Oculus Quest 2 for Elite Dangerous

I have a suggestion, hopefully the mods are listening.

Can we please put the issues regarding requiring a facebook login into a different thread and leave this one for a technical discussion?

I can see where you are coming from, but surely Oculus requiring a facebook login is essential information, I mean a person could read this thread, rush out and by the Oculus due to the good reviews and only then find out he is required to use a facebook login, and while that's not a problem for some people it is certainly a deterniner as to whether or not I will buy a certain device, so I don't see seperating it out as a good move.

I am not THAT impressed with my Quest 2 link and Elite. Even with the bitrate up at maximum. It's good but it's not the jump I was hoping for. Maybe I need a new gfx card as well (currently on a 1080).

No problem. I was thinking about that myself when I was having so much trouble trying to launch ED. The key was to launch steam vr first.
Got it working so thanks again. A little support really helped, I had previously uninstalled the Oculus version and installed the Steam only but it would not launch. I thought I had tried every variation possible and just gave up. Then I saw your success and answering those questions helped re-ignite the chase. On another forum for another game someone said to kill all Oculus processes in Task Manager - so I also did that.

Just ordered a new WAN Wifi 6 router as when I sit directly infront of my Virgin Hub the game play is significantly smoother than when I am upstairs in my games room. Fingers crossed this will give a similar if not better performance.

Thanks again, VD is significantly better than link cable and makes all games far more engaging.

I hear you. Right now the way the link looks and performs it's unusable. What version of Oculus home are you running? Apparently link will be out of beta with V23 and is supposed to have support for 90mhz and something like 500 mbps bitrate.
Either way when I tried it with V21 it looked so bad I was prompted me to spend the $20 and get Virtual Desktop. Its not perfect but looks and performs light years ahead of link.

VD also has settings for color vibrance, video nominal range and gamma that really makes ED image pop. I think the lcd display in the Q2 has a lot of potential.

Potential jailbreak for the Quest 2 to bypass a facebook login requirement.

The video also mentions, right after the Q2 talks, a potential new VR headset called the DecaGear which Valve has confirmed they helped with steam integration or whatnot.

@Space Dandy I'm getting so angry having to sift through all of the freaking comments just so I can see how to enable hand capabilities.

Can someone direct me to an information source that is actually USABLE? A google search comes up with this post every time, but the information im looking for is NOT FREAKING HERE.
What is going on here. How do I link my quest 2 to elite dangerous, do I have to use my keyboard? and if I have to use my keyboard and mouse, why is it so hard to set up and find decent information about it.

Ok I got some of the functionality to work. This is really janky though. I'm a fairly good typer but it just seems really counter-intuitive to have the default settings be so messed up. First I have to use the keyboard to start the game, it doesn't even start in fullscreen mode so half the time my inputs are selecting things on my desktop, and the other half of of the time I miraculously get to use the actual inputs on the controllers INSTEAD of my keyboard.

Come on guys, this is so messed up for someone to have to sift through. Don't get me wrong the immersion is amazing and once I got the ship stuff down that was cool. But 1) I don't want to have inverted controls and it doesn't look like I'm actually able to change it. 2) Key functions like the hyperjump system require I find ODD things on my keyboard like J (come on, who knows intuitively where J is on there keyboard in a setting where they can't even see their freaking hands) 3) I will give it credit for being better than no-mans-sky flying system, but any help would be greatly appreciated seeing as this is my first time playing this game on PC and I desperately want to be a PVP GOD

all that being said I actually am now getting used to typing without any possible sight of my keyboard and it is a way different experience! i love it!

I don't have a Q2 so can't help but I was under the impression most VR users simply used their standard Hotas etc? As for the hand tracking I think if the Quest controllers are not detected it automatically goes to hand tracking?

Enable hand tracking on the device
Users must enable the hand tracking feature on their Oculus Quest to use their hands in the virtual environment.

  1. On Oculus Quest, go to Settings > Device.
  2. Enable Hand Tracking by sliding the toggle button.
  3. Enable Auto Enable Hands or Controllers by sliding the toggle button, if you want to automatically switch between hands and controllers.

Personally after trying Elite for about a week with keyboard and mouse I bought a Thrustmaster Hotas set up. I am sure there is someone using VR with keyboard and mouse but most of us - the other 90% - use a Hotas setup.

Since the Q2 is out now can anyone offer which settings i should be running on the quest and on Elite. 72Hz, 80 or 90 Hz plus what resolution for best picture and do i have to change my graphics settings in game also. I normally just have them on ultra. Do i need to change it to HMD ultra?

That may be a good place to start, but it might be worth downloading Dr Kai's ED Profiler tool if you haven't already got it, makes tweaking settings a breeze.

On the Rift-S, on a 2080Super I run everything at VR Ultra and HMD Image quality at 1.75 (with Super Sampling at 0.75) - with the Q2 this just collapsed and was a stuttery mess with the image resolution slider in the Oculus software ramped up, so I dialled the HMD down to 1.00 and SS to 1.0 and everything ran smooth without touching the VR Ultra settings, although the GPU was def working harder than it did on the Rift-S.

This was using the Link cable, I want to try it using VD, but I haven't found a way to do this using the FD installer, doesn't seem to want to fire up in the Q2 headset. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. :)

Great thanks, I'll dl today and see what I can get out of the Q2. Am I expecting too much though, just want crisp clear graphics.

I think you'll be happy, the graphics are clearer than the Index, tho' the FOV is slightly less - I own both and absolutely love the Index for the superior sound, higher FOV, 120 Hz and non invasive Facebook thingy, but if I want to watch a movie (or Star Trek Discovery) on a giant screen, I'll always pick the Quest 2.

Can I use Q2 with EGS version of ED?

I have been trying various things all afternoon and cannot get it to work...

There are some who say they are able to launch the game in VR from the EGS launcher, but I can't tell if they're using the Oculus Quest 2 ...
