Lifetime pass payback time

its not really free, LEP owners have simply paid in advance and Frontier accounted for that revenue

revenue growth to Frontier (a share holder company) is not coming from LEP owners in the form of expansions, hence the question of % of LEP owners in the recent active player base.

Last time I checked, FD have not accounted for all that money as revenue. There are comments in their accounts about releasing a portion of the LEP money to revenue. This means that some of this money is still in the balance sheet as a liability. You can conclude from this that FD have assessed that legally and from an accounting point of view, they have not yet fully delivered on what players have purchased in their LEP.

This must be especially true for anyone who purchased an LEP in late 2015, since those players have had zero value so far from the additional price of their LEP so far. They could have bought the Horizons package and been in exactly the same position today.

The fact that FD even sold those LEPs in late 2015 shows that they were confident at that time of at least one (probably two) more major paid expansions after season 2.

Yup, I just finished reading the whole thread and the resounding consensus is that the Lifetime Expansion Pass was well worth it.

Question answered! Srsly; the sky is not falling. It never was. :D

(I still wish I could find more lifetime subscriptions to other services. I did some searching but haven't found anything even remotely as interesting. Any ideas/suggestions?)

I have no idea of stats but it wouldn't surprise me if LEP holders generally make more cosmetic purchases.

I never ever paid any vanity items for any games in my life (until ED).
I am a LEP owner.

I have spend far more money on cosmetic in this game than I care to admit.
:)

Yeah that is a good point, what I was trying to say is "its on their books and balance sheets"

With a season 3 looking less likely and FD moving to a more random DLC method of delivery, do any of you other paid lifetime pass holders think that you'll get your monies worth from it in the end
As an LEP owner, providing FD do not try and charge us for (or block us out from) future content (cosmetic items excluded of course) then there is no issue in my books.

The method of delivery is largely irrelevant.

ME too ! :)

I have even bought stuff for ships I can't yet afford. Must be said I paid a lot for my tail end of Alfa pass, but it's been worth it.

I hope they never change the way the base game plays. I'm all for them making storylines for those without imagination, but just make sure we traditionalists have lot to do also.

I want above all else for the bugs to be sorted out in preference to updates.

... and maybe more variety in missions.
We've even lost mission types and had increased complexity introduced which could have been fitted into the exiting mechanics.

But all in all the base game is the same as it's been since day one so it's great.

:)

Those LTP owners saying they've already got their money's worth... does it not occur to you that if you'd just paid for ED and Horizons it would've been considerably cheaper for the same amount of content?

The reason I bought LEP was to avoid having to value justify each patch. In terms of value for money the entertainment value from the game, beta's , forums etc is the best value I have ever had in gaming. Yes I could have got it cheaper at this point, but who knows going forward. The thing is I paid five years ago, so its a sunk cost. The other interesting thing is its actually saved me money, because I actually in the last 5 years have spent less money on new games than I ever used to.

(Isn't the initial LEP already cheaper than buying ED and Horizons? So I'm going to assume you're talking about the more-recent more-expensive LEP, which is what I got)

Even so I suspect the question is a bit of a straw man, but for the sake of argument: To get the same amount of content as the LEP without buying a LEP is actually quite time consuming - you have to always stay up to date in the scene to get the time-exclusives, and this has two problems for me: 1. My time is worth a lot to me, so I only want to be putting time into participating when I feel like it and because I'm enjoying it, not because I'm trying to get a coupon deal or because of Fear Of Missing Out. This is worth A Lot to me :) Related to that is 2. a reason I enjoy this game long-term is because I ensure I don't have perverse incentives tempting me to engage with it when I don't feel like it, causing burn-out. Instead I just wander off for weeks or months at a time knowing that when I come back the game will be better than ever with heaps of fresh content on top of that, and that I won't have missed out on any timed-exclusives.

TL;DR: The LEP offers a service that is valuable to me which the other option lacks. Obvs if monetary cost is the only cost someone wants to factor, then whether the most-expensive LEP is cheaper won't be known for years.

But that's not a lifetime...

In reality, my timing would have been wrong if I had done it that way, and I would have missed out on the Cobra IV, ..... and then no black friday paint jobs ... and no AspX in gold, and I would have missed out on some of the betas ..... but with the LEP I don't have to worry about these things and can look forward to the rest of the journey without any stress ;)

Edit ... that was a reply to BostromNZ

when frontier would call future content DLC or upgrade modules and not call it expansions anymore,
nothing wat we can do when they decide LEP owners must pay for future content

there are gamecompanies that used these tricks so that they don't needed to pay royalties anymore

I hope so.
We better get what we paid for,ppl saying i had my moneys worth don't cut it with me.
Trading Standards could have a thing or two to say to FD if they effectively cancel LEP agreements, I think FD are unlikely to fall foul of that.

Just because they change their deployment model from Seasons to more targeted Expansions should not invalidate the LEP.

I got a Lifetime expansion pass for £120.00 on September 2015. I believe that is would pay for itself several times over. However I find it interesting that paintjobs, decals, skip kits etc are not covered by the pass so these are not an expansion to the game? It would have been a great way to thank those people that made that commitment to the game in the early stages.

There have been "some" paint jobs gifted to players that are either LEP owners or pre-ordered Horizons. As for them being not covered by the pass, they are purely cosmetic upgrades and not truly expansions to the game.
