I’d like more commanders in the Open

Logic is pretty clear in my view. I don't want to deal with trolls so I play in solo. Seems pretty cut and dry.
Well that does, yeah. Seems a shame though to damn the galaxy because of a couple of risky systems. I play in Open for the most part because I prefer to work with people than against them.

A friend of mine called me over the phone yesterday, requested aid in safe passage at Deciat. I hopped into a ship and distracted three pirate role-players for a few minutes, so that he could successfully get over to Farseer and take his dirty drives to grade three. They killed him on 3 previous passage attempts. My friend just bought the game, is amazed, and wants to play open-only for his own immersion reasons. I welcome such dedication, so agreed to help immediately. That got me thinking: if pirates have their way in claiming the system for themselves while having uninterrupted hand-trembling adrenalin fun, why can’t new combat players have Their way sometimes in getting windows for safe passage to engineers to get footing in the game, join squadrons, build ships and perhaps even confront their adversaries at some future point in time?

I’ve been to hotspots in the past and it’s noteworthy how many new players get pulled just to be instakilled by a wing of 3-4. Obviously, it’s a lot of fun for seasoned vets to blow up “sidewinders” all day, but I ain’t here to preach nor judge, at the end of the day, do what you want. It’s the FDev ultimately responsible for framework and solutions, in my mind. Just stopped by to point a finger at a little disbalance and maybe get the message across, discuss solutions with the community of ED, both pirate and lawful. Would it be fair if AI supercops (super ATR) patrolled engineer systems couple of hours a day while having 10 second response time? I mean really badass ones, shooting FSD disruptor enzyme phasing rails and “ganking” all wanted commanders during “safe passage hours”., haha

Just a thought. Would like to hear your opinion too.

Agree with your comment on a super ATR. I commend your friend’s dedication to Open. The problem is that at present being Wanted does not trigger a strong enough response from the task forces. If a player is attacked and destroyed in a non-anarchy system, then the local security ships need to be able to chase them out of the system and even across systems if need be. Having a Wanted status should be a stressful situation for a commander, reflecting the tension any criminal would feel if they are being pursued by the law.

That should please immersion seekers and PvP pirates who want to “live on the edge”

Nope. We want players coming after us.

So do the murder hobo NPCs and pirate NPCs make you combat log?
Nope. I just blow them up. The difference is is if I get interdicted by an NPC it's usually for a reason. Cargo in my hold or I have a bounty on me. Something like that. That way I know when to expect it.

Meanwhile in open I can be interdicted at any time for any reason. More often than not that reason is just for the lulz. I have no interest in dealing with that. I'm just trying to enjoy the game.

Seems like enjoying the game for you is predicated on your ability to not feel you’re ever at risk of a rebuy

No my enjoyment of the game is predicated on me being able to do what I want to do when I want to do it without having to deal with trolls in the process. I have no issues engaging in combat when that's what I want to do. But if I am running modules across the bubble to an engineer I don't need any extra interruptions to slow me down. Same goes for when I am doing trade runs.

And especially when I am doing mining runs. Why the hell would I want to risk losing two or three hours worth of progress just because some kid has decided that he wants to be a murder hobo for the night? That is the exact opposite of fun to me.

that’s unfortunate. That problem solving of unexpected challenges is what makes the game fun to me

I'm sitting here and trying to think of a reason to play in Open, and I can't come up with one. If I were looking for villains for a story, maybe? But the one I'm writing currently has alien villains; the humans all work with each other. None of them fight each other (at least directly).

At present, any non-alien combat's just a waste of time and resources. I got things to do. As far as creating content goes, I'm doing my part with an FC later. Those can be seen across game modes, so I don't need to be in Open potentially dealing with individuals whose preferred gameplay may not really work with what I, personally, have going on for me and my gameplay.

Open is a land of people who want to fight each other. I'm fine with letting them get on with that while my friends and I do our own thing. Hopefully, people are just as fine vice versa.

I agree. One of my favorite things about the game is being able to customize the ships to fit what I need it to do. The wide selection of engineering choices is especially fun to play around with. I consider that to be its own form of problem solving and I enjoy it quite a lot.

I just don't see dealing with trolls as a problem solving issue because while they are a problem there is no real solution other than just killing them or avoiding them. And neither is particularly fun for me. Especially while I am I'm the middle of something.

How do you define troll in the context of Open Play in Elite: Dangerous?

This is basically how I feel too. I have nothing against people who enjoy Open. If people find their fun in dealing with other people then that is fine with me. I am happy that they have found something that holds their attention.

The only time I have anything against open players is when they start talking about putting everyone into open and getting rid of the option to play solo. That's when I start to have an issue with them. because at that point they are trying to take away my enjoyment of the game in order to fuel their enjoyment of the game and that's never okay.

I think they're just venting at that point -- there's no way we'd ever go to just one game mode and I think everyone knows that by now. I get that they're upset that it's not quite as vibrant a galaxy as it is in some of the massive private groups I'm in, but they have to understand that it's a situation of their own making. Sometimes, that's hard for some people to accept. It's even harder to rectify on their own.
