Issue Tracker: Planetary Tiling

How I see the TILTING problem. Some pictures of planets posted did really look bad.

(Sorry, couldn't resist)

This isn't really a satisfying answer to what I think was considered a big problem by a large portion of the community and a major selling point of the Odyssey expansion.

I think a discovery scanner style breakdown of Odyssey terrain generation would help people appreciate it more, there's maybe interesting astrogeological stuff going on behind the scenes that would be interesting to learn about. There could even be good reasons why the obvious solutions like "just add more different tiles" wouldn't work. This of course assumes that there's anyone passionate about planetary terrain generation left in FDev who would like to show off whats actually cool about it.

I was never a huge fan of the idea of space legs while I'd like for FDev to succeed at whatever they're attempting with Elite. I can understand the decision - it would be best to cut your losses and stop polishing a turd.

Unfortunately I think Odyssey and the new engine overall is still too broken to focus on any space content and/or fleshing out existing mechanics.

Ultimately this is just another item in the long list Odyssey Disappointments.

Feel free to leaf through the mega thread about it, with all the back and forth and whatnot that entails.

Note that most of the pics are of the tech when it first released, not the way it looks now. It's gotten much better since launch.

Right!

No, it'd have to be much more noticeable than that, for me to notice, let alone be concerned about it.

We’ll continue to strive for the best possible experience for the highest number of players which our current focus allows us to do. We hope you’ll appreciate the reasoning behind this decision.
I have noticed that recently there's tendency to communicate how they're going to do less and less.
I don't have high hopes for future tbh.

The assumption that there were developers who worked on the console version and now can work on other projects. I don't believe that noone worked on the console version for the last year.

Well, ofc no one was working on the console ports. All hands were on polishing the engine to achieve a decent performance on PC.
The man himself made an official announcement about it July 12th, 4th paragraph

Also the assumption that there were developers who worked on a tiling fix (how else could they find out what effort would be required to fix it) and now these devs can be relocated to other projects to.

No, they didnt work on it. They only evaluated the effort needed to fix it.
It's in the first post, come on

After spending some time to observe the effects of the issue while weighing-up the costs to resolve it...

When you have very limited resources to work with - you do really need to carefully prioritize the projects that will see those resources invested in.
And currently they do seem to went through a lot of cuts, leaving the ED team with very very limited resources.

Good decision....this is one of those things, that if it ever gets fixed, takes a few months to notice and you think "oh, they fixed tiling". And they do little fixes all the time, with barely to no mention of it, so when they actually do fix it, it may not even be a big deal.

Odyssey is apparently a Horizons Inverter gate - it causes people who used to love Horizons to now hate it, and people who used to hate Horizons to now love it (using binary love / hate to go with the logic gate analogy).

It's really weird, but I'm as guilty of this as you are, just on opposite sides of the bit flip.
Not at all. I don't hate Horizons and enjoyed it a lot, obviously. I just see a lot of improvements that EDO brought. I was getting quite bored with explo and EDO changed that. I just see loads of things that Horizon never got, and after thousands of hours I had seen all horizons had to offer.

Don't feel like that myself. Coincidence is not the same as correlation.

It was pretty plain EDO performance was in a bad place (re: consoles) and not only was regenerating the galaxy in the first place (with it's well known tourist spots from EDH goiing) already a very bold move, doing so again - esp. without Kay Ross at the company any more - could get extremely messy. For me these two bits of news are both value judgements and it's pretty easy to see the logic behind both if you ask me (which I know you didn't).

I've not found this an issue, even though I have seen one or two oddities. I've put it down to ancient Guardian geo-engineering and moved on because, in the many more places where the EDO Stellar Forge is good, for my money it is, very good. Not something that's ever worried me in game for more than about three seconds to be honest.

Yeah, same here. Last night I used the DSS on a planet which looked fine prior to the scan, but when the blue heatmap appeared, I could see tiling. My mind automatically and subliminally applied red circles, but then I remembered it was just a computer game and I landed and went about my business.

Greetings Commanders,

We’d like to take this opportunity to address the Tiling Planetary Features issue from the Issue Tracker.

After spending some time to observe the effects of the issue while weighing-up the costs to resolve it, we have decided to focus those resources elsewhere. Reducing or preventing the tiling effect would require a deep-overhaul of fundamental systems, which in turn would disrupt other aspects of the game. This would inevitably take time away from developing and improving other elements such as performance, bug fixes, and new content. We cannot justify this level of change and a re-generation of the galaxy in Elite. This is unlikely to change in the future so the issue will be closed, freeing up votes on the tracker for other issues.

We’ll continue to strive for the best possible experience for the highest number of players which our current focus allows us to do. We hope you’ll appreciate the reasoning behind this decision.

Excellent decision, team.
Now, please, please, please, focus on the aliasing/shimmering issues that (unlike tiling) are perfectly capable of taking away any joy from exploring the galaxy.

It's not about this specific issue, which is maybe annoying sometimes (especially when you find planet that looks like easter egg), but I can live with it. I also understand that fixing it might be more problematic that it's worth.

It's more about how I feel Odyssey launch impacted the game. I don't think it was a success in any sense of the word (especially financially, but also it proved how problematic it is for them to develop this game) and I'm afraid that Frontier is cutting costs, which we see when they announce (when they can be bothered to announce anything - which in turn is probably caused by more bad than good news they might have) how this or that will not be implemented, worked on, etc.

I'm probably just me being pessimistic, but that's how it feels to me. I will not bet on any future DLC, like atmospheric planets f.ex, being made for this game.

(Did I finally make a forum account for this? Mayhaps, mayhaps)

You mentioned "this level of change and a re-generation of the galaxy" ... I would love to learn more about the details on this (as in, tecnhical deep-dive on it).

Resources to do it aside, it would be beyond cool to have an updated galaxy with IRL advances and discoveries made since the game's creation. If that could be slipped in with whatever other stuff that also requires regenerating everything... I say, dewit if it ever becomes possible?
I would hope at some point there would be something like this once we have all the major features in the game, or at a point where incorporating a major feature in the game would allow for it. It could also address the 64bit overflow issue in certain ring systems and also the cubes of stars too. Though if it cannot be done without wiping discoveries, then I say it is what it is.
