Oculus pre order information

Elite are being played in the HTC Vive and Valve booth at CES, that does say something about someone playing for the same team. In my eyes. Could look bad for the potential Oculus support down the line

How so? We all know in it's current form, the Oculus software and Elite aren't working. That doesn't signal to me that Elite has abandoned a software and device that won't even be available commercially for a few months yet. Give the guys at FD a chance!

Doesn't matter to me. They can play politics all they want. The first device that is working with ED on release day (CV1 or HTC Vive), that's the one I'm buying. From the Youtube reviews I've watched, they're both great HMD's so ether one will be fine with me. Until then, I'll continue enjoying my DK2 and wait to see who will win my 600+- dollars.

Hey everyone,

With the news that Oculus are starting pre order of their consumer version tomorrow, I wanted to just make a quick post to confirm that we are still actively working with Oculus but currently the only SDK we are able to officially support is 0.6.

We wanted to make sure you had as much up to date information as possible and will let you know as soon as we have any more information.

Fly safe, Commanders!

I wish Frontier would stop manageing expectations with hints and no real commitment and just come out and tell the community what's going on with Rift support in ED. '...still activly working with Oculus' - on what exactly? Eve seems to have worked it out with Oculus (whatever 'it' actually is) Can't they just say 'Yes we are going to support the Rift but it might not be ready for CV1' or 'Rift support is dead'

All this beating about the bush is frustrating for users about to drop 500 quid on something that may or may not happen.

Being a system architect and former programmer myself, I would also really like to know more details about the nature of the problem with the API. But I do - by the same reason - understand why it may be problematic to unveil such details...

Anyway, Elite Dangerous is my reason to buy a VR HMD now. I want the one which supports E : D earlier. Due to the fact that I don't mind about the money and want to be a pioneer, I pre-ordered the Rift. As soon as FD announces which system will work first, I will smile or switch.

So, please FD... keep us update more closely!

Indeed.
I juste hope that if they do play politics with one or another, they say it clearly BEFORE any release.

Hugely disappointing. Not supporting Oculus at launch, means not supporting VR. We need to come together as a community and make it clear that this is important to us.

They probably can't because of their Graphics engine. THe cost / trouble of adapting it to work is most likely way beyond what they calculate to recoup because of it.

of course, they better hope that VR doesn't become some kind of standard. Or that calculation is going to feel pretty silly.

I think that's pretty disingenuous considering the fact that they didn't have to give us VR at all during the DK1 / DK2 phase. Give them more credit and let them make a statement when they're ready.

I also think that it is a complex and tough task to adopt the Cobra engine to an API which has been developed by Oculus over the last years. Despite that I know how difficult it is to develop a standard with multiple software partners (like Oculus does) or to adopt a new standard in a well and long developed systems (like FD has to). And there is the political issue that Oculus and all the others now need to implement the VR standard in the market.

This is why I do not think that there will be an open discussion and I deem mobilizing a community won't bring us - the consumers - much further. But I would change my mind according to what FD says, because it's their game which has the higher reputation or worth for me than HMD A or B.

I would buy the system they support first... what might support FD in negotiations with the API providers.

The arcade shooter EVE Valkyrie will be fun for a few days. Then people will ask themselves on what they've spent so much money. Elite or FD, thats a universe... ;-)

It's good to remember that Mr Braben stated that he wants the game to support emerging technology and hardware for longevity. As such it would make sense for FD to invest in adapting the engine to upcoming rendering standards - including the new DX and the VR equivalent APIs.

Might take a year or two - for example at the next expansion pack, but they will eventually get there, especially if he want the 5-10 years longevity that was stated before.

I still randomly get unbearable judder in the DK2 no matter what configuration I use :(

Windows 7, Windows 10, same result in Elite - utterly random judder which makes it unplayable.

It's not like my rig is weak either.

Sure, they can fix it when they are ready in a year (or two?), but Elite may be irrelevant by then. Most VR users were on board to buy Horizons, but when they can't use their equipment with it, it doesn't make any sense. Huge missed opportunity. I'm very glad I waited, as my $60 can go to whomever does produce space sim VR. It's too late to get back my money for ED, which I can't get working properly (some folks have had luck using SteamVR).

But none of this matters any more. The life of games these days is maybe a few years at best, and most DK1/DK2 users have gone without for a while. Enthusiasm only lasts so long. I've seen others posting about SC and EVE in here, the market is shifting and adapting as markets do. New products come out and folks can vote with their feet.

Best wishes to everyone, we will all be playing in VR somehow!

Personally I am not giving up on ED so soon. With official vive support right now and hacky dk2 and even cv1 support right now I am still fully banking on playing in vr day one on my cv1 arrival. If this is not going to happen I am trusting FD to keep us in the loop so I can cancel my cv1.

Unlike you sadly not ofmthe other space games good as I am hoping they will be (I am getting them all) none of them are Elite

I really hope FD is concentrating all efforts on making the game work for CV1. After looking at the oculus price, with all the tech behind the Vive and coming from a company that will not sell it without making profit and hearing HTC talking about the vive as an investment is safe to say that the Vive will be as minimum $800 to $1200, thats when everybody will be ordering the oculus.

Not a truer word spoken +1,come on FD pull the rabbit out the hat and sort out all the dout and speculation once and for all preferably before March for everyone who ordered first I've got till June

I don't think they are all the sudden going to make that statement as they have made the statement they are going to make at the beginning of this thread. That's the statement that kept me from ordering and I really think there are going to be some disappointed people as I know whatever I end up spending for my next VR I do not intend to be doing all this tweaking and constant fixing like the last year and a half. I wish all of you purchasers the best of luck on this but I just unfortunately feel you guys are going to continue the tradition of finding fixes for what is supposed to be a true consumer version.

I preordered an Oculus Rift CV1 which will be delivered in March/April. My feeling is that Frontier is pushing more the HTC Vive then the Oculus, but without making an official statement. The Oculus is with $599.- everything else then cheap, but I am guessing that the HTC Vive (with the controllers) will be even more expensive. Really would appreciate, if Frontier could give us a hint, if we preordered the wrong VR to play this amazing game. Or if they are working on the adaptation of HTC Vive AND Oculus Rift, so that they could be ready sometimes in Q2 (or later).

With Eve Valkyre and Star Citizen two aditional space sims are on their way, which are both focussing on PVP. Fontier always has its head-start in this genre, but this competition between these games will push Frontier hopefully into the right direction. Anyhow - in April I will play VR space games - Elite or Eve Valkyre (or even Star Citizen).

Same situation here, ordered a CV1 and am excited to say the least.

However I hope FD say 'yea' or 'nay' prior to Oculus starting to ship them as if the CV1 wont work with ED then ill be tempted to cancel. Be gutted to cancel but not sure Valkyre alone would be a reason to spend the £530 right now... did also kickstart back Desent Underground which might be fun.

Quietly confident that FD will make some form of announcment over the coming 6 weeks... lets be honest, if Frontier dont support CV1 then a lot of us will be dissapointed and I for one, have more faith in Frontier. Why would they not support CV1, just doesn't make sense for them not to?

Exactly. Valkyre is a PVP space shooter and will get old in about 3 days. Zero depth to that and absolutely not worth coughing up $599 for it, sorry. And Star Citizen? Don't hold your breath on that one. At the rate that is going it's going to take another 2 years.
