I was beginning to wonder where my weekly response to console launch plans was coming this week 🥺
I do absolutely still hear your concerns and worries over this, but the only thing I can suggest is...keep hanging on to what we've updated you with so far and trust that the absolute truths on any plans will always come from us as...well...a verified source. Even if plans change or go ahead with roaring success, the facts will sprout always from us as the confirmation and never the speculation.

Right now, as I've said through all of the previous weeks on this:

"Ultimately, we believe it is right to focus our efforts on the core Elite Dangerous Odyssey experience for the platforms that we have released on, before opening up to more. We know that the work that we do to improve players’ experiences of Elite Dangerous Odyssey on PC will benefit other platforms in the future, but the dates and details of the console platforms are going to change. We do not want to rush into confirming any dates or changes this has on our console release, as we must remain fully focused on the core Elite experience. Only when we feel that the foundation of the PC release is solid, will we be able to re-lay our console roadmap on top." David Braben, Odyssey going forwards.

We still have...well...I won't lie - much to do to get Odyssey "solid", as David says there - and therefore we're cracking on with it until we're in a position to move forward.
This above statement still remains, because we haven't had any indication anywhere, across all departments and teams, that it's under major threat. Any news further will always come from us when we have it. Sorry it's not more for you.
I've read some of your responses on this thread and i understand your frustration with the community. Were just afraid of being dropped. I appreciate you speaking with us even if you arent able to offer any new information because the simple act of doing so is a gesture we arent being forgotten. I hope you have a good day and hopefully you wont get as frustrated knowing we are comming from a place of fear and insecurity.

I would expect early 2022. Around Christmas 2021 at the very earliest if they really push hard.

Depend on who you ask. The co-creator of Elite have some spicy opinion on that one. Google Ian Bell for more, if you want to know more.

Irrelevant. He couldn't anyway. Even if he tried to (and he is smarter than that). To have a game/DLC/update on a console, you NEED to have sony and m$ to agree to release it on said console. It's the certification process. In its current state, Odyssey would NEVER pass cert. Period.

They might not care much about bugs, but they care a lot about performances issues.

Time flies, huh ?

As for console being too old, may I remind you that this (red dead redemption 2):

And this (kingdom come deliverance):

run on the previous gen console.

But this can't :

Go figure.

Odyssey graphisms are very well in the range of what those consoles can show properly. The lack of optimisation is entirely unrelated to that. The fact you need a 2000 series to NOT have trash FPS in a CZ, and a 3000series to have relatively decent FPS is quite an indication of the problem.
I think this everytime someone starts talking about how consoles would explode if they tried to play odyssey. We have loads of open world FPS games much more graphically detailed than Odyssey.

Off topic I've been considering playing Kingdom Come. Is it good? I've heard it's very historically accurate.

Well, I play only PC, but it's very realistic for sure, and very pretty. Like realistic pretty ? Some places made me think "hey I've been in similar places IRL".The stories are good, very realistic and medieval and stuff. Characters are all interesting.
Combat is weird ? It's made for 1v1 and it does that quite good, but a lot of fight involves multiple opponents, which make it harder.
And many fights you simply don't do, because you'd get your bottom kicked.

Also, it can get a bit annoying at times, with the whole "can't save without alcohol". Having to sleep and wash yourself is not annoying, and I found it rather good ? Like I used to take a room in an inn everytime I went to a city, to sleep for the night after the travelling.

Overall it's a good game, no argument. But it's quite realistic and immersive, and "slow". If you are into "action now", then yeah, not going to like that one.

But yeah, it's super duper realistic. You have all the medieval stuff and you see they worked on it. Even stuff like regular people can't hunt, so it's illegal even for you (hunted meat is considered "stolen"). Or you need a torch at night, because it's the law.

Off topic I've been considering playing Kingdom Come. Is it good? I've heard it's very historically accurate.
I played it on PS4, and really liked it. It's had patches since now too, so should be more stable.

If you go into it as a typical RPG game like Skyrim, some mechanisms will seem odd. But if you just role-play the character form their point it makes more sense: you start off just above peasant level, and are weak and ignored and cant do much, do there's options to really grow in the game, so does a take on the hero's journey in a most excellent way.

Not for everyone, great for those that can "get it". Vastly different in approach to Elite ;)

IMO by the time they figure out Odyssey for console they might as well focus there efforts in just making a Elite Dangerous 2 that comes with, “ Out of the Box Space legs for PC “ and migrate it to next generation consoles. I love horizons however if Odyssey is that much of a <mess> on PC would it even be enjoyable on Consoles. Probably not, I’m not saying they shouldn’t go through with odyssey for consoles but realistically for the date of the game and the price they are paying for it. It would probably be better managed with an entire updated and new game. If they can’t figure out Odyssey for console then don’t add it. I rather play Horizons at a locked game that works than a broken game completely. Lastly if Odyssey does see the light of day on Consoles for the love of god let testers in at alpha without having to pre-order so you get quality information regarding stability/bugs. Even if it’s done on a lotto basis type arrangement where people actually apply to test. Otherwise this all seems like a Gong Show. Just saying.

This is part of the problem.
It isn't.
It has a few bugs (though.... I don't encounter many/any in a standard session. Think I saw an NPC standing on a box once. And an occasional texture pop on glide.) but both I and the vast majority of those I enjoy gaming in elite with are having a great time.

By comparison to some of its peers, it actually isn't bad at all.

I acknowledge that some people appear to be having issues, however your descriptor of the state it is in just isn't true.

Odyssey is really VERY good fun and I really wouldn't want to step back into Horizons now having played it.

Thank you at least for giving an honest gameplay version of what it’s like on PC because I haven’t bought it on PC and I am waiting for a console version. With that being said though it’s hard to gather what the gameplay is actually like from just reading the forums because most the time we only see the bad end and not a positive outlook. So I apologize if my version isn’t accurate.

I still am looking forward to playing it on the XboxSS, However I still think that a good way to get people motivated at it would be to let at least some of us in to different stages of development without having to preorder the DLC. Of course that is when they are ready and are at that point of actually seeing the game move to consoles.

Again thanks for at least clearing the air on the negative and leaving us some hope that Odyssey is a positive thing to look forward to!

Well EDO is in much better shape now than what it was at launch.
There are no game breaking bugs (or none that i managed to find), but the performance is lacking, lighting is lacking - so no, it's not yet Console material.

Well at least it’s still in the works, and I am grateful they are not rushing it to consoles. My biggest goal when odyssey does launch though is wander around some of those tourist trap stations in the Gardens if that is even possible. And watch ships land. If it is not possible hopefully it would be in a future update. The Size of those stations has me very interested in a exploring within those. I do think however stations themselves are currently limited.

the second item on my list is getting up close to a lot of the planets. Particularly with cloud formations on Gas giants I find that extremely interesting on how they will animate them. Also planet exploration on foot itself will make me put a ton of time investment in the game just for the scale of such a game. I guess I am more simple to amuse in a way without needing any particular goal to achieve lol.

No problem at all.

Suffice to say, there are some excellent new features. Scavenging the bases, covert missions, the new POI on planets with downed eagles and enemies starting to loot them and some poor pilot running away who would have been saved if I hadn't got trigger happy thinking he was an enemy.

The sunrises and sunsets on newly accessible planets. Footprints in the sand whilst hiking over dunes looking for biologicals.

I actually like the new interface too for stations.

Multicrew is a big step up in terms of matchmaking, plus being able to have a friends take one of my SRV's out with me when we raid a base.

Love the taxi.

Things I wish were better? Canyons need a little love for the racing. The on foot interface for the ship desk selecting your ship. My 'locker' of weapons and inventory could do with a pass to make it feel like a kit locker a bit more.

None of them are horror shows, but 'I wish' items.

I'm one of the lucky ones that gets decent frame rates and good visuals, so I can't really comment on that but on both the i5 9600k with a 3080 and an i7 7700k with a 1080 card I find it eminently playable (and beautiful) at 4k and 1440p respectively.

Occasional glitch with the NPC's but nothing bad.

Occasional texture pop when gliding down to a planet but once again, no drama, I just want to get to the destination.

The assassination mission bug where the target wasn't able to be located appears to have stopped, too.

All in all, the positives FAR outweigh the small problems.

It’s tempting to play PC but I do not like mouse and keyboard with the game and if I am going to use a game pad I might as well play on console.

I am kinda hoping they have made engineering a little easier as well. It just so daunting to get it all done on horizons like passing through a brick wall Lol.

anyhow it’s great to hear they have made that much progress thanks for all the detailed info!

Hows the grind for level 5 gear? Module transfer yet?

Do you like space legs off planets (stations, ships, etc)?

Is the plant scanning enjoyable?

My issue(s) with Odyssey are more around the game design, and integration with the whole. Plus the whole "will it run on last gen consoles..." thing.

Not found it a "grind" at all.
I hunted around for some decent G3 bits of kit...
Then did loads of missions and hunted down some offline settlements of the right kind of system state/industry to grab a few more.

By simply playing the game a bit I got enough to get my aphelion, dominator, maverick, pistol and sniper rifle up to g5.... (though, to be honest, wasn't necessary, even at g4 I was striding around like the Terminator). Got some night vision, increased ammunition count etc to boot.

Could I have TURNED it into a grind? Possibly, but the same is true with the ship upgrades. I was surprised at how much "stuff" I collected whilst looting bases during missions. The bar tender was able to trade up for a lot of it. Found a couple of really good sites with crashed satellites containing a stack of data I needed too....

Space legs off planets is good. Seeing my ship from the outside, catching up with wingmates at the bar. It's "dead time" - so really, doesn't matter one way or another. Certainly, on the planetary cities and some of the oldskool bases it's quite fun on foot.

Planet scanning? Not really noticed. Did it, found stuff, did it some more. I DO like the additional challenge of having to hunt down the biologicals, though they're so plentiful that it isn't as harsh as it could be. Wasn't a fan of the handwavium "it's THERE exactly" model from previous.

They improved it for sure, but the core issues are still there.
The optimization is still left as is. The gameplay loop are ultra grindy and feel like they tried to hide the lack of content by making it harder to do it.

Quite frankly, even if it was perfectly optimized and fixed, I would have a hard time to justify the 40$ price. The FPS part is a discount Planetside, and you can have tons of them on steam without even searching. Concourse are literally all the same. And the bar the poster above me mentioned is full of static NPCs telling the same stories over and over, while you can't do anything in it.
Concourse are glorified station menu.

The entire DLC feels like they try to make it look more than it actually was. We have concourses to act as if we have more than a station menu. We have massive grind for engineering so we don't see there is little to do. We have the scanner painting the entire planet blue, even though the plant is only in mountains or something, just so we spent more time looking for it.

Now, one might say "yes but it's an addition to a game that already have much to do". Which would be true if we had any links between EDO and EDH. But the only (tiny) link we had was nuking NPCs from a spaceship, and they added rocket launchers to NPCs to prevent just that.
Right now, you can play Odyssey without using your ship AT ALL. It's entirely another game you access through a module (automatically replace the landing Horizon one) and a button (disembark).

Well, basically that's what i said too. No more game breaking bugs, still not optimized.

As far as visuals - Concourse does look the same. But so it does every other station out there. Same station interior based on its economy type
I dont really mind that. Maybe because i dont expect anything else in the first place

Game loops are not that many for EDO - but they do extend the game in general.
Now, whoever wants to support a faction on-foot only, can do it. Who's interested in on foot combat now has the option. And so on

And, most importantly, everyone that prefer spacefaring can simply ignore it...
At least they didnt do the same mistake with Horizons engineers which could be hardly ignored (and provided a big advantage over the base users)
For example i dont enjoy much Horizons only gameplay (planetary missions - i rarely do those, i skipped Ram Tah quests, etc), but i did the stuff that enhanced my ships - Engineers and Guardians
So on one hand i feel rather bad that EDO is so disconnected with ED, on the other hand i'm quite glad it is.

I get it, but if you like ground pew pew, why not play planetside ? It's better in every way possible.
I mean, you lose on the BGS aspect of it, but gain in every other aspect of it.

And I was speaking of the triangle of combat. Basically, having a use for the ship instead of a glorified taxi (which you can replace by an actual taxi). All those years since horizon, and we have yet to have a reason to fight in atmo. NPC dropship are not considered hostile (and will give you a bounty/notoriety). We don't have mission where we need to clear the airspace before landing.
That kind of stuff.

Connections don't have to be "improving your ship through ground activities". That's actually a bad way to connect, because it would lead to powercreep, as you saw with horizon.

Ram Tah quest I never done. It bugged, and never appeared for me. Didn't know there was one until recently. I guess I may have it fixed talking to support, but I'm lazy, and not that interested :D

Well, without BGS i can play any other shooter out there.
And while i dont do BGS usually, it's nice to know that my implication in this or that skirmish means more than a number of kills on the scoreboard.

The Combat triangle makes for a bad combat mechanic imo - since it's hard to match the ship weapon's range and firepower while still making the game interesting from solo and multiplayer perspectives - and i think i was more of a marketing gimmick than anything else.
Not at last, i guess we did read too much into it.

Pretty much like we did with the Armstrong moment - another marketing ploy that build unrealistic hype (and disappointment)

Thanks for the info guys. I think ill pick this game up next time it's on sale. I'm fine with slow immersive gameplay. Its rare you see any medieval games that dont involve fantasy.

Back to the topic I'm fine with Odyssey being delayed. As long as its delayed and not canceled. Even if I have to wait till the end of 2022. For the time being I'm focusing on AX combat and I've set my goal to able to solo a Medusa. That's a tall order since I cant even kill a Basilisk atm but I'm confident I'll be able to do it eventually.
