New Planet Tech is KILLER of Exploration (all terrain is tiling/repeating/not procedural/random)

Remember that ObsidianAnt tend to avoid any dramas and stuff, and is pretty positive overall. To have him make 2 relatively negative videos in a row, it's bad. It's around 20 Yamicks in the negativity scale.

I discovered Yamick just a few days ago on YouTube - but using his attitude as a scaling unit? Brilliant 👍

We should actually make this a thing. One Yamicks = one post of salt, or one open letter? Any other suggestions for the definition?

That you shouldn't land on life whenever you set down, or even one out of ten times, when you're not looking for it. And that the material and life distribution issues are interconnected to the planet tech issues.
I kinda guess that's working as intended and that there actually is life everywhere if you land in an area that has it. Especially the grassy plant are often all over the planet with patches very close together.

Whenever you see these patterns, you know you're playing Odyssey. Every planet has them. Here are some screenshots from Deciat 1:

Maybe they impress you the first time you see them. But since they are everywhere, they contribute to the sameness of Odyssey's planets. You'll get tired of them soon.
Uhm. Not sure they impress me at all. So far I just thought they are some general terrain features instead of just having a plain one-coloured space like often in Horizons.
I mean, I get what you are saying, but I can't find them annoying to be honest.

Obsidian Ant balanced the scales today actually with a video on beautiful planets in Odyssey.
But yeah, if there's something obviously negative to say, he usually says it. At least that was my impression.

I just saw that post of his in another thread a few seconds ago. He diplomatically read FD's beads in the kindest, gentlest, but most firm manner I've every heard anyone do that.

So that was a 5-Yamicks level post then?

He's basically the dad telling his child to stop f**** up. Like a dad love his child, so do OA with ED. Doesn't mean he is blind.

Yeah it was very tame, solid 5 Yamicks on the scale of negativity.

'some people are posting pictures like this [shows good looking terrain in Odyssey] and I want you to realise that these people are lying to you. This picture received a bunch of post-processing work to make it look much better than what you'd find in game. Gamma, contrast, shadows where reduced and highlights were increased. This is not what you get in game.'

You got us there.
All commanders publishing all those good looking screenshots are working for FD PR department.
Some of them were acting as a "normal" players for years, taking part in forum activities, making friends, playing ED together with other forum members, but in reality it was all just preparation for this PR campaign.

He does have one good point in the video. The planets have no rhyme or reason to them. There are mountainous areas and desserts. And there is hardly a transition between the two where they connect to each other. Plus you have features that you see from orbit and medium hight above the planet that just dissappear and are nothing but fake shadows left on the ground once you get closer. That's not good...

But even that video had some terrible pop-in even on his machine. Morphing mountains should not be a thing. This is the only allowed Morphing time.

I was looking forward to the planet tech, given the obviously glossy videos they'd shown off, which was basically a lie. I won't be getting this dlc and hope they keep this monstrosity separate from horizons

If, if we can somehow get David Braben to watch this video, come back to this thread and let us know what he thinks and will do, then we can decide whether or not to even play this game anymore.

I THINK I FIGURED IT OUT, FOLKS!
After a bunch of looking at direct Horizons/Odyssey comparisons, it finally hit me!
The textures looking like they do?
The flatness?
The repetition?

Put that together with the lack of info about the console versions?

ODYSSEY IS DESIGNED FOR XBOX 360 AND PS3

What is also a bit imersion breaking is the fact, that often the description in the system map does not fit the actual planet in my opinion.

Or does the planet look like it is a scorching 900K hot on this screenshot with the sun burning nearly in arms reach above it? :)
