex in fact.

The Ravager nameplate from the Unknown Trailer is another one that we weren't shown on stream, and it too looks well designed - a skull in an astronaut helmet with crossbones.

You may have been expecting really complex aeroplane nose art style stuff, but there is room for that to come. These nameplates are perfectly passable as a cheap cosmetic. If they cost a pound and can be used, like decals, on multiple ships, I'll have no problem buying one or two. I have some Frontier Points on Xbox still to use, so those funds are allocated anyway.

its kinda bad that the nameplate is covered by the spiky bodykit in that trailer

I'd be much happier if the nameplates were paid (even a little expensive) but then once bought variants would be available as mission rewards in-game for no additional fee. Rather than only being available through the store.

I've zero problem with micro-transactions; but it's a pity that really cool stuff that would make for interesting rank/rep/mission rewards is only available outside the game. So we just end up playing to add yet another million to our huge bank accounts.

Yeah I wouldn't pay for this.....this should all be free and included in basic game. I would however pay for some nice decals a la war thunder...and for goodness sake allow some customization like in WT.

It was mentioned earlier but if the little designs below the lettering aren't mirrored depending on side, I wont even consider buying one.

War Thunder: A free to play game that has to provide dedicated servers for upwards of 70k players at peak times, can afford to also provide detailed decals, inscriptions and skins (that you can even relocate and resize however you like!) for FREE while somehow still managing to "keep their lights on"!

They must be wizards.

Does the Millenium Falcon have it's name on the hull?

Ship names need to be approved & that will take some poor soul time at FDev & will need to be funded.

Since I don't have the Beta, I assume that the big thing for me would be is that I can see the ship names from my UI or the shipyard for transfers ,etc. Knowing what Python I'm looking at or what Asp I want transferred by name is whats really important for me. I don't care about the externals, don't know whose actually going to spend enough time sitting there trying to read other players names on their ship anyways. Even in Star Wars, I am pretty sure the Millennium Falcon didn't have it's name on the side of the ship...

Currently you can only see other players ship name if you look at left hand UI, contact tab and select their ship. Can't remember when i did that last time...

You saw a name on a NPC ship. You have to pay for a nameplate for it to be visible in even a scan.

I still can understand these posts... if that game is so great why are you here wasting your entertainment funds and time???

While this may be true, Gaijin are a shady company.

While they are indeed shady it doesn't mean they are not doing some things right.

Perhaps he wishes to play a space game and hopes ED will live up to it's potential rather than wimp out and WT is a good example of decals done right?

Oh get lost. Many of us spend a crapton of money in the store already.

Btw, taking shots at single parents? You suck dude.

I don't understand the point of charging for basic shipname visibility. I'm sorry to say, that while it is apparently common knowledge that Frontier's coffers are fairly healthy, the absolute lack of ship naming without paying seems to me to be a desperate move for more cash.

I agree completely that 'premium' looking nameplates should be purchasable. After all, this isn't a subscription game, and therefore I have no problem with optional cosmetics for sale. But to have something that really should be a fundamental part of the game as a new, chargeable item? No, that's just greed, and the really sad thing is, Frontier's management team KNOW that people will buy them regardless, especially console players who are used to buying stuff ingame.

As for the people who somehow see those criticising this as being 'entitled brats' (which AFAIK is supposed to be against forum rules), noone is asking for anything unreasonable to be made freely available. This is simply about allowing players to choose a ship name and have it at least identified as such by other players during a scan. If that sounds like unreasonable entitlement, then you are a Frontier suckup, and your opinion is immediately invalid.

While they are indeed shady it doesn't mean they are not doing some things right.

I'm not saying they don't do some things right, clearly War Thunder wouldn't be as popular as it is if they didnt. Just pointing out not to put them on a pedestal or anything.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of nameplates as they are looking up to be (although a bit is still speculation as far as I know), such as no basic free option and especially the fact that if there is no free option, no one but you will be able to see your ships name, even on the hud. Then theres also the question about the price and if they will be treated like paint jobs or decals.

Well they've certainly gone to some effort. Surely totally underwhelming for a reveal would just the shipname, and the reaction expected for that would be? ('is that it!?')

I like a clean nameplate myself but I like the pirate version, the star is pretty good too imo. The coriolis might have a place to BGS players but 60/40 for me. I'm not sure what the other one is.
Well they gave it the minimum of effort. Should I throw a parade they did even that much? Honestly, I've seen photoshop mock ups of ship nameplate liveries that looked better than this. This seems like the basic free version and it feels cynical that FD expect to charge for this. If you'd pay money for this then that's fine but I won't.

Consider that they had since the kickstarter to come up with ideas and create versions ranging from a basic free one like the ones they've shown to a plethora of more exotic ones for the store like maybe this:
