Notice to Devs. Do or die. Exploration.

For about another 7 years, I reckon.

The "10 year plan" or "non-10 year plan" is somewhat of a moot point. It's easy to tell that Frontier at least seemed to be striving for a lot more with this game with their discussion about this game's potential and future development...

The tone isn't flying well with people, and I totally agree with that. You could say exactly the same thing, but your tone and delivery will garner vastly different reactions... but that's by the by and not really what I wanted to address.

Exploration. One of the big parts of the game. Arguably the biggest, consider that over 99% for the galaxy is yet to be explored, so I would say this was pretty stonkin' huge. Sandro has said on a previous livestream (a week or two ago) that more will be revealed about the 'improvements' plan at Frontier Expo, which is actually only a couple of weeks away. He's hinted at various things and made mention to exploration as one of the various aspects that the team is thinking about and... yes, it's being thought about seriously, just like with all of the other parts of the game that the team want to improve. Understand, though, that these thoughts and discussions internally may or may not happen so I really want to stress that part. No promises or guarantees, as many of you forumers will know by now, is an oft-used phrase of mine.

FX17 will be the place to watch for more news on the grander scale of improvements and what we'll be doing. There's a lot that the team are intending to do.

So, yes, we're aware of the issues that the exploration community currently has, or at least the more pertinent points of contention. I've been talking to a number of these folks and taking a whole bunch feedback from threads in said forum section for the design team to consider.

"Pinch of salt" should be FD's, and the forum's, motto. ;) :D

Three things to start with. If you don't do these... that's it.

1: The debeigeifacation.
2: Add reflectivity from orbit.
3: Add transparency to ice worlds and shine to metallic worlds. Along with the lighting effects.

I disagree with your priorities. Function > Form. The form looks great already but the function could be better.

I only wish we didn't have to wait for cons and expos for news.

I clicked this thread as I thought it was about Exploration, unless Im in need of more coffee it seems the op is asking for better eye candy. Personaly I would like more to do, more to find whislt out in the black not more shinny stuff to look at.

Fortunately they aren't mutually exclusive, or at least I would hope not. But in general, yes, I agree. [up]

I'm a giant astronomy nerd, but I have a layman's understanding of it. I like neat looking space pictures.

Sometimes I get a bit disappointed with the level of commitment to the spectacular-ness of space. For instance, my Commander writes in her logs that she thought W Ursae Majoris "was crap", which reflects my own real life disappointment that the stars in game weren't touching like studies of the real life stars suggest. I wanted to visit V838 Monocerotis to see what the game's thoughts on what the light echo would look like in 3303 are, but the star isn't even in the game it seems. Neither is the Pistol Star. I'm almost afraid to visit Beta Lyrae and find out it's just a couple of stars kinda close together without the accretion disk, thus ruining Chesley Bonestell's iconic painting for me forever. But it turns out by 3303 we figured out what was behind the weird minor planet behavior in the solar system, namely that terrestrial world 10 times the size of Earth we named Persephone. Dope shenanigans, developers. :D

Much of this sort of interactive (as it were) stellar (and for that matter, planetary) phenomena isn't in the game, at least not yet.

Otherwise, I'd expect these stars to be fairly well violently ripping each other apart instead of being in the peaceful, stable orbits they seem to be in...

I have looked forward to improvements, since I started. And I am pleased the developer is, once again, talking about talking about fixing Exploration.

You'll excuse me, however, if based on the most recent changes? I'll elect to believe no such thing is happening. The notion of locking HSL rearm to the bubble, and removing jump insertion from between stars, indicates there's a move to streamline and reduce the experience, not actually improve upon. What's truly disappointing is Frontier seems to listen to but-a-portion of the exploration community with apparently vastly different goals.

So I hope the feedback you're working with, isn't just the same group that pushed for the jump insertion rule changes, that planets should be hidden until scanned directly, and for people to not ever use neutrons, because it makes God angry, or something.

I genuinely hope I can be surprised. But we've heard this, so so many times, I cannot take this at face value. Sorry. It's been said just too many times. There's a ton of stuff I am looking forward to, in 2.4 and beyond. And I am very excited about that. But, exploration? is not one of them.

Hi Dale,

Please, if you could, make sure the devs see this thread, really, the first post is all that is needed, it is quite well done and well worth considering the ideas.

Thanks!

Exploration can only get better with the 2.4 improvements to core game play.

Well I could try to criticize the original post and claim it overly exaggerates the problem with Elite Dangerous.

But I have been in conversation with many Star Citizen fanbois recently, and it seems their main criticism of Elite and why they would not even try it is - you guessed it - the planets look like children's drawings.

Sour grapes about SC's flight model more likely.

Update 2.4 doesn't contain any core improvements, those are coming AFTER 2.4, sometime in 2018.

I understand your sentiment, and a part of me feels the same way for the very same reasons. Exploration has gone neglected and been downgraded for so long that it feels like Frontier simply doesn't care about it at all. That said though I do still have a glimmer of hope left in me, and that hope resides entirely with update 3.0. Several devs keep insisting that exploration will be getting developed further and that it's a priority for Frontier. So this is it, the moment is here, time to prove it with actions or forever forego all believability and trust from here on out. Explorers have waited for three years and a lot of us have stopped playing, so now is Frontier's chance to actually do what they continually say they mean to do. It's time.

We'll know for certain next year, sometime. Until then my commander's wings are mostly on sabbatical.

That's more like it Zeeman. Thanks for this. A reminder to the Dev team that not all of us are spoilt brats on this forum.

Everytime I read an OP like the one in this thread I'm reminded of something an old friend said to me: "nothing damages a cause more than arguing for it badly."

There's so much self-entitled foot stamping going on in this forum on a daily basis that I'm surprised the development team even bother coming in here anymore and that's a crying shame as there is some really good feedback in amongst some of these other, really quite hostile and outright rude threads.

I agree that exploration etc could be improved but is it so hard to remember that we're dealing with real people here? A little common courtesy (and perhaps perspective) would not only make things easier on everybody but would also make any feedback more likely to be received.

I know maybe I'm a little off-topic here but threads with tones like this one (and worse) are coming up too regularly these days and I'd like to see something done about it.

That is not entirely true. Missions are getting better.

I totally agree. Having that would be superb, not just for exploration but lots of different types of gameplay on planets with missions.

I want to thank you for replying Dale, and openly admit to everyone here that I was hammered last night. The stress that im under at the moment seems to be showing itself more and more angrily when im on the bottle. And, I am a complete tool when im drunk. I requested less morning shifts as I simply cant keep waking up at 3:30am and going until 7pm. Im too old for that jazz. I need more willpower at the moment and gotta eat during the day. So APOLIGIES TO EVERYONE. Ill try and keep in line.

No worries mate, and take care of yourself.

+1 for the very nice apology ... it's very difficult to admit you made a mistake . Really sorry to know you are under this kind of stress. If you can possibly reduce the bottle intake, and treat reaction to this thread as a warning sign for real life, then life in-game and for real will just get better and better for you :)
