No Single Player offline Mode then?

OK, lets simplify this.

Am I right in thinking the argument is that Frontier by having a Kickstarter reward for a DRM free game is obligated to release a standalone version?

No your not...Everything in a kickstarter is a challenge and risk.....( as in "Risk and Challenges of the kickstarter ) its not set in stone and things can change throughout the development.
Kickstarters fail after funding and sometimes people get nothing....you take that risk when you pledge money..

I didn't check, since I have no interest in doing so. Maybe the mods will purge this suggestion then, but what would actually stop you from doing it? Nobody is hurt either, as long as the transaction is honest.

I believe it is also tied to an email address, and I like my email address.

calling the company guys greedy or stupid is a Swear Filter Evasion. So take care.

Not to do a Swear Filter Evasion

Or you get a warning for doing Swear Filter Evasion.

Like the company has a Truth Filter Evasion, and this one works great also..

A friend of mine has a lot to do with filters too, he is filter cleaner in a defactor. But he is a honest man doing a necessary job.

After going through the initial wanting a refund(which I probably wouldn't get) phase, I have tried to become philosophical about the whole thing.

At the end of the day....yes my faith in my long time hero has been completely shattered, but it's only a game and nobody has died.

The web seems to be full of 40 something degenerates that have nothing better to do but to foam at the mouth over something that is not as important as being a parent or going out and getting a job?

I watched a Youtube vid of a chap getting so upset that he had to medicate himself during filming.....Quite sad and really not good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhXX_NYcIH0

Obviously, but it is not a license to scam. The company is not broke, they could deliver on the pledge rewards easily. They just chose not to.

And if that happens, they must refund, or fnd an alternative way to satisfy the pledge reward, like our own servers.

If anyone can log in without authentication, then you are correct. But this is clearly not the case with Elite.

OMG are people STILL trying to say this game doesn't have DRM?! Look, it doesn't matter how much you forum vigilantes try to cause arguments over something that obviously doesn't concern you, saying that 'Filezilla connects to the internet but isn't DRM' and other such nonsense it utterly pointless.

If you have to identify yourself to do something, otherwise whatever you're trying to access will not allow you to do it AND you have to remain connected to use it, otherwise you will not be able to, AND said item does NOT REQUIRE you to actually BE online to use it UNLESS it has been deliberately coded in such a way as to require server access in order to complete certain actions, even though this isn't a necessity - That is clearly DRM.

In ED's case, it has already been proven by people that the actual game itself is quite happy to run without an internet connection - only the market data, and online MP data is needed to be communicated from servers. Converting this to offline play would be trivial, as market data would be a simple database, and you wouldn't need MP data for offline use.

Basically, the core game, the bit that is about flying around space, docking with stations, trading, and mining, are all easily done offline, there is no requirement for 'complex servers' to run all of this. Those saying the galaxy could only be possible by use of external servers running it are, sadly, either misguided or naive.

Oh, and MMO games (which Frontier is NOT one of, it is a game that happens to have some MP facility), DO require servers to run, as the servers store all the info for every shard (or island, or whatever you want to call it), including all NPC's, enemies, players, loot, everything - therefore this is required for the game to run properly.

Bottom line is, if the fact people believe this is DRM, or that they are aggrieved with the whole offline situation, that is their choice to make. It doesn't fall on forum vigilantes to 'correct the incorrect', nor to be Frontier Development's Knights in shining armour - they are quite capable of handling this themselves. People who disagree with something that doesn't actually involve them are unhelpful, and cause threads like this to expand for no useful reason.

In short, shut up and go away, because we don't need you here.

Exactly, it said DRM free. Thats all it says, whether that is online or offline, is irrelevant.

I guess its down to your interpretation of DRM Free then. If you think you can play an online game without telling the server which character you are, then good luck.

Go to any game modding site and you will see a huge amount of "Nude Chicks Mod" or "Big Mellons Mod" or "God Mode Cheats Mod".... are you really surprised that David was worried about allowing modding.

I see no issue whatsoever with perverts modding their offline games however they want, it's not like I'm going to break into their homes and watch them play.

As for online games, since mods for them would have to be centralized anyway, just enforce a moderation process, like in mobile app stores.

In any case, though, Braben seemed perfectly fine, with modding, even interested. What worried him was potential "branching":

Community/modding content is an interesting point - something I'd like to embrace, but within the game itself. There is a danger of the game branching otherwise.
(Emphasis mine.)

Children are so easy to satisfy. Getting philosophical while others take everything away from them. Or do you think its only a game, for what they betray you ?
So if one is just naive, he shouldnt call others degenerated.
And the video was ironic, you just did not understand it. So, instead of provoking, can you just shut up and going on subjugating yourself ?

We were not such washcloths tell ya. Women tell them what to do :D

You totally misunderstand the whole thing. It is not about the ingame character, it is about the serial key required to make an account, which you need to run the game. Only if anyone could make accounts without any authentication, it would be DRM free. Like free to play games for example.

You mean just like there has not been a vibrant community around the X universe games for a decade or so... oh wait, that's completely wrong.

Or around Freelancer, or around any Elder Scrolls or Fallout game, or around thousands of other offline games.

Being able to mod and customize a game, and play it however you want, is precisely one of the best tools to build a healthy and stable community, and keep a game going long after the publisher has lost interest.

People are still modding Morrowind, for [redacted]'s sake!

To be honest if it was me, I wouldn't want my game (which has a large emphasis on its graphics), being modded so the planets were turned into massive Lady-Bumps or the stations reskinned really badly... and then videos of this being spread around all over the net. Eve took the same stance with player made ship paintjobs etc.

However, I'm not sure what was meant by 'Branching'.... A lot can be done with modding... some really good stuff. But there is a lot of rubbish too.

Look.. Any kickstarter is a risk.......you pledge your money ...it gets funded....Things change in Development and on occasions people have got nothing back and had to live with it..
This isn't the case here.... Offline mode was cancelled within development ( Very late I agree ) but the product will still be delivered..
They could just have easily cancelled it last year after funding and all this would be done and dusted now..
You can only assume they tried right up to the last minute BEFORE THEY HAD TO TELL YOU...
It could have been handled sooner and much better ... But either way its what will be delivered Dec 16th..

I can say only to that Topic:

Yes, it runs bad with the Offline Mode.
Yes, it was communicated to late and in a bad Form.

But after all: didn't overreact when you really like this Game. It help us all more to discuss about possible compromises, so that at the End the most Players could have fun, even when they get not 100% that what they want.

It is a risk, not a license to scam. KS has terms, too. Advertising DRM free and then delivering Always-on DRM is not covered.

Bottom line is, if the fact people believe this is DRM.

You can believe in fairies at the bottom of your garden, it doesn't mean they are there.

I got bored of the spamming of new threads on the forum, and so started to read this thread to see what all the fuss is about.

There is an argument that people should take legal action against Frontier due to promised rewards in the kickstarter. This doesn't stand up to scrutiny, as it is based on the idea that a promise of a DRM free game equals a standalone game. It doesn't.

There is an argument that we need offline or won't be able to play this game in the future as a retro game - the existence of reverse engineered servers for discontinued MMO's means this is a bogus claim.

Beyond that I'm not seeing anything but hurt that the direction the game has taken isn't what some people wanted. It's unfortunate.
