Oculus pre order information

Hello,
I have gtx 980 SLI, will work in the Elite Dangerous Horizonts in Oculus? I play only this game. Now it works perfectly in the game.

PS sry for my English

The Rift does not support sli. Oculus have said this many times. Future multi card VR APIs from nvidia and AMD need to be implemented by developers into their own game engines to give any benefits to those with multiple cards.

I have to say that I am somewhat confused.. I am using my DK2 in direct mode via steamVR.. works without any problems...

It's working because steamVR currently supports extended mode. They are expected to drop this support in the future at which time Elite will cease to work unless the developers adapt the game engine to support direct mode rendering. Not certain but id imagine the same issue will exist with the Vive headset once extended mode is dropped.

SLI can work right now with the Rift, but it will always be the case that SLI support needs to be implemented by each developer. In other words, don't bet on it except for the most hardcore of hardcore VR titles.

I am running ED:H flawlessly on one 980ti 1080p x2.0 75fps on WIN10 with runtime 0.8 in direct mode with mirrored monitor all settings high or ultra.. I can't seem to wipe the smile off my face :) what's the problem?

Nice rant. Makes you seem a lot younger than someone who played the original games.

FD have said they are committed to supporting VR and all the headsets, yet all some people see everywhere is conspiracy. FD have no vested interest in what’s the best headset, only that they have support for all of them so they can appear to the widest possible audience of potential players. They have also said that the reason they don’t support the latest firmware and why they might not support CV1 is because of technical reasons. Again the conspiracy is FD are secretly withholding the update just because they are evil and like doing that sort of thing. The reality is they are working with Oculus to resolve the issue. Since FD haven’t come out and said directly what the issue is, it’s likely to be an Oculus problem and FD are not in the business of pointing the blame at others.

Its highly likely that whatever the fix is, it needs to come from Oculus. And since they are busy with the release of their hardware, FD can’t guarantee when the problem will be fixed.

This reminds me of the AMD SC issue that was around for quite a while, everyone was saying that it was up to Frontier to get it fixed, but the reality of the situation is that things like this are out of Frontier's hands for the most part. If you are waiting for a third party to get something fixed there isn't much that can be done.

The Rift (along with all other current VR solutions) WILL have issues with ED and any other game that says it 'supports' it. What seems to have happened here is that Frontier (quite rightly so) are stepping back and saying 'hold on, we cannot guarantee this is going to work'. In the end these pieces of hardware are first gen so there are going to be issues when you consider the software is also first gen.

Don't like it? Then don't be any early adopter of hardware, because this will always be the case regardless. Come back in a couple of years when the standards and hardware for VR make more sense, the Frontier will officially support it.

Would people prefer the Frontier just said its going to work, and then people spend £500 on kit to find it doesn't? They are protecting themselves and quite rightly so.

What do you reckon - slightly less nuanced interpretation of the existing "we're working on it" message, or news?

It's not news. Just the usual journo nonsense. At no point does the FD statement say "we are not/will not support Oculus" and in fact it says "and we're still working with Oculus on Rift support."

EDIT: this just kills me...from the Eurogamer article: "Eurogamer was tipped off to a potential drop of support for Oculus Rift by a source who pointed to the lack of mention of the headset on the Elite: Dangerous store.". Are you kidding me? Tipped off? A source? Anyone one of us can go to the website and see that for ourselves.

tho it still has the tag line that steamVR is their focus at the moment.......... either someone is lying through their teeth (would not be the 1st time a journo has done this I guess) or someone at FD has accidentally let a cat out of the bag they were not meant to and now everyone else is trying to do damage limitations.

either way I need to step back a bit as i am becoming one of those ranty youtube types which is not attractive no matter how you look at it ;)

Hype, Hype, and more Hype. Who cares keep your DK2 and enjoy while it works itself out which it will. This game is too awesome to not have the support of both VR sets. Who is going to be first? Probably Vive but I am sure Oculus will follow close behind. I know I am enjoying my DK2 right now very much so and like mom always said patience is a virtue, thanks mom. :)

That's fine but some of us screwed up and sold the rift after it corrupted our windows 10 install :(

This message contains one thing which is new and make the difference to me: That FD focuses on or prioritizes SteamVR.

I have been waiting for a clear message regarding this preference in order to make my decision for Oculus or the Vive. For me it's not about the money. This message shows that FD has better support or a more flexible technological foundation for integrating into SteamVR.

After 3 years of fun with DK1 and DK2 I have canceled my pre-order. I thank FD for this info, though it has been only a slight hint regarding the whole thing, which may be going on there.

I'll be waiting patiently and curiously how this develops... on Rift runtime 0.6 somewhere around Sagittarius A.

I agree with Rhombus: one thing is "focusing", another thing is "keep working".

I'm back at square one: what I should do about my preorder ? What if the Vive will cost too much ? What if I would get an Oculus before a Vive but support for Elite first on Vive and then on Oculus ? What if I keep the Oculus but then I will have troubles with ED ?

Ah the problems in my life :)

Don't worry you are not alone - all of us who pre-ordered are in the same boat. I'm quite glad my expected shipping date is not until May - I would be quite happy if it was June. I actually hope it doesn't get brought forward. I am quietly confident that support will happen (reassured by the comments from ghcannon and posts like this), it's just a question of when. The "focus on SteamVR" thing is the only thing that is troubling, especially as it does seem to be a genuine statement from FD. Poorly worded or very carefully worded? Hmmm...

If we get to the end of April and we haven't had anything concrete from FD I will start panicking then :) I'm hoping that Oculus will have a decent 28 day no quibble return policy just in case. In the unlikely event that support never happens then the Rift will go on fleabay even if I take a loss otherwise it will become an expensive paperweight.

See you in the Rift ;)

I have canceled my pre-order for a simple reason: I now don't want to bet 720 EUR on Oculus to provide a working support for Elite Dangerous on day one of shipment. In case there is trouble, I don't want to sit on a Rift CV1, hoping things will turn out well... or struggle to return it... or to sell it at a reasonable price on eBay. So, no matter if the Rift or the Vive will be the better solution... I will buy the better one according to its technical support for Elite Dangerous and not be one of the first players with that piece of tech.
If this will be the Rift in the end - so be it. If this will be the Vive - I'll wait for the price and buy that anyway, I guess ;-)) ... but not having already bought a not satisfying CV1.

The most consumer products aren't half as public as oculus has been during product development. which is why its weird when they fall back to industry standard procedures.
