"New Computer Designs Announced"

Could just be cosmetic frontier store stuff to change the HUD layout of ships and hud colours.

Don't think it's a sign of spacelegs the tech expo but intrigued me though.

How'd I miss this tread yesterday? Oh well, nothing like waking up to a good rampant speculation thread![yesnod]

It does rather sound like a "HUD out of the cockpit" solution....

.... intrigued....!

This makes it sound much cooler than what I might otherwise be dreading. Not a fan of telepresence (leastwise how it was implemented), nor really holo me. Would prefer playing as my Commander more in the game, not a holograph or remote projection of them.

Anyway, this sound promising as a personal interface outside of the cockpit. :)

I would send Federal Navy gunships to check on those new computer designs, just in case.

Erm, are you sure...

Federal Navy gunships were immediately dispatched. Once located, the robot was partially destroyed from the air

However this got me thinking. Could the Duratech be from the Federal (or at least Core dynamics) design ideology; tough, hard-wearing, (loads of cables taped to insides, terrible panel fit outside, yes I'm looking at you Krait Mk II) and the Torc be from the imperial design school; beautifully formed, lightweight, (very easy to break, possibly short battery life...).

But can the market support two rival products?
I know its at least twice the effort development (particularly if supporting n not just 2) but if they are building that back into the ships HUD too, it might actually be worth it to get fully supported HUD colours or individual layouts...

I have no idea what any of this means. Or if it means something. I am just looking forward to 3.3 in q4.

Neither do i, but some folks will shout "Spaaaaceleeegs" over any old sock they stumble upon, and perhaps FD have caught up to that fact and utilize it accordingly.
If it's not spacelegs this time, people will just throw themselves at the next vague indication.
Of course, eventually it will perhaps happen, and then the same folks will confidently go "told you so".
You know how it goes.

Straight out of left field here, but wouldn't it be nice if these new wearable devices not only showed a map, but a map of the planet you are on (in the SRV) and you could mark waypoints, locations and the such ……

Yes yes, I know, it isn't very FD like but you never never know.

I've kind of been hoping for a visual grid topography overlay on the HUD for the dark side of planets and the like. Basically, so you can see the surface in the shadows with your sensors, though you don't see the actual surface there itself.

A guy can dream of awesome cool tech features like that.

Let me know when they reinvent the trackball.

For some reason this post kind of makes me want to get a hamster and make an algorithm using speed, duration, interval, time, direction, and their subsequent differences to make hamster wheel art. [downcast]

I think it's past my nap time.

So, wearable, mixed-reality computing, to be formally announced at an "expo" October. This seems full of potential for what might happen after the end of Beyond. Also, what gaming conventions or Expos are there in October? I can't think of any.

Agreed. Though it could be teasing about more than you think.

Forget the actual tech, and it being a tease for space legs, for a moment. Sirius and Achilles are two of the nastiest corporations in the ED universe. Sirius tends buyout rival companies with new tech (e.g. MetaDrive). Achilles tends to take covert military action against competitors to drive them out of systems, which in turn, is why Achilles is often stiffly resisted when they try to expand into a system (source EDRPG). Also their androids are dangerously close to sentient AI and have a tendency to go rogue and shoot "friendlies" as well as "hostiles." (again, source is EDRPG).

Now we have to separate small companies competing with these two? I sense some major conflicts and GalNet news to come (possibly even CGs and the like).

Oddly, the personal computing devices mentioned in the EDRPG sounded cool enough/functional for use with space legs. These more futuristic versions are intriguing.

First, most important question:

Can we have both!? [Yay, something (else) to spend credits on!]

Did we all miss the word, "prototype" in October? That doesn't mean we can have it, that just means they might show us one that does a pre-programmed sequence of "ooh, aah" inducing demo thingies. It seems to me the season beyond Beyond will need some stuff to lock behind a paywall of some description. Some of the ships are Horizons only, as are currently accessible planets and anything related, like engineers, thargoid and guardian structures.

If you check https://eddb.io/faction and search for just Government type "Engineer" you get 30 results, not [edit: 10 more than] the 20 we already know and love / hate. Third on the list, Captain Banner is in HIP 61061 which has no Earth-likes but it does have multiple ringed gas giants and two atmospherics. One Neon, and one Methane!

This is no ordinary Hutton run space pants odor...
This smells more like the result of jumping to a binary system...
THROUGH the companion star! [sphincter clenching moment]

We're going to need a HUD for legs. The ship and SRV HUDs are all identical. So, the TORC thing provides a HUD that works in first person VR if / when we can eventually get out of the seat for ship / station / planet surface legs and may replace some or all of the current ship HUD, or maybe just bring colour / layout options. The same thing is emulated for the monitor ofc and may include a galmap / orrery update but I'm not sure any of that is likely to be paid content. It seems more likely FDev will gate an entire planetary class like they did for Horizons.

The Duradrive sounds more like a phone / tricorder for interfacing with the terrain, al'a NMS multitool, maybe a lock pick for getting into those red and white buildings at Dav's Hope, maybe even something we could potentially hurt ourselves or others with? We'll still probably need to collect resources to upgrade them but legs is unlikely to include an SRV turret. I wonder if an SRV will be able to target and gank someone silly enough to leave their SRV and walk around on foot and, can we scoop them up and sell them to the empire?

lol, I see dead people! Hyped for legs, but after rolling, crawling comes before walking.

"Technology expo in October."

Which technology expo? I think there's no Frontier Expo this year. Maybe the release of Beyond Chapter Four in October.
