Odyssey as pc only.

Odyssey as we know tends to take more PC resources than horizons. To subvert the fact that even brand new console hardware is much weaker than new PC hardware I say fdev should just say "console development is a no go, hardware on consoles is not at the level to support odyssey" Anyone can buy/ build a PC, esoecially as hardware gets more available and less expensive. A PC also opens the world of modding to the user (not in elite but other games), free multiplayer, upgradability, much more customization, higher performance, and just an overall drastically better experience. Many games are PC only, if u wanna play odyssey a PC is your ticket, otherwise you console players can still play horizons.

Id imagine one announcement of ''Its coming to the new generation but not the old'' would be alot better for the company than multiple announcements re each generation.
Annoying but lets be real, 2021 was a bad year for FDev in which the company lost value.

Im sure the new gen handle Odyssey.

That's my theory. Last gen isn't going to happen, but current gen should be possible when you look at what PC hardware Odyssey can run ok.

thats pretty iffy. A lot of what we have decided is 'passable' for odyssey would not pass the QC for consuls. It has to do more than just work for it to be cleared

If Fdev keeps improving it then I can see it getting to a point for current gen but we are still a ways off

True, but the newer gen consoles, excepting the One S have decent graphics cards.

The One S might hold things back though.

Id still like to suggest planet surfaces are a deal breaker for consoles. Eg, while there are permutations on pc that can make planet surfaces look the best for the new iteration, all the performant options make them look like the sand in an hourglass with added shimmering from movement. No human who was taking elite seriously could pass those poor forms as valid. It would be a joke. Hopefully they can work though that a bit more.

I definitely do, i think elite is great. If i didn't id just go around disrupting discussion that hopes to improve it and driving away honest people with a genuine concern so the playerbase gets smaller.
No... You'd never do anything like that, would you?

No discussion here will ever improve the game, only Fdev's decisions will, and they appear to have retreated behind their wall of silence once more.

The suggestion premise of this discussion isn't to improve the game - but surmising that consoles be abandoned (something I think is likely also) as EDO is not going to run on last generation hardware (when EDH does, just, but not at optimal performance) and as Frontier have already announced they have no plans to develop ED for new generation consoles... (and, of course, Sony are now making more PS4 due to shortages of components for PS5 - which is damning in itself)

As it currently stands, the whole of EDO is a 'deal breaker' for consoles, not just planetary surfaces... But you are, naturally, entitled to you opinion, as am I, surely?

I think EDO is great, having only played the expansion since it was released, but I don't take playing any game seriously...

So as a console player I agree , I bought a series X because I don't think Fdev can optimise to the last gen . I would be disappointed but not surprised if EDO was PC only .
If I was to upgrade to a PC EDO wouldn't be on my buy list to be honest ( even after all the years I've played Elite )
It would be nice to be told sooner than later but I also understand that with the disappointing results so far that they would want to keep Sturm for a bit .

Nicely summarised!

Currently EDO on PC is still seriously lacking in optimisation, even though I can get 60 FPS in 4K everywhere now, and play in VR on my Index at 90 FPS.

The damning thing is that I only have these stunning results after buying a 6900XT... Quite 'cheap' at £1200... Untill the chip production recovers to pre-COVID levels, we, the consumers, are going to pay premium prices for recent tech, making the switch from 'cheap' consoles to PC prohibitive for some.

Will Frontier finally manage to optimise EDO well enough to work on older hardware, and finally merge the EDH / EDO codebase? I don't know, but even my normally light-hearted approach to the issues is less humourous and more along the lines of "not going to happen" as, following 9 'performance' updates little has changed, the first 3 should have made significant performance increases, with diminishing returns following.

I often think about what I'd do if I was a console Elite player. Suppose you could buy a new PC, but there'd be absolutely no way I'd buy a new PC just for EDO - it would be for other games, and those other games would probably what I'd be spending my time with instead.

I'm mostly enjoying EDO now, as performance has improved (a strong word but technically correct) to the extent that it's not a stuttery, janky mess everywhere anymore. It's like that only in specific places now, and the buttery smooth no-hiccups experience I have in Horizons is still awol after 9+ patches. But while I'm playing EDO, the gameplay related shortcomings take the limelight instead, and again if I'd ask myself would I buy a PC to play this even if it ran perfectly, the answer would still be no.

I've gotten into a somewhat unhealthy obsession to upgrade my personal equipment, but already know there's barely anything to use it for that I can't already do now once I'm done, and since EDO added nothing to the spaceship part of the game (apart from planet tech, and you will eventually get that for free with Horizons only) there's very little meat on the bone. So without further content being added it's still difficult to recommend beyond the fact it extends the size of the sandbox a little.

I also believe that the ongoing silence from FDev could be due to imminent bad news i.e. the console versions getting the chop or a further but much longer delay with a view on current gen versions.

What I actually find more interesting is when/if FDev decide to merge the Horizons/Odyssey clients. That'll ruffle some feathers whenever it happens, especially if future performance improvements remain as marginal as they've been over the past half a year.

Can't be an easy decision if they ever go there, considering all the lost sales and ongoing shortage of next gen consoles (or has that eased, I haven't really been following console markets).

Sadly my unplayed backlog is so great if i didn't seriously enjoy the game it would be a waste playing. Also about 5 years too late to make the gamer at 1984 generation.

The other thing about taking the same seriously is you can dismiss things that are obviously unrealistic, but might still have something to add to grow the discussion.

To the topic, in a corporate sense i don't think "giving up" on consoles is an option. Frontier don't like admitting weakness even at a superficial level, so giving up and conceding they are not able to perform their core function won't be happening unless they're in extreme distress.
