New Regions – Why not use the ones already established by the exploration community?

Yes for names not numbers, yes for the names we already know as far as possible.

And if we need to subdivide some of the existing GMP regions to map onto the game play FDev have planned? Well, we've been naming the interesting bits of the map for 4 years now, I'm sure we can come up with a few more...

/signed.

But! I agree it really just needs to be an overlay and maybe a 2-part naming convention; they don't need to redraw the rectilinear puzzle-piece regions to conform. I'm now imagining a petition demanding that lines of long/lat, the equator, tropics, and prime meridian all be redrawn to conform to national boundary lines or something like that.

Signed and would like to add that Fdev should give more influence towards a passionate and involved player base rather than try and make up its own ideas of who we are as a community.

Yet another +1

Given that FDev are understandably going to be reluctant to take on new work this late in the development cycle, I would suggest that option #2 is probably the only realistic one. I would love to see the GMP region names in-game, but I'd guess that would need to wait for a later patch. (And yes, I do think its a realistic hope - after all they did solicit the community for things like the tourist beacon content.)

As for terminology, I like the sound of "sector" best (e.g. "Formidine Rift, rumour in Sector 26") but it does conflict with how Sector is currently used to name hand-placed galactic sectors. So something like Grid or Zone would do fine.
