Game Discussions Microsoft Flight Simulator

Microsoft Panoramic Video Simulator 2020 looks gorgeous.

I use a 21:9 monitor too (3440x1440) and it works a treat with Elite Dangerous as well as MSFS! :D

For those adventurous souls (aren't we all, being explorers of the galaxy here!) and want to try the A320, this video is good tutorial about how to programme it for take off. Unfortunately it doesn't show you how to land! Enjoy...

I have to admit to being surprised that they have not provided a user guide even for the airliners. Anyone new to flight sims brought in by the hype around this release must wonder just what exactly is going on. I (and I am sure most other flt sim flyers) have guides from other products or the real world so using the FMCs and autopilots isn't totally arcane but some tyro trying to fire up the Airbus and complete a flight must wonder what on earth is going on.

Of course I could just be overlooking something provided in the sim somewhere, maybe buried in training. Anyone seen anything like that?

There is only training for the C152.

Regarding CTDs, is there a "dump file" or log or something I can look at to see WHY I'm getting these? I usually happens after flying for over an hour, about when I'm coming in for a landing (GRRRRR). I do have some things like Firefox running in the background, so I wonder if it's memory related. I'm not afraid to upgrade from 16 to 32 GB if it gets rid of CTDs, but it would help if I could narrow down the cause. Might just be buggy code 🤷

Yeah... I think my biggest problem with jets is the huge difference in airspeed and throttle control (I don't have a HOTAS). So basically overspeeding after take-off, and stalling during approach as I slow down too much, too early (which caused the crash last night). Need more practice and maybe read up on the various speeds one needs to follow during these procedures.

Was watching a Squirrel tutorial on landing yesterday - he's very good.

It was in the Cessna 152, and while I've been able to land that pretty well anyway, his explanations of the airspeeds needed / recommended for pretty much every part of a flight was really good and has made flying that particular plane much more stable. He suggested that for each new plane one wants to fly it's a good idea to find either a pilot's manual or at least the recommended airspeeds online... So I guess they really aren't in the game at all.

I remember the first version of MS Flight Sim I played had this kind of stuff in it, so a little surprised it's not in this one, although of course it's fairly easy to get this info online now.

On a different note, I have to say that I am finding the instrument views a bit dim... Am I missing an obvious way to make them brighter for an old pair of eyes? :)

When I did play, even for several hours I must admit it was fairly stable with no signs of CTD's...I have 64Gb of RAM though..whether that made a difference I've no idea.

Yeah Squirrel is one of the good ones.

I think even in FSX there used to be a reference section you could look up - am a bit disappointed that MSFS doesn't have that for some reason, it's not like a lot of work to add it. Don't really fancy flicking through a RL airplane manual likely as thick as a phonebook, but you can just google the key bits I suppose.

Regarding instrument lighting - there are working buttons in the cockpit to switch those on and even set the dimming (depending on the plane though).

Will have to look harder... :) Only found the dome light in the 152, which is hopeless for flying at night.

There's a "debug.log" in the same directory as the executable, but whether that has anything useful I dunno.

You can also enable the console if you enable developer mode in options. You could resize that & move it to another monitor (if you have one) while you're playing and keep an eye on it - something weird might happen when you CTD.

Ah yes, you might not have that in the 152 - I was flying the Citation last night which is why I was pleasantly surprised by the lighting options, which are much better:)

$200.00 for all the aircraft in MS with hundreds of them available in X-Plane plus highly detailed airports? No thanks.

As a X-Plane 11 veteran, I need to say that XP11 will always keep a rightful place in my cherished vault of fond memories. It was fantastic for it's time (and still is), brought amazing things like the entire world as standard, fully interactive 3D cockpits, great bindings UI and fantastic controller support, many beautifully detailed planes, amazing physics simulation, etc.

It gave me many, many hours of enjoyment. But MSFS2020, even with it's current launch warts, is an instant classic. It's at least as much of a leap from XP11, as XP11 had before been a huge leap from FSX. There is just no possible way I could go back to XP11 now. It would be like dropping IL-2 Sturmovik BOS and going back to MS Combat Flight Simulator 3, it's just impossible.

I do look forward to see what will the guys behind X-Plane will come up with in the future, they'll have to pull off something truly extraordinary if they want to sit on the civilian flight sim throne again. Perhaps a partnership with google...

I'm sort of on the same lines. I'm not an irl pilot, so sadly a lot of the fine points of the physics simulations are lost on me. However, as an armchair simmer I have a lot of fondness for XP11 because it was a fantastic upgrade over FSX. Default world-wide mesh and autogen were great, and ortho4xp was downright amazing. Also it's still my go-to non-DCS helicopter sim of choice. That said, the visual leap from FS is as amazing as ortho felt, except this time the illusion still works at much lower altitudes. For VFR, it's just an upgrade that's very difficult to go back from. And while the XP mod community game me some gems such as the Hugues 500 (complete with its Magnum PI livery), sheer numbers are bound to dwarf that offering with FS content.

If anything, it's almost criminal that XP11 didn't get more adoption/recognition after MS decided to dump everything. It had everything but the name and marketing budget, but that, sadly, was too big a factor. It's a pity that it's MS, of all people, who get all the cash and kudos as saviours of the franchise they decided themselves to murder. But that's how it is, and I can't see XP12 doing much better. The lead guy at Laminar didn't seem very interested in a recent interview, so all this past effort in bringing the franchise to a wider audience through worldwide scenery doesn't look like it'll be followed up much more. Fair play to them if they're happy with remaining the study sim in the shadow, but imho it's a pity as they deserved much for for actually bothering to carry the flame when MS added insult to injury with Flight and the Dovetail sale.
