Odyssey space has "too much contrast" - breaking down the rendering of a frame

The tribalism hasn't gone unnoticed for me either, it's very unfortunate and I find it's gotten worse particularly since EDO released (no real surprise about the dynamics I suppose). What gets to me a lot more than a few habitual complainers (I know them by now so usually just skip reading their posts) though is the gang of a few posters who are intent on derailing every single critical (even if it's well argued and has merit) thread with the same old tired meme posting, until the thread gets closed eventually, while that thread is kept open despite it being the ultimate derail exercise (fwiw I didn't like the OP but it should've just been closed just like the rest of it then). It's a pity because I enjoy well reasoned debates, something that drew me here in the first place.
I take it you are referring to those who just show up to every thread and post "DOOOOOM", comments that curiously *never seem to get removed or get warnings," and people that say "elite is dead."

Whether or not other have mentally put me in either camp, I agree neither extreme is useful to discussion. Tbh most "debates" on this forum tend to end up in the Us vs Them dynamic where one side thinks Odyssey is great and criticisms are invalid, or Odyssey is unsaveable and praise of any kind of invalid.

I keep wondering whether posting on this forum is even worth it anymore because there's always someone who feels the need to tell you that you're completely wrong regardless of which side you favor.

At least on the subreddit there seems to be less extremes.

I couldn't resist it: How 'fixed' the lighting is - I bought this Anaconda this afternoon and grabbed the start screen in both Horizons & Odyssey. Tactical Graphite PJ and Lunar Hunter Decal.

Which version did Frontier intend us to be flying?
The seemingly complete removal of emissive paint schemes and decals in Odyssey is really bothering me, especially since the thumbnails for them in EDO clearly indicate they are supposed to be emissive.

But if FDev comments are anything to go by, apparently these discrepencies are only an issue because of "commander expectations" and would not be considered a problem if it wasn't for players.

Yeah those, but I usually don't engage and just try ignore them as I find it tedious and their posts don't really add any value to a conversation.

There are still decent discussions to be had though, including with those who don't necessarily share your or my opinion. For as long as that is still possible I'll hang around, although there probably will come a point where it becomes clear that neither patch is going to make much of a difference to sway my views on the game (EDO particularly, I still love ED in general) and there's little left to discuss and just accept things and move on.

I reckon this will be around patch 8 or 9, and by that time if Frontier isn't spilling any beans on more fundamental changes or additions to the actual game itself (rather than fixing tech and bugs) I'll take that as a "this is it take it or leave it" statement by them and let the thing go.

Agreed on all points. Just want to stress to you and anyone else reading this: it is perfectly ok to put Elite on the back burner and play other games. You are not betraying or forsaking any one or any community. If Odyssey is impacting your enjoyment negatively, you have no obligation to force yourself to play. Find something you do enjoy, where it comes naturally; only got one life, so you may as well enjoy the things you do on your own terms.

And that goes for those that enjoy odyssey as well; if you're enjoying it, then keep on keepin' on.

Is there any fix for this yet? I just switched to the current version since Horizons (now called Legacy) will essentially no longer be supported. Everything looked great in Horizons, but now I can't even bear to play the game since the colors are so off. I've tried messing with every available setting in game, and no matter what I do, some things are too dark (inbox/chat) while other things are blindingly bright. There seems to be no middle ground.

I love how it's been 3 years and it's still broken, issues filed on the problem tracker says "fixed" but it clearly still looks like ass.

I've opened up a new issue on the tracker if people want to make noise about it.

Maybe someone with better knowledge can write an injector to patch the issues if FD can't be bothered.

There is some options for HDR in the GraphicsConfiguration.xml file, but I'm not using SDR display so not entirely sure it applies here.

Different.

View with your own subjectivity -- take the bad with the good.

I'd love to see what those things could look like, which currently get blown out to solid white in the game, if actually done full-range on an HDR display, instead of being clipped or compressed for SDR.

It does. HDR here doesn't refer to any HDR transport/display standard and isn't meant for HDR displays. These settings still have extensive control over how the image is displayed.

Is it broken?

Yes.

I'm sure improvements have been made, but 4.x is still either destroying information it shouldn't, or rendering stuff it shouldn't.

This is something we can actually improve. Most of the high brightness stuff that gets blown out can be seen by tuning graphics parameters and brightness of darker content can be restored by retrofitting an HDR swap chain with 3rd party tools.

I know there have been complaints about white stars' brightness being disproportionately bright/bleached out now... see Cuppy's streams!

Yeah... Sometimes Odyssey looks like a remaster to me. New shiny shaders put into an environment not really made for it.
One of the most annoying things for me is the skybox being tinted by the main star of the system. Completely kills my immersion everytime, and shows how the tinting feature is implemented to just affect the whole scene like a reshade shader, and is not custom made to exclude certain objects. You can't have the Milky Way, stars and Nebulas being affected by a local light source...

Then there's light overbrighttening areas making it seem like it's white paint, not illuminating anything but painting over it. Ship lights tend to do that, even at daylight.
The bloom effect of the hud is also so annoying that I keep the glow down at a minimum.

I'd really love for space to actually look like space again. Or at least have a believable representation instead of this fantasy vision.
It's really a shame, because it's all there. The calculated skybox, stars and planets made after their real counterparts...
Kinda feels like blasphemy to use that kind of lighting with it.
