Newcomer / Intro My Return to ED ......

I'm happy with my Hauler. Let me potter around in MyShere. I don't need a ...... DBX is it ? Maybe I'll never leave MyShere. It gets like that sometimes ...... when you're 81. You're happy doing very little. And that is exactly how I feel at the moment. ;)

What do you think ?

I can do my best to avoid gettng scanned, but its not easy
I have no heatsink blocks, should I get some ?
Can I auto take-off and auto dock ?
How do I engage silent running ?
what is chaff ?
There is a restock option at any space station that refills all heatsinks and anything else on a ship that needs ammo. I'd avoid silent running as your shields go offline and the passenger won't pay if you get hull damage .... but then again autodock takes care of that. Restock the heatsinks and use them if you see SHIP SCAN DETECTED. If silent running is part of your strategy you might as well remove the sheilds from the ship and use the space for something else like another passenger cabin.
Also if you are allied with the controlling faction at a station you are docking at you will (most likely) never be scanned. Otherwise it's luck as to whether there will be a scan or not.

Well, my real advice is don't do passenger missions, lol. They are a pain.

Avoiding scans is hard, it requires fast entry to the station. You can't rely on autodock. You need to be able to read the radar to see if any authority ships are near the station and on your path. Heat sinks might break a scan if the ship is far away from you, but not if near. Silent running is difficult to use, drops your shields and overheats your ship and still might not help (there's a keybind for it if you really want to try it). It will NOT break a scan in progress, but it makes your ship harder to detect on sensors. They can still SEE you with their eyes though, and will still scan if close enough. Chaff does nothing for scans.

As for insurance, it's not something you take out. It's automatically provided, as long as you have at least 5% of the cost of your ship in credits. Note that the rebuy amount is listed in your right panel.

I'm not sure why you're fixated on passenger missions, but the one positive is that you will learn a lot, probably the hard way.

Mmm, interesting. I find my experiences don't really align with Codgers. I've always been able to prevent a successful scan by launching a heat sink as soon I see SHIP SCAN DETECTED pop up. I don't use silent running entering stations and I think it results in the station not being able to identify you and restricting access to services so you can only access Black Market or Interstellar Factors for paying off your own bounty.
I really don't have much hassle with passenger missions, although every activity in the game does requiring learning a technique that works for you.
The real solution to being scanned on entry to stations is being allied with the controlling faction. I've never knowingly been scanned entering a station where I am allied with the controlling faction, and interdiction attempts in mission die off as I get allied with the other factions in the area.
I've spent so much time in the Robigo, Sothis, Ceos systems I'm allied with most factions, never get scanned and never get interdicted on passenger missions now. So there is no challenge to passenger missions for me in that area.
I'm looking forward to returning to the California nebula with my Anaconda loaded with passenger cabins, shields and guns. It's hilarious, everyone is after you and you'll probably have a rich fool demanding two units of fish to make his trip more comfortable 🤣

I was hesitant about doing another passenger mission even before Codger's comment. I just thought I'd put so much effort into determining my one and only pass. mision before, I had to do at least one more. However, Codger's comment was enough to "tip me over the edge" and drop it. In the meantime anyway.

A bit more about how insurance works. In your Coriolis build of your hauler, if you look at the bottom, you can see the rebuy amount. It's actually called "insurance" on that site. This same amount will show in your right hand panel.

If your ship gets destroyed, you must rebuy it using that amount of credits. If you do not have the credits, you lose the ship and can only get a sidewinder in return. In your case it looks like around 37,096 credits.

So..don't let your credit balance fall below that. Usually I recommend having at least 3 rebuys available, just in case. Losing your ship is quite a blow. You can recover from it, of course, but it's best avoided.

Right, they 95%, I pay the 5%

At the moment I'm seeking no "alliedation" with anybody, except the group or groups in my home station. I have 5 Systems to explore, which will include all sorts of investigation of whatever groups.
Thanks.

Autodock should avoid hill damage. As has been said, if you hear SHIP SCAN DETECTED, launch a heat sink and for me this has without fail prevented a scan from competing on entry to a station.
