Newcomer / Intro old questions from a *new* player ( sorta late to the pilot party here ) ...

If you press "CTRL" + "+" your browser window zooms in - "CTRL" + "-" zooms out - "CTRL" + "0" resets to normal. You can also zoom in and out by holding the control key and rotating your mouse wheel - again control plus 0 resets to normal zoom.

Alternatively you can hold control and roll the mouse wheel. Apologies if this was mentioned already

Oh wait, you said it too. Never mind

No worries and cool forum-photo btw ( box under your name )

Also, for anyone as usual.... couple more questions please:

25. Last nite, before server-maintenance , i was doing a basic 'Threat Level 1' Odyssey on-foot mission against 5 NPC enemies and i ran out of AMMO lol ugh . So i tried hitting the last 2 remaining enemies with my gun handle, but got killed. Then i was wondering: If i can't find an ammo cache (container) nearby to loot , can i just go back onto my ship ( or 'SRV' ) real quick during combat to replenish ammo?
26. Speaking of server-maintenance: What happens if you're in supercruise or flying in Space or even stuck on barren planet and the server shuts down before you can get back to base or station? Does the game just auto-boot you back there to nearest station or settlement? or nearest where your ship last docked?
27. i'm still confused by this recent patch-note from today's update--> https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threa...-05-thursday-16-may-2024.625478/post-10377049 ....and haven't gotten a clear answer yet, so i was just wondering if anyone here could translate & explain better to me?
28. Whenever i purchase a new ship that is vehicle capable, do i have to re-buy & re-configure another brand NEW individual 'SRV' again for that new specific ship? Or does my already owned/customized SRV just carryover from ship to ship?
*THANKS again fellow Commanders for all the replies & tips & such. /salute

25 - yes - you see the replenished when you step into the transporter area (where your suit recharges)

26 - when you leave the game anywhere you come back to the same place - if the game shuts down on you, you come back at the last entry in your journal (exit supercruise, exit hyperspace, etc)

27 - dunno, the CMs are not at all communicative so no official answer - I think best be safe than sorry and assume you will be in Open after you first hyperjump - so exit game right away after your hyperjump and restart in solo if you want to play it real safe

28 - you need to re-outfit each time - your hangar does not move with you, it is part of the ship, not cargo - you can of course store the hangar and then transfer it into your new ship, the SRV will still be in the hangar (but annoyingly it will have lost its personalisation (repaint decals etc))

ok cool thats what i figured but wanted to be sure.

And quick follow-up please, regarding combat on-foot: i keep getting killed just doing basic "easy" Threat Level 1 Odyssey missions ( like "retrieve item at crash-site" ) from the NPC questgivers at Chamberlain's Station. I've been playing 1st-person-shooters for many years and i'm pretty sure i'm a better-than-average FPS gamer , but somehow i keep getting rek'd from just Threat Level 1 NPC ai gankfest of 3-6 enemies bearing down on me at once, since they seem to have both night-vision ( which i can't figure out how to get into MY suit btw ) and insanely accurate shots that take down my suit-shields in seconds.

Plus, it's a barren moon/planet , with maybe a few rocks here & there, so there's not much LOS'ing nor cover to use. -- The missions all say to bring a "Maverick Suit" , but maybe i should be bringing the COMBAT suit instead? ( i thought i needed Maverick suit for the 'e-breach' ARC-cutter aspect though? )

*edited to correct e-breach misnamed, instead i meant 'Arc-cutter'

That is a question for @Tyres O'Flaherty - I don't do FPS stuff, in fact I absolutely hate what that has done to my game. Elite to me is grossly devalued when I see ships in space as being in "teams". One good thing about Legacy, wings are still called wings.

BTW - your ned the Maverick suit as you need (are supposed to?) to use the arc-cutter tool, only found with that suit. E-breaches are another thing entirely.

Threat level 1 might be the lowest, not sure if there is a 0, but it doesn’t mean it is easy just that the others should be harder. As mentioned Tyres is the local on foot combat fan and will know more than me about missions. If you need a Maverick there should be something to break into to do the mission so you might have to swap suits after shooting everyone.

Night vision is not standard on a suit it has to be added by engineering or you have to find a pre-engineered suit with it on at a Pioneer store, I have bought some suits with it and bound the control to the same one as my ship and SRV. It is a useful addition to a suit as it is less of an energy hog than the torch and is less noticeable.

The foot missions are a bit strange. On almost every ground POI there is a chance some scavs will turn up or already be there. If none are there or show up, it's a cake walk. If some do turn up how you fight them has a great affect on how easy it is.

The easy way to fight a lot of them is to just nuke them from your ship, another cakewalk situation, ground troops aren't really a match for a gunship. Preferred weapons for this are missiles or others with splash damage. The thing to do here is to wait a bit at a POI for scavs to show, usually there are no more than 2 drops of scavs. Be careful you don't accidentally nuke your objective doing this though.

The harder way is to fight on foot. The problem with ED is a lot of planet POIs are just bare desert, no terrain to take advantage of. Scavs however, like to have at least one sniper and with no cover they will 2 shot you in short order if you don't keep moving. I don't know much about other FPS (not my jam) but in ED you are mostly not rambo, if you get swarmed you will likely die. You can mitigate this a bit with G5 gear, shield grenades and using your own ship's shields for cover.

To get a feel for how to survive ground combat in ED do a few ground CZs.

Can you elaborate on that please a bit? How is being able to land & fight on planets/moons a bad thing? i love Space-flight , but i might go bonkers if i couldn't set foot on the GROUND every once in a while lol . -- But anyways, i also don't know any better since i only just started this game with Odyssey , so my perspective is obviously very skewed.

yeah sorry i actually edited my post above ^^ after i realized i had accidentally typed the wrong item word

Good thinkin' yeah i keep forgetting my SHIP is right there parked closeby and i need to use it's swapping/replenish functionality more.

yep i been lookin' , but haven't found any Pioneer place selling with night vision.....yet. 👨‍🚀

hmm that seems fun but also tricky , since often times landing near these mission POI's are on darkside of planet .

Couldn't i instead just try using my SRV to combat the groups of NPC groups of soldier enemies next time and hopefully that will help even out the odds?

sorry but what are "CZs" ? i'm guessing you mean those 'Conflict Zones' i sometimes see when i'm targetting space-blips ? ( some of them say "low intensity" below the names , iirc )

* By the way , last nite something strange/new happened to me.... i was on planet , just doing a normal basic Transportation ( deliver/pickup ) mission from computer console , and somehow 1 of the NPC patrol soldiers (at the "peaceful" settlement ) went to SCAN me like usual , but the NPC was actually hidden behind a barrier or something , so it basically was LOS'ing itself . So then its ai thought i was "running away" to avoid the scan , even though i was just moving around to be within NPC flashlight to get the scan overwith faster. -- Next thing i know, the entire base is ATTACKING ME lol

So of course i tried to run/jump away back to my ship , but even though i was standing within blue circle to BOARD my ship , the game wouldn't allow me to board and then i got rek'd by like 8 npc soldiers and died. --- THEN, i "awake" to find myself "locked" in a JAIL cell and some random Military brig station in 'Capricorn' system.

i guess the game auto-paid my "fine" and let me exit the jail cell , but when i go back into my ship parked at this brig station ( which had billboards saying "We Are Watching You" everywhere lol ) , i check Galaxy map and realize it placed me 13 jumps away from that prevoius settlement & system i was in when i died.

Luckily , i happened to be on maiden voyage 1st time outfitting my 'Python' ship , so i had enough fuel to last a whopping 13 jumps. ( for me as newbie, 13 jumps seems like "a lot" ) . Took me like 2 hours to finally get back "home" to Chamberlain's Rest starter zone , but along the way i finally scanned my 1st few undiscovered planets!

Although i was a bit confused because in Space , when i targetted the blips , it said "Undiscovered" , but then in my Codex later when i checked it only said i had "confirmed" the locations that some other player had actually originally 1st-footed back some years ago?

Once you have been targeted for scan do NOT move, any attempt to move around, even if it's to move closer to the security bod, will be seen as hostile!

Personal taste is all. I bought this game (back in 2015) as a space-travel game, I have played it almost continually (maybe a week or two without logging-in every time I got annoyed at something - {moderators since I came on the forum*, idiots back when I resided in /r}). The week I started was the "Wings" update, closely fallowed by my first annoyance - the PowerPlay update, which ruined my trade routes.

I have never been into FPS - tried it a few times but it really wasn't my bag - I have never successfully completed the Odyssey on-foot tutorial for example. I did have a look in a CZ once - but that was to check graphics/PC performance and surprised myself at how long it took for me to get killed -
Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwbCqojAQ8E

- however, it didn't float my boat.

I have to admit I enjoy getting out of the SRV to scan thingies - I just don't like killing collections of photons that are in the shape of living beings.

None of that will ever cause me to forgive FDEV for changing "wings" of ships into "teams" - it is annoying.

* Like a lot of people I knew on Reddit, I was put off joining the Frontier Forum because of the cess-pit that was Dangerous Discussions. I only relented and joined the forum when I was gifted a Planet Zoo game. I was surprised to find there are areas of sanity in it, especially since /r became no fun anymore.

You don't land, you rocket them to death in the air, that's the entire point of a gunship. Nuking them from your ship is far easier than doing it by SRV, but that is also an option. At night their little lights actually give away their position and even if they switch them off, night vision is a thing you get on ships for free, unlike your suits.
sorry but what are "CZs" ? i'm guessing you mean those 'Conflict Zones' i sometimes see when i'm targetting space-blips ? ( some of them say "low intensity" below the names , iirc )
Those are space CZs. Ground CZs you do from the Frontline shop in the station concourse.

Be careful not to park your ship/SRV too close by as it may get attacked and damaged/destroyed while you are busy.

yep i been lookin' , but haven't found any Pioneer place selling with night vision.....yet. 👨‍🚀
Keep an eye on this thread for suits and equipment for sale.

hmm that seems fun but also tricky , since often times landing near these mission POI's are on darkside of planet .
Ships have night vision installed as standard so that should help, don't try to target individuals on foot you can only do that while they are actually shooting your ship so a weapon that works without a target lock is recommended.

Couldn't i instead just try using my SRV to combat the groups of NPC groups of soldier enemies next time and hopefully that will help even out the odds?
Yes but there is more cover than from aerial attacks and your SRV can be destroyed.

sorry but what are "CZs" ? i'm guessing you mean those 'Conflict Zones' i sometimes see when i'm targetting space-blips ? ( some of them say "low intensity" below the names , iirc )
Yes, they also occur on the ground they are where Frontline Solutions take you to die fight.

Don't move while they are scanning until they say so, this is why jumping around a settlement is risky as it is very difficult not to move while in mid leap.

At least you were close by, sometimes you can be shipped a long way away.

Congratulations, but it sounds like you need a fuel scoop.

Yes, only some systems have full data loaded into your ships database so you can discover stuff that is new to you but well known to others, to get rid of the undiscovered you could drop out of cruise near the nav beacon, target that and wait while your ship downloads the system data or go to zero throttle in supercruise and using the many bindings needed use the FSS (Frequency Something Something) to get details about all the bodies and other things in the system, you could then travel to those bodies and using the DSS (Detailed Surface Scanner) an optional module map those bodies a process not unlike an orbital bombardment.

The thing is if you do all that and then fail to sell the information at a station at least 20 light years away or a more conveniently located carrier before you get blown up next you will lose the information and have to do it again.

Personal taste is all.

None of that will ever cause me to forgive FDEV for changing "wings" of ships into "teams" - it is annoying.
No worries , but i thought it was 'Wings' ( forming a small group with friends? ) and 'Squadrons' , which is sorta like a guild here?

Where does this "teams" thing come from exactly?
Those are space CZs. Ground CZs you do from the Frontline shop in the station concourse.
ahh ok , hmm i don't think the Chamberlain's Rest ( Odyssey ) station has a 'Frontline shop' . Or at least i haven't noticed it yet.
Congratulations, but it sounds like you need a fuel scoop.
Already have one--> https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/python-mk-2-stellar-ideas.625231/post-10377558 ...but it's just the basic starter version and i need to practice my routine better.
Yes, only some systems have full data loaded into your ships database so you can discover stuff that is new to you but well known to others,
oh ok gotcha , well hopefully someday i will stumble upon something 1st-foot ! 🛰️

THANKS again everyone for the continuous replies & intel.

It was Wings up until Odyssey launched when someone decided that a group of players joined up on foot should be a team unfortunately that was also applied to when you join up with other commanders in space.

If they couldn’t have dealt with two names for similar things I do wish they had done it the other way and stuck with wings.

ahhhh ok , well yeah then i totally agree with u guys now it totally makes more sense ( your perspective i mean )

Greetings all , my name is NEE and i'm neither "elite" nor "dangerous"....YET ! ;)

crickets

So, first i'd like to apologize for any questions i'm about to ask that have possibly been asked/answered already 93845734957 times. Yes i did a quick forum search for most of these , and even tried to google some of them , but frankly it's just easier/better to hear directly from pilots in posts. ( especially since i've heard such good things about this community as a whole ) . So yeah, THANKS in advance to anyone willing to indulge yet another newbie!

Sadly, i only just started this game a couple days ago and haven't even ventured off the starter space-station yet after finishing the ground Odyssey training mission. Long story short, as an avid pilot vet of SWG's JTL , SWTOR's GSF , SW:Squadrons, and yes, dare i admit, even Starfield ( don't flame me lol ) i've recently become very intrigued by your Elite Dangerous and tbqh can't believe i never tried out this game years ago.

But whatever i'm here now, so yeah of course i have a ton of questions, most of which i'm too afraid to ask because i'm trying to avoid spoilers in the hopes i'll be able to really enjoy as much discovery & mystery as possible. Annnnywayyys, here are a few questions ( well, more than "a few" lol sorry! ) that i actually would like to ask and maybe someone won't mind answering....
  1. Is there any option to increase font-size on these forums? And how can i delete my own posts/threads? ( i don't see an option yet in the edit ui ... Unless maybe i'm too newbie still to be granted delete privilages? )
  2. A couple of ED players keep telling me how mouse&keyboard is "way more accurate" to use with this game. Is this true? ( i personally despise "flying" with m&k , because it just simply doesn't feel immersive nor responsive enough to me , so i always prefer using my patented Wingman Flightstick )
  3. i've been reading a lot on the interwebs about ED vets being "upset" with this whole new pre-built ship + Python readymade prepurchase ( plus Engineering changes ) but i still don't fully understand what the detrimental situation is since i never played ED before. Is this like similar to what the dreaded NGE did to SWG back in the day? As in, altering the very fabric/spirit of the game too much? Or is it not quite that drastic?
  4. Are the massive Carrier ships only for groups/guilds ? And does ED even have guilds in the traditional sense or is it something entirely different?
  5. How often are the 'arx' store sales? i'm guessing what like twice per year maybe? ( summertime and holiday season? )
  6. Is customization of ships/suits only available from 'arx' store? or also from in-game selling market? ( and also from player crafting? )
  7. Does the recent Odyssey update mean that i can basically land into on-foot 1st person shooter ground mode on any & every planet/moon/asteroid? Or is it more dependent and restrictive, based on missions or systems?
  8. Other than basic griefing , what's the purpose of PVP "gankers" ? Can they loot resources or items from your ship after they destroy?
  9. Will ED ever implement player-built settlements or bases? Have the developers ever discussed it at all? ( expansion-wise i mean )
  10. Is everything in game solo-able ( grind time + effort + knowledge, etc. ) or do some things require a group to complete/achieve/discover?
  11. Lots of YouTube videos & tutorials keep saying something about "stay in the bubble!" --What exactly is "the bubble" ? Is that like stay close to home station so as to avoid PVP gankers? If so, how does anyone ever explore & discover new worlds or resources, etc. ?
  12. From what i've read so far, it doesn't seem like ALTs are absolutely necessary. ( which i like, since i have enough characters in other games as it is lol ) -- Is this true? Or do most people multibox with ALTs a ton here in ED too like most other MMOs ?
  13. ( RESERVED for later follow-up post )
.... Much appreciated and sorry again for some retread/redundant type questions. -- /tip-hat fellow pilots! 🚀
Most of your questions have been answered, but here is my take on some;

1: You should be able to set the font size in your browser, or use <ctrl> + mouse wheel.
If you choose <edit> you should be able to delete your whole post.

2: I played with mouse and keyboard for some time, but switching to a Logitech (now Saitek) X52 made it much more immersive.
I also have a mini keyboard like this in the middle, very helpful.
For on foot missions i use the mini keyboard + mouse.

Have fun and fly dangerous.

...
If you choose <edit> you should be able to delete your whole post.
...

You can delete the content but you cannot actually delete the post. (I think you have to have a few characters in the post body or the edit won't save - I leave some full stops.......)

Most of your questions have been answered,

Have fun and fly dangerous.
Will do !

Really enjoying EliteD so far and i've barely even scratched the surface of this game.... 🚀
You can delete the content but you cannot actually delete the post.
Yep EDIT = psuedo delete

btw, i've noticed a couple "volunteer Moderators" but otherwise not much interaction with the Frontier DEV team typically? ( i'm guessing they just keep things consolidated within: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/forums/elite-dangerous-news/ section? )

------------------

Also, couple more quick questions for whenever anyone has a moment....

29. Finally did my 1st Exobiology sample search last nite , but it only allowed me to scan/sample ONCE within the area. Said something like "genetic sample isn't unique enough" ( or something to that effect ) , even though there were around 20 plants in this little bunch spot. Is this normal? As in, i've already sampled that TYPE on this particular planet , so then i'm done with it forever? Or just on this planet?
30. After doing a few Conflict Zones ( Odyssey ground version ) from Chamberlain's Rest base , i went back to try a couple more but the NPC missiongiver said something like "all conflicts are over" ( or battle has calmed down or something ) . So i couldn't pickup any more CZs anymore from that NPC. Is this because no players in the area have activated ( or re-activated? ) certain trigger events making FACTIONS to fight eachother ? And this is totally separate from the upcoming 'PowerPlay 2.0' system, right?

29.: depending of species, you'll need to travel s minimum distance ( on that planet) in order to be able to scan the next sample. You'll need three samples per species - and your sampler can only handle one species at any time.
