I’d like more commanders in the Open

The entire game should be open only. I know that’s unpopular for some people. But it’s my opinion. Why? Because of what op described. He was contacted for help to solve a problem, because of in game actual risk and danger for his buddy. Those interactions are what makes these games fun.

inb4 the “We WeRe PrOmIsEd SiNgLePlAyEr” carebears. I know I know. Like I said, it’s my opinion.
Good news!

With this new blocking feature, you can bet your sweet cheeks that the community will develop definitive and well-maintained spreadsheets of all the names of gankers for players to simply copy and paste into their in-game blocking tools. ED players are the patient type, so they'll have no problem spending the time to make definitive lists. Players will have no issue copying and pasting dozens upon dozens of CMDR names in to block. And yes, they will do each and every name one by one and will check that list weekly. Hell, someone will probably even develop an app that will give desktop alerts to let people know there are new names to add.

Then guess what? They will probably all come back to Open. Or at least play in Open fairly regularly. You'll have your wish.

I think they're just venting at that point -- there's no way we'd ever go to just one game mode and I think everyone knows that by now. I get that they're upset that it's not quite as vibrant a galaxy as it is in some of the massive private groups I'm in, but they have to understand that it's a situation of their own making. Sometimes, that's hard for some people to accept. It's even harder to rectify on their own.
Exactly. If there wasn't so many notorious camping spots surrounding places like Deciat and other key locations throughout the bubble I think a lot more people would be open to the idea of playing in open. I know I would at least. But there is just too many people out there whose idea of fun is to grief other players and that's just not how I want to enjoy the game.

Go ahead make sure my name ends up on those lists. The notoriety is priceless to me.

Indeed. Gankers and griefers have made their bed over many years.

Lay in it and accept that responsibility.

I can't help you with that. I don't care who you are, will never think about you, and have no need for block lists to enjoy or manage Open play.

How do you determine that's happening?
Common sense? For example if a player interdicts another player and blows them up just for the fun of it then that person is a troll. Or if someone is in a federal Corvette and is interdicting new players who are trying to go to Deciat then that person is a troll.

Short answer? Anyone whose idea of fun is ruining the nights of other people. So basically murder hobos and people like them.
I wouldn't worry about that guy. He's the only one I've ever had to block on Inara and elsewhere. All he wants to do is argue, and yes, he's one of the people who advocates seal clubbing. There's no profit to be had in a discussion there. XD

I can sympathize with folks that want to play solo, but it is a little too... sterile for my taste. The unpredictability of open is what is alluring to me, and I don’t even PvP. I mostly fly ships designed to run away via speed. It’s why my mining ship is an Imperial Clipper, I can make a fast get-away.

It doesn’t always work out, and I’ve been blown up a few times now and then, such as when I was flying my python, or when I was taking a ship to Farseer for the first time. Some of those folks were just waiting for me and other newer players in Deciat in my early days of learning the ropes.

I’d say those early stumbles made me more resourceful in the end. I escaped yet again from another situation today, unscathed. It was someone who has killed me twice before. They were very much unsuccessful this time around. I doubt they will find much success in the future either.

Ah yes... "common sense."

You just assume you know the mind of the other player? I've shot down thousands of players in this game. Never once was it with the intention of "ruining their night."

So I guess I'm not a troll then, right?

People can seal club if they want. It's allowed by the game mechanics. If you don't want to play in Open you're more than welcome to play in Solo or Private Group.

I just don't under stand how people who play in Solo exclusively know so much about what is going on in open mode. And no, hear-say doesn't make you an expert on it.

I love to see all the complains if there are big block lists and nobody can instance with anybody anymore. Right now even being squadron mates and being in a wing doesn't guaranty to be in the same instance. It will be fun. Hopefully I can block players with non-empty block lists from docking on my carrier, I don't want any of that ones around it breaking the fragile instancing. I want it to be a hub for player communication and fun.

That’s fine. Make them do the extra step. I don’t really care if there will be people working around it. There will still be more people in open.

The idea that someone has to play with you, like it or not, is a bit weird to me. Is forcing someone to play with you, that has no interest in playing with you, actually fun?
All for blocking anyone that annoys you in game. No issue with it at all. They don't care if you are having fun, no reason you should care if they are having fun.

It's not for the troll to decide whether or not they are a troll it's for the players that interact with them.

Based on your attitude towards the subject though I think I have a fair idea of where you fall on the issue.

It’s not a matter of people playing with each other. It’s about how different peoples goals can cause their paths to cross in expected and unexpected ways and the resulting gameplay. Just like NPCs but actually interesting and challenging. For people so adamant about a space sim, there’s a lot of people who don’t want the unpredictability of humans that would actually be present.

it’s the difference between an “on rails” story vs an open world game. In the first everything fits into little boxes and nothing is out of place or unexpected. In the second you can mash it up, things interact unexpectedly, there’s intrigue. Guess it depends on if you want everything in nice little predefined boxes or if you want the unexpected.

I know, right? It's a bit like a writer that writes stories no one wants to read, then wonders why no one reads their stories. Seems to me the solution for getting more people to play Open is to create more content that would get people to play in Open in the first place -- and that would be on the people who play in Open, I would think.

I don't really think its that bad at all, I try to not post in the forum, but I can't help myself. The game is called Elite Dangerous for a reason because it is Dangerous by the vary nature of the game. The object of the game is to have has munch ships and money as possible, because each ship is a life, or you can rebuy your previous ship with insurance cost. Learn the game, Anarchy systems have no security, these are the PVP systems, the punishment system don't work in these systems unless your in a area controlled by a fractions station. Just because the system is anarchy does not mean the whole system is anarchy. You could have a federation space station, and a Empire space station right next to each other. System security of each type will patrol the area the space station controls.

I find it so interesting that no one really understands the interdiction system, I have like a 90% success rate of avoiding interdiction in super cruise. You don't have to hit all the markers just get close enough for it to count, this is how you escape combat. I can tell when AI interdict me and a player interdict me because its a lot harder to evade, but you just have to out maneuver the other player or AI. Personally I don't care about pilots they won't bother me none, except the AI keep interdicting me when I have no cargo.

Also the game is PVE+combat PVP players are welcome to join any combat zone on either side.

But what do I know?

The Solo kid talking with authority about Open Play. Oh, you clearly fall on the troll side then!

(See how that works?)
You are openly defending trolling. What do you expect me to do other than think you are also a troll?

If you wanna have a discussion then let's have a discussion, but you seem to just be talking really loudly and ignoring what everyone else is saying. That's not a discussion. That's trolling.
