I’d like more commanders in the Open

Remember an interaction in an online game is two-way and there is a real human being at both ends of that interaction. Poor comparison re the movie example. Re the military example - same as using the 911 operator - if the interaction I have with someone ingame is the only interaction I have on which to base a judgement, then I will judge them based on that interaction, be it good or bad. Too many people hide behind the roleplay excuse...
Your judgement is only relevant to you

You mean when someone, as fdev descricbes it exploits the game mechanics? Yes I would call using an exploit a bad move.
Where does fdev describe it as an exploit? Last time I was here (admittedly nearly two years ago) it was fdev's position that people should be able to log out of the game if they want, even if they're in combat. Hence them having a 15 second timer and not a ban.

It is, but the purpose of the timer is clearly not to facilitate escape or avoidance of consequence; it's precisely the opposite. People have to be able to exit the game at will, but Frontier wants there to be time for any situation to play out. The timer is a compromise made necessary by the P2P nature of the game.

If you do the fifteen second timer then yes, fdev considers that fine but if you do not then it’s considered an exploit.

The key though is that the entire purpose is that they do not want people trying to circumvent game mechanics such as rebuys, losing cargo, etc.

So... I was right? Logging out in combat isn't an exploit?

Do you think it makes people a jerk or bad in some way if they log out to avoid combat?

If I would use JosiahD logic yes it makes people jerks to log out via the timer. As it's the only interaction I have with that person I will judge them by that cowardly move even if what they did is oked by FDev.

Personally I don't care what people do so long their actions are within the rules set by FDev. Logging out via the timer, shooting at me unprovoked, or any other allowed action, all good to me.
It's a game after all and if somebody wants to play an outlaw, pirate, sociopath and it's allowed why not. I don't judge people in a open galaxy PvP game on which path they want to take, everybody is free to follow theirs. It would be boring if we all just kumbaya together and pet ourselves on the shoulder for killing the evil npcs. Open is PvP and not PvE after all.
And the whole there is another person on the other side thing. Everybody should know what to expect then they click open mode. If adverse CMDR play is allowed they shouldn't be surprised and/or make conclusions about the legal actions of other CMDRs. FDev provided 2 other modes, so everybody should be able to find the sandbox which fits their play style the best.

I think FDev should make the snowflake bubble head free.

Logging out to the main menu isn't an exploit, but if you're happy to have your ship float helplessly whilst it's pounded by something like my 900 DPS FdL for 15 seconds at point blank when you could use that time to high wake out while using heatsinks, chaff and attempting to keep away from the front end of that ship, you're still going to see plenty of rebuy screens.

I don't judge anyone by their actions in a game and I don't care what they do, as long as it's within the rules of the game.

For the record, I don't agree with combat logging either. And per my earlier position, if that was the only interaction I had on which to base a judgement, I'd judge them accordingly. No issues from me there. My point stands - don't act like a jerk if you don't want to be judged as one.

You get the players you market to.
