Engineers Medium Security Settlement List and Guide for Modified Embedded Firmware

So how do I, for example scan the 5 data points at a settlement to get my cracked firmware without trespassing? I must have missed something.
Haven't needed to do this since the summer so maybe something's changed. Never seen ships day around before. I hate anything to do with the buggy.......

To do the scan you are anyway must use SRV scanner, so there is no other option (just don't forget to turn drive assist off).
Also, nothing drastically changed since this summer.
As before, if a larger-then-tiny base is not "fenced", than you can always find a way to do the scan without alerting local security forces.
As I've said above - just don't shoot defenders, don't trespass restricted areas (or do this quickly), don't scan "private" terminals - and defenders will ignore you. Data points in settlements bigger then tiny are always in "public" (open) access mode.
Besides this thread (a good collection of hints about any settlement-related aspect) on your journey you can use:

About CIF - looks like medium security small-medium size bases are the first candidates to search for..

89 Leonis - 7D - Burgess Holdings
89 Leonis - 7D - Payne's Inheritance

Burgess is 5 scans for MEF, just got 4 from one run.
Paynes 4 scans and no MEF.

Have a mate attempting Paynes now to confirm, but the scans finished in the cargo area and I got the data package.

/Also promoted to Dangerous with pilots which I already am [blah]

Scan is counted only when all DAPs are scanned (in the given time), there is no relation between number of daps and materials collected.
Also, what you got from a particular scan is random (however this "random" follow certain rules/distribution).
You got four "seeds" (12 units) from one base? Really good shot.
List on the first page is good, but a bit... outdated =) (dates up to 2.1, I think) - current list counts more then 600 records.

Many many thanks for the help and time. Much appreciated.
I hate driving - wish it wasn't in the game.
I have "learnt" the medium exploring settlements down to a "T" - the ones from the front page. I guess I'm being lazy and not going to any of the others. I've got a run list of 6 that I use when I need to go farming. In an Asp they were close by and easy to do. Now they seem to have ships landed there so I need to get rid of them first using my Python.

From above, I guess you're saying I don't have to go to medium to get the materials. mmmmm. Interesting. Which ones are the ones which aren't "ringed off"?
I've got 10 cracked firmware for 5 lots of dirty thruster attempts for my vulture and FDL. Then I need a good few more for the Power Distributors.

Thanks again, I'll keep at it until I've got 20, then that's it.

No it isn't, I'll have to go farming for materials...............argh I hate driving lol.

And exactly here I don't catch - why you are trying to get rid of them???
Look: =)

(yes, here I'm making some sefies with an oddly parked npc ship)

As far, as you don't provoke aggression they are absolutely harmless*. As all other types of base defenses (skimmers/turrets/etc).
(*)Since 2.2 only one "annoying" feature has been introduced - your srv's turret and vertical thrusters are disabled in the nearest proximity of an npc-ship
The biggest part of this thread is dealing with an absolutely peaceful - without any fighting - base scanning approach. Normally you don't need any weapons for this, and an unarmed sidewinder with an srv is sufficient. Only srv-scanner, you don't need SRV turret weaponry.
If a given base is not "fenced" then - park your ship outside of the restricted-for-flight-area (RAF), board your srv, drive, do the DAP scans, return - done.
"Fenced" bases are those marked with "threat level" greater than 1 in my "base locations" spreadsheet (link #2 above). All bases with "threat level" 0-1 are "free-to-scan". Also, in my main mapping spreadsheet (first link above) on the "ED:H 2.1 MAPS" page you can check the "PSP" column in the "Ground" area. PSP=Proximity Sensors, Perimeter="fence", so if there is "1" - skip this base.
About what kind of bases to look for - see statistics page - "More stats", taking into account quantity of the bases of each type used for calculation (or use filters in the list). Cannot say definitely what bases are the best to look for. Medium Security bases of a Small/Medium Sizes (MxM,SxM) shows so far the best yield of CIF (ignore high-security bases as the amount of statistical data collected for them is ridiculous, and they are all normally "fenced")

Anyone else not able to get the maps to display?

EDIT: Working now, maybe it was just me

Oh.
Funny.
I think when I saw my first video the person scanned something else on the roof first, which triggered the alert.
By scanning the data point indeed nothing has turned red lol.

Thanks SO MUCH. Gotta catch 'em all now!

Those "alerts" where you hear an audio "warning" that you're accessed the database or entered a restricted area, etc., mean nothing on the Medium security bases if it's just audio. The areas you need to watch out for are the restricted perimeters in the bases that are marked in red, if you get a visual text warning on your HUD then you should leave the red area before it triggers a fine/bounty. With the map scan paths that Djadjok has on his maps you don't actually need to enter any of the restricted areas, all of the scans can be made from ground level looking up at the roof or scanning through walls where you can get a data point signal.

picked up 2 packs in Burgess and 1 in Payne's.

Had some fun with iMovie and made a video on how to do an exploration layout. Doing all of the exploration and industrial layouts (except for Kokary) I got 30 MEF and 20 cracked industrial firmware which were the 2 I needed most. And as much as I hate grinding I have to admit I had fun doing these runs. Flying in and out not so much but it was fun seeing what I would get and the end.

Djadjok, I've updated the links in the guide to link to the updated versions of the spreadsheets and maps. The settlement overview maps you've made are quite nice, the inset pictures with the orthogonal view of the rendered settlement layouts is quite nice for recognition and the additional details such as timer information is quite helpful as well. I was using the spreadsheet yesterday as my usual list of bases still hadn't reset and I was wondering if there is some way to change the Reference System to find the closest bases for any given location? There didn't seem to be any option in the filter or anywhere else on the spreadsheet to do this but I could be missing something.

There are now some options:
1) "Classic" way - you can always change the reference system if you make a personal copy of the list ("File->Make copy...") - so you'll have full control/(i.e. "edit) anything you want (and reference system coordinates as well). With the "original" copy this doesn't work.
2) Other approach - somewhere earlier mentioned site created by cmdr Haps. There you can select the reference system and mark settlements that you have visited already. Much more "handy" then dealing with google spreadsheets. The only possible "negative" side - I don't know how frequently Haps updates his database with the entries from my list.

Thanks, that website version of the list is quite helpful. The option to check only the types of bases you want to use is a nice feature as well.

Sorry to ask - but is there a legend for the maps somewhere? I am not sure I can figure out what all the symbols mean?

Alright so the "odds" of getting the Modified Embedded Firmware is... bull. I've done 10 of the bases listed in this excel sheet (thanks, btw!) and I've found it ONCE. I wouldn't mind so much but half the level 5 weapons need this specific one, even though I'm up to my eyeballs in nearly all of the other level 4-5 data packages which have little use, really for anything.

I'm not one to say that something needs to be tweaked very often, but... something needs to be tweaked. Or at least have another way of getting it intead of bouncing around canned maps in a rover.

I'm another one to say THANKS for the thread and resources but "phooey" to Modified Embedded Firmware.
Finally got whatever I needed last week, but the 6 bases in my recent search (different to the ones I did last week)! and no MEF.
Think I'll do something else whilst this gets sorted.

You guys are targetting medium security settlements, think I read + and ++ being most likely? The spreadsheet contains all types of bases.

I did 3-4 med sec bases plus some low sec ones yesterday and got 2 drops of MEF, loads of CIF, loads of CSD, loads of other stuff...

Oh..................
Thanks. I'll look into it. Some day.
And again, I can't rep you. again.....
