As for not being willing to return to a non VR playstate, well aboard commander. Your not alone on that one.
As for the GM in VR, it's not broke but you will need to adjust to the 3d nature of it now. There is a thread posted about every week with people offering ways to adjust. When you do it works fine.
Thanks Dogbite. I did see that. I just thought it was strange. Going through the trouble to implement something. And then forgetting to finish it before shipping it out. The movement wasn't really the issue any how. I thought the movement using the touch was perfect as is. It was the inability to move through the menu due to buttons being double bound or whatever. Either way. I'm moving on.
Ok, Im assuming the op bought the rift. If you want to buy one, then I recommend you wait a bit. Like I said, many changes coming, cheaper and improved solutions from different companies. There’s the pimax 8k, 4k, 5k, 2k... seems very interesting, albeit it looks like you are hanging a plasma tv in your forehead. I have no idea how people plan to power the 8k, since pimax said not even 3x 1080 ti may be enough! Still, nvidia volta is approaching. From Oculus there will be a $200 wifi and external tracker free version soon! Also a more advanced at some point next year. Also, current tech will get even cheaper in a few weeks or months. I bought mine for almost 3x what it costs today. Sure its a heck of an experience, and it took a year for the price to start dropping, so worth it for me. But today I would wait. Better hardware is coming.
If you didnt think VR is still there after testing with ED and others, I don’t know what to say. Recommend you give it another go and use the correct apps and settings. I don’t know a single person that wasn’t impressed. Of course this is subjective, but perhaps you need a better demo.
This is spot on. I actually bought the Oculus without ever trying it. Not a smart decision. But damnit I'd been drooling over it for three years. Without a PC (good enough) to play it on. Finally got to upgrade. So far, I have found nothing but joy in what it has to offer at this point. And nothing has irritated me so much as seeing articles about VR being a failure and "this isn't what I hoped it would be" and bla bla bla. Man this generation is a bunch of whiners. Its VR! Are you NOT Entertained?!?! The hell of it is, with VR, you could experience a scene or game as a gladiator, screaming just that phrase to a pixelated crowd, after eviscerating a giant. Honestly, i had lower expectations, and am quite pleased with VR at the moment. And it will grow.
I had occasion to try a Rift out for a few hours a couple of weekends back, with Elite and the default apps it comes with.
I was pretty impressed, but also slightly disappointed at the same time. It was brilliant, but just not quite as brilliant as I'd been expecting.
Coupled with the fact I'd need to spend at least 1200 quid for a graphics upgrade and the VR headset (I'd probably get the Vive), I find myself still playing the waiting game.
I'd been hoping that I'd be "oh yes, now's the time", but it wasn't, quite.
So hoping that there'll be a Vive 2 sooner rather than later, but I'm hearing rumours that AR rather than VR is now becoming the rage.
I also commiserate with you, TopCat. As I mentioned above. I waited 3 years. I felt like it was too early. I believed in it enough to be excited. But also held that excitement at bay until there was an opportunity to go full throttle. New Self built PC, VR, bank account isn't entirely demolished. If things hadn't come together like they did. I'd be sitting in your chair right now. (though the butt print might look a little different) I have to say however. There is a VRacade near where I live. If I had went to that arcade and spent the 25$ an hour it costs to play there. I'd have paid for the beast at least three times over in hours. The Rift is beautiful. I wouldn't slight the Vive either. And all these new headsets coming out.. Mm Mm Mm. This is the time brother.
As for AR. Thats just a Microsoft wet dream. lol. It will come to pass however
It works, and the logitech 3d is an accurate stick and wireless too. But it doesn’t have enough buttons and knobs for me, even with VA. VA is great, I use it for everything, minus prepare my coffee (alexa does that). But it is not reliable nor fast enough for some critical stuff like balancing power or when you are in the heat of battle. Mechanical keys and a hotas are a must for me.
I don’t miss the twist action at all, in fact thats the first thing I disabled in my saitek previously. However I am more used to yaw with feet since its part of my job and I have been using a dedicated rudder for a lomg time. I use a “cheap” saitek pro rudder. Not the best, but does the job. The Warthog is the best feel, like I said, but the TWCS does the job more competently if you are not investing in rudders, and only looking for a tabletop joystick. I use it in my laptop when I travel. It looks awesome, with matching orange ui colors.
If you got the cash, go all in for Warthog ($340)+Rudder ($180-300)+Fulk cockpit mount ($150). If you can get it stages even. If it is too much, get the TWCS + T16000 for $130. I like the Saitek too, but have had quality issues (more than the others), and the lcd screen in some models is useless in vr. Plus the Thrustmasters feel more accurate and better for me.
The VR hmd I used in 1993ish was called V-io glasses. It was 3D, used comm1 serial and the big printer one (lttp or something) for tracking. It had also a box to connect to analogic video. It was oled screen, high resolution (for the time) too and had built in speakers. Many similarities with the rift. There wasn’t anything useful to do and it costed a fortune (I was rich back then lol).
Man oh man. I was there. I mean... Never been rich. Well I feel rich now, but really it only means out of debt. Which is why I'm here now. lol.
I don't have your background though. Rudders are foreign to me. Heh. The stick twist felt like a must. But that reaches all the way back to the first mech warrior games. When it meant life and death. I looked and looked, and the more I looked. The more the warthog called to me. But that price. Ouch. I ended up buying the T16000M with throttle last night. I like that you put cheap in quotations. A cheap Saitek rudder set was what I was looking at. I'm holding off though. With Voice attack, and the T16000M, I think things will go smoothly enough.
True. I've been playing thus far with an old, beat up Saitek Cyborg 3D Gold stick. Gotta be at least ten years old. And I agree that Voice Attack is a must, with or without an add-on voice pack. But I am loving my new Hotas (certainly not a Warthog.... waaaaaay out of my price range!).... It's a good fit for VR, IMHO...
Athracht, I tried to play first with an old wingman extreme with the USB adapter and everything. There was no way to map the hat or a couple buttons, even with the drivers and software. lol. I think the beast is dead now. I burned it with fire.
Guys! Thanks for all the info and suggestions! Keep flying true, Commanders! Ill be joining you on the 14th when my HOTAS comes in. Till then. Peace. And may all your deliveries be safe and swift.

And keep those chromosomes, space radiation free!
