In case you wonder why you get ganked in open

You and I both know "it was just a guess" is just a cover to say horrible things and not own up to it.
No. As I posted, it was just a guess. You may be a combat veteran suffering from PTSD, and so you take out your frustrations on other players in-game as an outlet, or you may be a former manager who failed at his job and was demoted, you may be on your third marriage after two failed ones, and so ... but I could go on guessing all day long ... but I won't. Suffice it to state ... just a guess
Besides why would a sociopath care about what other people thought about, for example, murdering someone and cannibalizing their organs in some sumptuous feast?
They generally don't, which manifests itself through their behavior.
You know, if that was their thing? Isn't not caring about consequences part and parcel with sociopathy?
If you meet one in-game, ask.
The fact I can step into the arena of Open Play and understand that antisocial behavior is allowed and encouraged by the game mechanics ...
... which of course allows, and others would argue ... encourages in-game sociopathic behavior ... or to be more PC we'll refer to it as jackassery.
... and very obviously know I can't buy a spaceship made of guns in real life and kill people with it is a pretty good sign I'm definitely not a sociopath, right?
IRL, probably not, since there are consequences ... but I've already covered that, haven't I?
In any case, cheers!

No, greed is obviously the point for them.
Did you really just attribute months of real-life time of an exploration trip (which could take twice as long just to "be safe from gank") to greed? You're a funny one, that.

Also why on earth would I want to return with months of carthographic data in Open for... what exactly? The thrill of being hunted? Seriously? That engagement is as asymetrical as sol-deciat is to sol-beagle with nothing to gain. Absolutely nothing. But half a year to lose. Maybe it's worth for someone with a gambling problem. For me it's a nuisance which is easily brushed off by switching to solo. And player time is a commodity that's more unbalanced in ED than LTD price...

The moment they implement renegade and paragon system and make it worthwhile in Open, the moment I can consider taking part in it. As for now, there's nothing to gain for both parties and most valuable commodity - player time - lost.

You're permitted your wrong opinions, and they provide me amusement.

Is it possible the cigar is just a cigar?

Most gankers I know like to play the villain because it's fun. You shoot up a place, some folks come looking for revenge, maybe a couple lawfuls get called in, and a generally melee starts. That's exactly what I'm trying to do in New Borann right now, but it doesn't look like it'll happen. Probably move to Deciat next.

Let's consider another example: I originally came up with my Phisto Sobanii character because I wanted to see what playing the bad guy might be like. I'd just come off the Mass Effect series, and to be honest, I was tired of the same old hero tropes you see so often in video games. They're boring and often just barely rise to the level of good vs. evil bedtime story.

Ended up leading a rebellion against the Empire and bringing anarchy to Colonia. Phisto turned into quite the anti-hero and I learned a lot along the way (and had lots of fun!). I don't know about you, but that all sounds like a very positive use of my time and energy.

That said, I doubt you can see ganking beyond vague insinuations of abuse and cruelty. A real shame to see.

But that's just a guess of course! ;)

Yes. Here's what MarkAusten said which I replied to:

I don't doubt that it is the point for you, but probably entirely beside the point for the explorer returning with gazillions in cartography data.

"Gazillions in cartography data" is obviously referring to credits. If you're so focused on your huge haul you fail to take basic measures to defend yourself and get blasted (by say deciding Open in Shinrarta is the place to sell!) I can only presume greed made you stupid.

I also don't care what mode you choose to sell in. Just don't expect pity when you do it in Open and lose.

Certainly. And a sociopath is just a sociopath. Source (https://www.healthline.com/health/mental-health/sociopath#diagnosis-and-symptoms):
  1. Doesn’t respect social norms or laws. They consistently break laws or overstep social boundaries.
  2. Lies, deceives others, uses false identities or nicknames, and uses others for personal gain.
  3. Doesn’t make any long-term plans. They also often behave without thinking of consequences.
  4. Shows aggressive or aggravated behavior. They consistently get into fights or physically harm others.
  5. Doesn’t consider their own safety or the safety of others.
  6. Doesn't follow up on personal or professional responsibilities. This can include repeatedly being late to work or not paying bills on time.
  7. Doesn’t feel guilt or remorse for having harmed or mistreated others.
Those identified as "gankers" in-game often exhibit the majority of the above in-game. Since the in-game rules are permissive and the consequences for breaking what few rules exist in open are comical, such behavior can and does run mostly unchecked. Again, I've no doubt they're upstanding citizens IRL, but once in-game, they transform into in-game sociopaths.

Since the rest of your post details how folks like to play the role of the sociopath, I've no argument against that - they do.

So why all the hand wringing about what in their real life drives them to such dastardly deeds? They were bullied in school, shot up in a war, lost their job, and whatever other garbage you pull out of your head.

You... you don't think Mads Mikkelsen actually eats people, do you?

He doesn't !!! When did that happen?

No hand-wringing - just analysis. The behavior of folks intrigues me, so I observe it and comment on it. When folks detonated themselves against us or attempted to neutralize us in Iraq, I wasn't angry at them, I just neutralized them and moved on. But I was still fascinated by their motivations.

I don't know who or what that is.

Ask @GreySix about it. I can only guess that Mads endured some horrible trauma that lead him to play a serial killer on a TV show.

Not unlike how James Earl Jones developed a thing for cleaving people in two with a laser sword.

Yeah, people get upset when you invade their country and kill them.

But that's just a guess.
