PvP My experience with the PvP hub - a shout out and kudos

First off, for those who don't know what this is, its a place where you can go for organized PvP fights, where those taking part agree to certain rules (or no rules if participants agree). Its something some people have been saying for a long time the PvPers should do, and it seems to be working well from what I saw. PvPers can get a real challenge fighting each other, and nobody get's ganked/griefed.

Their Discord is here: https://discord.gg/HuShrr3

The main system for battles is San Tu, their group's adopted home system.

So, i joined the Discord, said hi, and headed on down there.

Ok, so yes, the "carebear" Agony went and did some PvP. :D

First off, i'd like to say something about the tone, maturity, salt levels, and toxicty on their Discord, and i'm pleased to say that I was very pleasantly surprised. If anyone has been on the GCI Discord (ostentiably a place for the PvP experts to teach new PvPers the roles), you may have noted that its a salty hellhole, with lots of immature people, and toxic as hell. Such an evironment i've come to associate with several PvP groups (Not all! Cobra Kai are my adopted PvP group and they are really cool guys). So, the PvP Hub was overall friendly and welcoming. Yes, there were some initial digs, not surprising being a forum moderator and an outspoken PvEer, but shout out to Bazinga (admin) for keeping a lid on it. So, a couple of jerks who tried to provoke things, but it soon settled down.

On to the fights. Very simple, plenty of willing people (well, who wouldn't like the chance to kill a moderator?) :D

I had 3 fights.

First two were fairly quick, my Anaconda, which is very nice for PvE, didn't stand a chance against PvP kitted ships (although the beer i'd been drinking might have hastened my demise... pip management? What's pip management? :p). Cost me a cool 40 million, but meh, can make that back within an hour with Palin's missions.

Third fight lasted quite a while with my Bomber CM4. Partially because its small and heavily armoured, and partially i think because my opponent wasn't particularly coordinated to start with (and perhaps giving me an easy time). The mines were fun though, and more than once i crippled my own ship with them.

Two things the experience did highlight for me:

1) A PvE fitted ship is not match for a PvP fitted ship. Still, you can make a PvE ship a PvP ship if you are making a combat ship. It really highlights the problem with balance between combat ships and trade ships (for example) and despite Rinzler's video, i think FD could really do with looking at was of making non-combat ships more survivable vs combat ships.

2) My life is not compatible with PvP. Every 2 minutes i'm getting distracted and called away by kids or wife. Love them to bits, but actually getting 10 minutes straight where i can get a fight is a challenge. And sometimes, the wife calling Agony (not my real name ;)) means, come right now, not in 5 minutes when you are finished. Trying to explain to the person you are in combat against you need to break off doesn't go down well sometimes, and the alternatives - just letting go and dying, or menu exiting, are also unpallatable (menu logging is against the rules of the PvP hub by the way).

So, while it was fun, and i will now consider making a PvP capable ship for the odd battle, its not something i am likely to spend much time doing. However, i would like to thank the people there as a whole, and specifc thanks to:

Bazinga and Rinzler for setting it up (and anyone else who was involved that i'm not aware of).

Yamoto2012, UnReALnan, and willyb321 for the fights.

Finally, ill just post this announcement from ryan_m on the Discord (censored to conform to forum rules).

Great post AA. Haven't had any time recently to get into day, but I'll hopefully check them out some time over the Xmas period.

And yes, my PiP management is just as terrible as yours is.

You don't need to join the server to go there, but there is a matchmaking bot haha. Also you won't get shot at by anyone who respects the system's rules.

Does your guy have a thermometer in his mouth?

And this is the issue, because players who are PvE overlords are loosing in their cutters with medium PvP fitted kits.
It results because flying pattern of NPC is dumb and not challenging, without scaled difficulty level.

NPC behaviour should be similar to players, then in a natural way a PvE fittet ship would be not defenceless against PvP, and even not skilled PvE payer could have a good habits from combat and would be at least survive enough long to run from gank squad.

I am not saying NPC should be extremely hard.

I am saying an NPC should have a diverse difficulty level, from very easy, to very hard, and their behaviour should be similar to a player behaviour, similar from weak player to glorious pvp-master-race top tier one.
Similar enemy (NPC) behaviour would in natural way lead to similaraity in counter-builds and similar counter-player behaviours between pve and pvp.
In that situation playing with NPC would through the funny and pleasurable gameplay prepare a player to a possible encounter with other player.

Gentemen, no fighting in the war room!

Especially since i wrote a rather nice post about how nice and friendly people are over in the PvP hub.... are you trying to show that the PvPers hereabouts are a bunch of argumentative dipsticks?

Sorry AA, couldn't resist :D You love me really.

If anything, we're just proving we are consistent and indiscriminate. We don't only ridicule PvE players throwing a tantrum...

*dodges thrown shoes*

Okay, okay, I'll be nice...

It's partially NPC and partially loadout related.

Flying skills, yeah, NPCs don't do us much good. It's so goddamn painful to watch varying incarnations of NPC difficulty - like FD keep trying to balance the "Elite" enemies to the middle-of-the-road players, instead of realising you should balance middle-of-the-road ranked enemies to them. Elite should mean goddamn elite; have some pride in the namesake of your game, bois!

Loadout wise...how anyone thinks an "acceptably" engineered ship will stand up to something with more secondary rolls than under-8-year-olds at a Bieber concert...

Ofc, whether one thinks a given build will stand up to that or not will be irrelevant if it becomes physically impossible to match those standards in future. Cheers grandfathering. Quintuple facepalm, anyone?

Judging by the lack of effort and skill a player has to put in to become Elite I think the NPC mirror the ranking system quite well

That's a feedback loop, isn't it? No matter how high or low you set the NPC bar, it will eventually mirror the skill and effort required by players.

In all honesty I find it amusing for Mr Premium synth ammo gimbal lord to attempt to hijack this thread! In all honesty regarding pvp, Don't use Premium ammo. Don't use healing beams. Don't use reverb cascade. Don't use ApA's with TLB. Don't fly with crimes on. If you are in a honest 1v1 don't be a sore looser and get your friends to drop in on you. Don't station gank. And remember: It's more honorable to die in a "proper" fight than it is to Highwake!

Follow these guidelines and your foes will respect you. Don't follow them and have everyone look at you like they look at 12.5 13th and 14th legion. No Repect

I don't know man, TLB APAs are fine in my book. And if you're the one that gets hit with Reverb Torps, that's on you haha.

Torps are fun yea but in a proper wing fight they seem "Point and Click" APA's with TLB is "iffy" in my book. I just feel its cheap. But to each thier own!

Packhounds and seakers are also point and click. Those should be removed from the game completely or nurfed to oblivion. Premium packhounds are cancer.

APA TLB require skill to use, not an issue.

Premium ammo is a joke. It should be turned upside down. Highest synth level should be equal to what you get in the shop. Lower grades should be worse.

What's the problem with TLB's? Is that a condition of the hub? As far as I'm concerned they're absolutely within the bounds of PvP sportsmanship, so I don't see why they wouldn't be allowed.

Agree 100% - 'never used them against other players, 'never wanted to! I think relative noobs should have access to them but along with gimbals, they should be totally removed as an option when you reach 'Dangerous' combat rank (apart from large ships & maybe, select mediums).

I'm a casual player with a Hotas X, no macros, head tracking, voice attack etc but I only use fixed weps - if I use them in PvP, anyone can learn. It's much more about laziness imo & unfortunately Frontier pander to this prevalent disposition throughout the game.
