New Regions – Why not use the ones already established by the exploration community?

A lovely idea.

Regarding suggestion 3, Adam (Woods) did say it would be toggleable on the map.

If they can't change this, I suggest option 4:

A second cosmetic overlay with the player created regions. Then have one as the Pilots Federation designations and one as GMP designations, and make the GMP in game lore.

Maybe even add that to the rumours etc:

"Commanders in the black tell of strange signals in Region 12 (PF) / The Shallows (GMP)".

EDIT: Just realised I totally miss read option 3 and it is this exact suggestion.

However,

The Perseus Crags - Region 29 - ...
The Perseus Crags - Region 30 - ...
Region 30 - The Perseus Crags - ...
Region 30 - Hyponia - ...

Doesn't need to change anything. Both are regions, just used differently. Formal vs informal. And combined, they make locations more specific.
Proposal 3 - absolutely. The GMP regions are as amorphic as a landscape (at what point does the Scutum-Sagittarii Conflux become the Circinus Transit?), while the FD proposals bring in a certain specificity.

I don't believe anyone has any problem projecting the borders of the USA eastern states over the Appalachian Mountains.

This is a very good point. We have allways purposely tried to make the regions follow the spiral structure of the Milky Way while also keeping them somewhat ambigous... E.g. who can really tell at what point does the Formidine Rift begin or end?

In any case, we have updated the OP to emphasize that the GMP team is very fond of proposal 3.

Not gonna happen. It's too late in development and would be a lot of unnecessary work for something that isn't that important. Its fine the way it is. Plus these regions are a lot easier to work with given they don't have any curves, which means I can now explore an entire block instead of having guess work with curved lines. Also the name is just fine, the order of magnitude highest to lowest is Region, Sector, Grid.

Manage some expectations though: Frontier haven't promised to adopt all of the GMP names, and there are some issues they have to deal with. I'm not saying this to disparage the GMP team's work: this was inevitable, as they had different standards to work with. Chiefly, Frontier has to consider localisation. The GMP region names use a mixture of English and Latin (and Greek, if you wish to be strict about it), and such mixtures can be problematic when it comes to translating to other languages. They're fine for the English forums, where they were originally intended for, but for game localisation, having to mark parts of names as DNT is generally something you wish to avoid.

They did say they'll consider them, so there should be at least some familiar names later. Much better than just numbered regions, after all.

Unecessary? Absolutely. Not important? I disagree. The big thing about the codex, and its underlying functionality of dilineated regions, with rumor/sighting/confirmed discoveries, plus some of the changes to the way the galaxy map and exploration system works, is that these changes bring the exploration community together and create a massive collaborative project with a sense of shared ongoing continuity.

The Codex is very much about conveying the shared accumulated data of the player community, and I can think of no better way to honor that ongoing effort than by in some way integrating the colloquial region names that our early pioneers have established, and which the community has been using for years now.

Think of the "sectors" as official regions in the same way as those used in the "shipping forecast", which are very little to do with the geography people use. After all, who knows where "Viking" is, or "Trafalgar"?

Of course, naming the sectors would be nice. Maybe a nightly galactic shipping forecast would be available to go to sleep listening to?

"Formidine Rift, force 5-6, clear, falling. Colonia, cyclonic, force 6-7, slight, becoming rough." ;)

My guess is that its a done deal, the work has been done, so i'd go with the idea of a toggleable overlay that players can switch on and off as they like.

While this implementation would probably be much easier Im not sure it is the way to go...

I tried to have a go at it myself (click image for full size):

While there is good correspondence in some areas, in other it is completely off. Also a consequence of this would be that the Conflux Abandoned Settlements are no longer located in the Conflux, and the same goes for the Formidine Rift Abandoned Settlements - since the new region borders twist in such a way that they just exactly exclude them...

Personally I think Id rather wish for the map overlay idea than twisting the existing regions into too unrecognizable shapes... Something to sleep on I guess...

Anyways, its been a long day, so Ill sign off for now.

But before I go, Id like to end the day by saying a very big thank you on behalf of myself and the GMP team to all who has chimed in on this thread so far. Your comments and support are very much appreciated.

I was thinking for instance perseus trasit could be broken into lower perseus transit, middle perseus transit, upper perseus transit.

In the same way thay the abyssal plain could be eastern abyssal plain and western abyssal plain.
