MATERIAL TRADERS FILTER in Galaxy map IS COMPLETE USELESS

I just got back to the bubble (first time in civilized space since 3.0 dropped) and I used the filter to find traders with no problem. Now I know why there were only a few showing, but I went to three starports and got all the mats I needed to max G5 my FSD, sensors, drive, and power supply.

Took about 30 minutes in total.

I just started playing again and thought this was a bug. Why would traders drop off the map when I could still see black markets and interstellar factors? I don't mind needing to have visited them before, or bought the system data, for them to show up, but why have different distances for different filters? When I'm at an engineer base, all the traders I need are more than 40 ly away, so I need to use bookmarks.

This is STUPID!, and sadly it's totally unexpected from FD.

I forgot my spaceship computer only has 64kB of memory. Funny how they can cram in the star type for every star in the galaxy, but don't have room to display material traders, that I have already visited, more than 40 LY away. This is BEYOND stupid.

the thing is - there are no planetary based material traders at all,
and since material traders will only trade materials based on whats present at the station - none will trade grade5 planetary only raw materials :(

I suspect there is some misunderstanding here as well.

The Materials Trader filters work just fine for me - of course, this may be due to the fact that I've traveled so extensively throughout inhabited space. It's pretty rare that I open the galaxy map, filter for materials traders and not find at least one.

The misunderstanding, I believe, is with the "must have previously discovered them." I can say for certain that many of the materials traders I have never previously visited, though I may well have visited the stations where they are located. I've certainly visited the systems they are located in though.

The 40ly limit just makes no sense to me.

This is the real problem with the feature -- 40 LY is a pointless restriction and is extremely limiting.

The 40ly limit completely undermines the usefulness of the feature. It is impractical and makes no logical sense. Why would your ships computer only remember this info 40ly from the system but I can bookmark any other body in the known galaxy?

I really think that once a player discovers something then it should be as easy as possible to view that data (filtering material content % of planets I’ve discovered is another area worthy of attention).

After over 1000 hours in the game, it makes sense to me that what I discover is recorded and then made readily accessable through in game tools so it can be used to develop my ships / progress careers etc.

Having to re-jump around and hope of coming within 40ly of, for example, a human tech broker, is not good gameplay. It is the direct opposite - a big turn off. Minimising needless jumping should be a key objective of all future updates.

The services filter 40ly issue can of course be overcome quite easily - I just check contacts in every new station and add a bookmark!

But the services filter was designed to do this automatically. So the jump limit makes it redundant as if you’re more than 40ly from where you need to be, you’re reduced to randomly jumping around to re-find things you’ve already jumped around trying to find in the first place!

I really do feel there should be no ly limit at all applied to the services filter.

I didn’t follow many of the livestreams leading up to the release. Have FD commentated on their logic behind this decision and why a ly limit is, in their view, necessary on this feature?

Any restrictions would be pointless: these guys are running a business, right? I cannot think of a single reason why would they want to play hide and seek instead of advertising themselves openly.
Unless they live in constant fear of some random CMDR taking revenge against them for their ripoff rates, which would be understandable.

And of course, yet another gameplay opportunity missed: investigate, find the trader's supply run, camp, ambush the ship, board it, steal it, get filthy mats-rich, give to the poor (or sell :D ).

I give 3 stones, you give 2 sticks of wood.

I'm sorry, is this the stone age again? Why can't we even buy those mats? Why can't we bargain or threaten the trader to get a better trading rate? Why can't we trade between players and friends at a MUCH better trading rate? Why do those traders even exist, really?...

Oh, right, gameplay.

Actually it's a myth societies started with barter and ended with money and then credit. Credit (via tally sticks et al) was very common and people mainly used it before money developed. As you were. :)
