Game Discussions Microsoft Flight Simulator

I haven't flown all winter (other games have been pulling at my heart strings), but once this super large (for me) download finishes, I'm going to give some winter flights a try. My biggest complaint was that the scenery photography was taken in spring while there was still snow in the woods and ice on the lakes (which looks rubbish in the default summer mode), so this might be the best time of year to fly over my homeland!

Seasons are still not in the game. Planned this year I believe, but not yet.

Just a really REALLY early observation concerning the Virpil throttle & Constellation Alpha grip which I just started sorting out this morning: MFS 2020 doesn't have a profile for either so it's a mind boggling amount of binding & experimenting in order to even get barely started, and that coupled with the fact that there are hundreds of button/hat switch combos between the two devices means that there's a lot of sweat equity required to get going with this boutique gear. With that said the stick and base (WarBRD) combo is the thing that I'm noticing the most right out of the gate, the controls compared to my t16000 are incredibly accurate and "tight." Twist for rudder, rolling and yawing, pitching up and down, all silky smooth and precise with an amazingly pleasurable sense of feedback. No drift or irritating sliding out of alignment aside from turbulence knocking you about; when you point or twist along a certain axis and then let go you stay where you want to be. Also, and this is something that really frustrated me on other controllers, the elevator trim (mapped to a 4-way hat switch on the throttle) is very precise, allowing for much more incremental control when leveling/climbing descending. The way it was on the previous controls is that I was constantly adjusting the trim with little to no noticeable impact when all of a sudden I'd be wildly climbing or descending, never really achieving the desired effect.

Anyhow, having lots of fun. I really think these items are a game changer, probably for any flying sim, really. Now I just need a recommendation for a combat sim to try it out on.

But winter is. Granted, it's pseudo-winter, but if the ground is covered in snow, then my scenery should in theory look more realistic for this time of year. Except for the green leaves on all the trees, but surely someone has a bare tree mod out by now, no?

A bit of advise they have sales quite frequently. DCS world has 2 free plane to play with. With great battles buy from the site not steam. See what planes you like and buy that one, then wait for a sale and buy the rest.
PS always buy the premium versions ;)

Can I just buy and play the Bodenplatte expansion or do I need to first by the base game?

I know that the latest world update royally screwed up the dynamics of flaps ingame, but how about general behavior of planes in flight such as top speed? Fiddling with new complicated gear and I might just be missing some fine tuning features, but it seems like the King Air I was test flying last night was really struggling to maintain 280 TAS at 25000 feet altitude. Heck, even in a steep dive of 4500 per minute I had a hard time getting it to go any faster. I'm just going from memory but it seems like before that craft was having no trouble at all reaching and maintaining 340+ TAS at cruising alt. Is my memory wrong, am I I missing some crucial mixture/pitch/throttle config or did the update nerf some airspeeds?

@Revenant69 Haven't noticed any speed issues in the planes I've flown since the update - Cessna 172, TBM 930 and Cessna CJ4.

On another note, I have finally succeeded in getting VNAV working in the CJ4 using the Working Title Mod. If people like playing around with navigation and a properly working FMS, I'd highly recommend it. Took me a while to get it figured out watching many Youtube guides, but most satisfying completing the first successful VNAV descent to intercept an ILS approach.

Moving on I will now try to do a complete VNAV approach which opens up instrument assisted landings to pretty much any airport. :)

I'm trying to learn all that as well; any videos you'd care to recommend I'd highly be interested in.

Doing the long-haul LFBD to KSEA (Asobo HQ to Microsoft HQ) flight for the achievement whilst working from home! ;-) 1900nm in so just over halfway I think...

Quick grab at 40,000 feet coming in over Greenland.

Just repeated my little Barra to Benbecula flight (with a bit of sightseeing on the way) and it is hugely better than I first wrote. Barra and Benbecula airports are reasonably good representations - although the Balivanish windmill is still obstructing the approach / departure of 06 / 24 at Benbecula. The islands look not too bad although Castlebay on Barra is woeful but surprisingly Lochboisdale on South Uist is recognisable, as is Daliburgh. I think maybe the water levels are a bit off as the lochans on South Uist look too extensive and several of the causeways are under water but surprised to see the missile range and its radar site included (albeit without the radome).

All-in-all I am quite hopeful for the rest once I get time to spend in the sim but I thought I ought to post this since I made a muck up of that area last night.

Is it just that the windmill models are too large because the Daliburgh ones are just as huge?
Barra was my first take off after the update and landing at Plockton, very impressed with this update.
Dingwall (Knockbain Farm) to Dornoch next.

Funny how practice makes (not quite) perfect. Done my 3rd short haul (1.5hrs) full IFR/ILS flight in the A320neo now, becoming a lot more confident handling the various instruments, FP and buttons - although it helps that many are "inoperable" so it looks worse than it is really. The only mistake I made during last night's flight was I forgot to press the APPR button so had to go around once (even that and working around the buggy USR waypoints issue is becoming easier now, though ATC got confused and told me to increase altitude to 3,000ft when I was about 500ft away from the runway); landing was a bit bumpy but no lives were lost at least.
