they could sell some "ad blocker" module in the store for those that would prefer some payment above adverts in game ;)

 This is the most evil proposal I have ever heard... because I would actually consider paying for that.

For the record: I will not play or support a game that forces me to watch ads (beyond those for Zorgon Peterson, Faulcon de Lacey & Remlok).

I had no idea this existed. Why isn't this causing more of a storm? I won't tolerate this at all.

Yes the likes of Virgin Galactic or CocaCola would be reasonably ok but we know this won't happen. What is more likely to happen is flying into a space station only to be greeted with adverts for Angry Birds and Farmville.

I simply cannot believe that with all the talk from David Braben about immersion and realism that he would allow such a thing in Elite.

I really am surprised that so many people in this thread are being so relaxed about it.

we are relaxed because it doesn't exist ;)
FD just has kept themseves this as an option

And it might just be used for showing ads for paint jobs and other types of cosmetic purchases. That text would still be needed in that case.

And there always can go something wrong financially... i think we experienced something like that in the past few years ;)
Options are needed...else if something happens the only option would be "we will have to shut the servers down because we have no options".

Everyone wants more options in the game but if FD wants some for their business...

For me it wouldn't be a huge problem - only if it interferes with gameplay.

Adverts are supposed to attract you. That distraction alone, taking your mind from the environment and shoving a product under your nose, especially an unaffordable product, would be a little bit of a grievance.

don't have any problem with in game advertisement for games without monthly fee, they need to keep cash flowing in and that's one of the good ways to do ;)

I also agree. But allowing somebody, a third party profiteer to upload to your computer, take data via in game play "how many adverts you where visually exposed to" while promising not to take any other data; haven't we learnt anything about Humans.

EDIT... I'm still going to get BETA though.

Hate to say it but its true..

No matter what Frontier add to the game, game affecting micro-transactions, buyable credits with real money, better ships/weapons for real money, etc etc There will ALWAYS be people who defend them all the way and say how great it is.

I'm not saying for one moment they will add that stuff, just saying if they did, people would support it and say how great it was. (I've seen it before with online communities)

We already have the adverts though, it's just that they are for fictional companies, at stations and outside docking slots. I have no issue if they are replaced with real world company logos rendered sympathetically. I don't care if I see a Pepsi logo outside Freeport station vs a Remlok logo

"Rendered sympathetically" Is something that will never happen. Real world companies have no interest in tailoring their ads for small specialized markets, it's too expensive. If ads make it into the game they'll be copy-pasted from Java banner ads already in existence.

As long as it's limited small billboards like the holograms outside the station airlocks I'm fine with it.

We may see adverts on stations and buildings when we can walk around. But it would be nice to see them animated with sound.

I just ignore the hard sell adverts in real life anyway, so no problem for me ;)

On the other side of the coin. No matter what Frontier adds you will always get those that complain when it comes to a company making money. Just saying it works both ways. Human nature and all that.

I'd like to conduct a little thought experiment:

Imagine you are running Frontier Developments. You've finished making the initial game. It has sold well enough. All possible expansions have now been produced and these too have sold well enough. No further expansions are possible.

New sales of both the game and expansions are now non-existant.

You have a group of servers that handle the online aspects of the game. The servers cost money to run. This cost is monthly.

As you now have no income from sales, continuing to run these servers means that you are making a loss.

What would YOU do in this situation? Some possible answers are:

1 - Shut down the servers
2 - Introduce a monthly subscription for those who benefit from using the servers.
3 - Something else.

If your answer is 3, then please tell me exactly what you would do

To answer your question, in THAT particular instance, I'd shutdown the servers.

But.. I might add I was one of those people who actually wanted a monthly subscription in the first place!! A monthly sub of say £5-10 would give Frontier the cash they need to run the servers and we could avoid the stupid microtransactions that are creeping in.

I know what your saying. Completely understand it. Considering my information is used every time I'm on Google. A local car dealer or a new curry house advert in my area pops up when I surf. I go to maps and it tells me where I am, like I'm the one that's lost.! There's a lot of software that gathers information in much the same way I suppose. So really there's not that much of a risk compare to most of them.

It going to be hectic, looking over your shoulder for the griever and ahead, so you smash into a kilometre long bill board.

Personally, I'm not defending anyone. I'd rather not see ingame advertisements to be honest, but the additional finances FD get from companies who promote their products on the back of ED will ultimately benefit everyone who buys the game. So, I accept it as a necessary evil.
