Issue Tracker: Planetary Tiling

Maybe I'm easily pleased, :) but I still get a slight sense of awe when I am in some system a gazillion lightyears from anywhere, that noone has ever been in before, fly to a planet, pick a point entirely at random, land on it, can drive on it, know that if I see a hill off to my side somewhere I can drive or walk to the top of it, and appreciate that every single dot in the sky plots where it should from the galactic map, and could be visited. I accept tiling of some kind somewhere is likely to be needed, to be able to render all those planets, but honestly, have no issue with it, and have never actually noticed it. So a vote from me in thanks for putting resources elsewhere :D

I no longer play Elite after they abandoned VR and after abandoning the Console players (which thankfully I am not one)
I like to check in here from time to time to see what's going on with Elite... basically, bad decisions were made in order to implement Odyssey and anything that is difficult to fix - won't be fixed. That is the real message from Fdev. But, hey... enjoy that new paint job or FC interiors. That's about what you will get from now on - just eye candy.

Planet gen is basically an empty world with some rocks scattering. And some plants, in cluster because otherwise the engine can't handle it.
If that's heavy on the GPU, you are doing it very wrong.
Well surely that’s why the planet gen needs to be part of optimisation efforts. No point* in doing a load of optimisation of assets, etc. if they’re all on a background which isn’t also being optimised.

*Figuratively speaking. There’s obviously still some merit in doing it if performance enhancements can be leveraged.

"Cargo Hatch"? Jettisoning one feature after the other.
Oh well, Update 12 will arrive before the end of next month, along with the announcement that EDO is now considered 'complete' and that all PC versions will now run on the 4.0 client. Followed by an announcement in November that ED as a whole is to be discontinued in May 2023 and all services will end on 31st May.

Just guessin', you realise...

My 2 cents. I'm somewhat disappointed though I haven't really seen or been bothered by the tiling issue. But kudos to FDev for honest communication on an issue, instead of staying silent and not saying anything at all. I'm sure they have a lot of hot potatoes to handle and hope that this frees up time to handle some of the other issues that impact the game in a much bigger way.

Thanks for the update. The tiling issue has been overblown anyway, and really isn’t a problem on most planets. I’ve been very happy with the overall look of things while exploring.

Yeah it's there sure, but the screenshots in the issue report are some of the most egregious and rarely do I see anythign even close to that level. You only really see this if you're searching for it basically.

Any procedural generation is always going to have weird outliers.

Any piccy's showing what this tiling issue actually is?
Feel free to leaf through the mega thread about it, with all the back and forth and whatnot that entails.

Note that most of the pics are of the tech when it first released, not the way it looks now. It's gotten much better since launch.

i gotta say, I had to look it up to figure out what this issue is. I didnt buy/play Odyssey before september, and have never had any issues with it.
So my thumbs up for this

Few months ago I booted Horizon by accident and it was quite painful in contrast.
Odyssey is apparently a Horizons Inverter gate - it causes people who used to love Horizons to now hate it, and people who used to hate Horizons to now love it (using binary love / hate to go with the logic gate analogy).

It's really weird, but I'm as guilty of this as you are, just on opposite sides of the bit flip.
