New Thargoid variant

I've just observed some unusual behavior. When I dropped in from supercruise I saw the new thargoid variant running away from palins base and it was being chased by a dozen or so scouts. I had been dropped very close to where they were approaching. The interceptor jumped away and instead of the scouts breaking off and attacking me they ignored me and all jumped out after the interceptor presumably in pursuit. Very fascinating.

This is kind of scary.
Its fascinating that this variant only appears at Palin Research Base, and always fleeing.
For me, this reinforces the possibility that it was an experiment by Palin to create a human-pilotable thargoid vessel. The thargoids must have attacked his base to get their comrade back, so the hybrid may have been accquired during the Enclave Goal. The hybrid itself must be fleeing the base where it had been imprisoned for so long.

Note: I'm not usually one to embrace wild theories, but the prospect of perhaps being able to fly a thargoid shop excites me.
Won’t fit on any landing pad, unfortunately, so that makes owning an Interceptor unlikely.

I could see this (if it does indeed turn out to be a hybrid) as being the first step to a bespoke ownable Thargoid ship with a shape that could fit on existing landing pads.

I’m still in the “this is the other species” camp, though.

So, I get there's a bit of speculation about the human fittings on it perhaps just being a bug. While typically, I'd agree and have been, thanks to CMDR Plater's video above, I got somewhat what I was after.

Things which make me think this is a legit hybrid from here are as follows. Up-front note, I'm not suggesting the PP, FSD, PD and SG presence aren't a bug, but I think it's too early to rule it out as a bug too.

  • Unknown Drives. It actually confuses me that we've so far focused on the Human fittings and the Hearts, but basically not mentioned the unknown drives. That's a pretty deliberate, addition, as we don't usually see Drives on a typical Thargoid scan.
  • Shield Generator (specifically). While the presence of a fairly-typical looking shield generator might still be part of a bug, it's state is not. Thargoid Vessels don't activate shields until a heart is exerted. In this case, the shields probably don't function like the usual shields
  • I note two "blank" fittings, so for balance, this suggests it could be a bug. For example, maybe other thargoids would have "Unknown Drives" but they're a hidden fitting, not hidden on this though.
So, that's all well and good, I haven't really proven anything with that, not that I'm out to at the moment... but referring to this good screenshot.... look very closely at the "polyps".

Most of them are characterised by cracking around them. That's usually a by-product of joining two things which, well, aren't meant to be joined together. It's unlikely Humans can graft/grow Thargoid Vessel, err, material, to create a clean "join", so to attach any human control systems they'd need to "Brute-force" it onto the rest of the ship... think of it like trying to attach something to glass with a metal screw. The regular pattern is also indicative of things needing fixing at regular, distributed points. Thargoid ships are pretty symmetrical, so pretty likely that those points would be symmetrical/regular too.

More importantly, those cracks aren't just "growth" from the "polyp", If you look real close there's no contiguity between the polyp and the cracks, they're just cracks in the Thargoid surface. The paler, more yellow aspects, and the lack of any lighting effects typical on a Thargoid's surface also suggest the surface isn't exactly "alive" like usual as well.

For me personally, this is smoking-gun stuff that this is some hybrid vessel being "secured"... but why and who, who knows.

Welcome to speculating on things ;) (not excusing it, just it's been going on since day dot, and they have a habit of not wanting to discuss anything related to this)

EDIT: Can someone do me a massive? Select those subtargets and take screenies of where the little red aiming boxes appear on the Orthrus? Might be a whack of effort, but.

Well, IF it is not a bug...

It would make sense. Why the Thargoids went back to the Pleiades and attacked specifically Palin? Thargoids don't like humans messing up with their stuff and Palin is known to mess around with them all the time. Also, this thing is appearing specifically just in the old Pallin base of all the places and it seems that nowhere else.

So, may this be some kind of experiment? what if it is some kind of "prisoner" that Pallin was holding? Or maybe a kind of recon ship?

I'm out of tinfoil, can someone lend me a hat, please?

That unknown drives thing imho points towards "not bug" as written above.
And I find the location (Palins Base after he went away) very suspicious.
I really wonder what happens on the 18th september.
Really really intrigued by it, from a safe perspective 22k ly away it will be fun to watch that happens :ROFLMAO:

Thanks, always happy to be proven wrong :)

I still stick by my claims that aren't necessarily related to the subtargets, the appearance/layout of the polyps, and the TTP of this particular variant... and the unknown drives are still distinct from "drives".

Oh I don't want to prove you wrong
I really want this to be something beyond a new Interceptor too.

I just don't to get my hopes up if it is a bug.
As you say there is more than just the subsystems anyway so hopefully even if it is just a bug or artifact of it being a similar scenario to the original Hyperdictions there are the other points you raise.

I see a Falcoun DeLacey Canopy in that screenshot.

Assuming the subsystems shown after a scan isn't a bug, then it's possible that the new "Thargoid" ship is an experimental human ship retrofitted with human systems and flown by humans.
Take an alien ship, replace or add things needed for humans and keep the unique - not understood tech - to keep the ship working. Learn everything about it and then build pure human ships with the new found knowledge.

Something like that is quite common in sci-fi. First human death gliders in SG1 for example. Even the old Elite games had such a hybrid ship.

A human build hybrid ship would explain the NO over the thargoid logo - it would be a real NO to indicate that it is not a Thargoid ship. (Red paint to cross out the logo would look cooler, but would probably be more difficult and less obvious).

We will probably get a GalNet news in 3-4 weeks about the "new" discovery - if it's not a bug.

So we have our rose ships at last!

I never shot a Thargoid hoping for some kind of peaceful interaction will eventually be possible. A hybrid build is indeed fantastic.
"Unknown drive" could be our way into witch space and granting wider range and reache throughout the galaxy?
If this is a bug, pun intended, its the best frontier had ever created lol.

Kill it! Quickly! No witnesses!
This is why we will never have peace as there will always be someone who wants to kill something they don't understand.

The pewpew brigade "apparently" started this as there was supposed to be a option for the war to go either way.

I think it's a bit early to judge this as "just another flower ship".

Anyone know why they settled on these dumb flower designs?
I always though space monsters and their ships were supposed to be
big, dreadful and scary.

These space daisies only make me laugh.

X.

It would be an interesting development if the Thargoids attacked Palin's base, to fit an FDS and dirty drives on a test ship.

Fast thargoids with super cruise ability, could be quite scary.

Why the 18th of September in particular?
