Only you, FdEv, only you...

Simple. Because they think that better/engineered gear is some kind of "silver bullet" which will fight the battle instead of them and they will not need to learn how to fly.
It is similar in all MMOs. Peoples tend to believe that better gear will correct their lack of understanding of game mechanics.
It's Final Fantasy X all over again

The Engineer went down on a Thursday.... so just wait until next Thursday.

After all, plenty of CMDRs went to Maia to splash some Thargoids.
Hell even I went down there and scooped up a few of their remains - and I don't even need Palin for anything anymore nor had I ever battled Thargoids.

Just wait and see... next Thursday. Then re-assess the Situation.

If anything, they made a move that affects something. Finally. Something worth taking note of, possibly the first time.

If the Thargoids are going to murder Selene Jean I'm totally on their side. Maybe we can get an engineer who doesn't sadistically torture me with mining.
Everything Jean directly offers can also be obtained from Olmanova with no mining needed.

Vatermann's G5 is obtainable from Brandon (also no mining), and all of Turner's blueprints except the Plasma Accelerator can also be obtained without mining elsewhere.

(Incidentally, Vatermann is currently the only other engineer besides Palin who has neither exclusive blueprints nor unlocks for engineers who do ... maybe they should also be checking for suspicious Thargoids...)

I don't think most noobs are doing G5 engineering
Yeah. When Frontier say it they mean people with Harmless-Aimless-Penniless rank who can't get their Sidewinder out of the docking bay without scraping the shields.

When forumites say it they mean someone with only one A-rated Anaconda.

Erm... Did any actual newb complained yet?
Or is still the oldies venting out?

I stated elsewhere, that I think it unfair. I am not affected directly, since while I have the 5000 ly long since, I still need to learn about Palin, so it does not affect my plans (yet).

On the other hand it is a slap into the face of newer players, who do not yet have unlocked Palin. I read here from at least one player who just does the 5000 ly journey, for nothing now. It just affects the players, who will not and cannot (yet?) fight Thargoids, because of not having an G5 OP super ships with special weapons. The player group who already has Palin has pinned the upgrade anyway and laughs at the other group, they tell us how we do not need Palin anyway, how to 'git gud' and things like that.

It is a really smart move on FDevs side, the usual 'quality', and a true QoL 'improvement' for newer players. We just learned, that every engineer can just disappear. The hassle to unlock an engineer might be useless. If they wanted to do something really consequential they would have disabled Palins upgrades also for all pinned upgrades, so that everybody is affected, not only newer players. While this would have spared us the condescending comments, it also would have caused a loud howling - and FDev did not have the balls to do that.

So we not only are grinding hard to catch up, and maybe fight Thargoids later, we now have disappearing engineers and a totally skewed, broken and stealth nerfed material gathering to fight. No time for CGs or Thargoid combat, and not the means. And the condescending comments from some 'community' members (who all have the upgrade pinned) do not really help too...

Simple question: is this a short narrative from fdev, or a permanent removal of an engineer/upgrades?

I think the response is hysterical nonsense from those pretending to be offended on behalf of "new players".

No it is not. Merely it's 1-2 weeks delay at the cost of nice narrative.
The new players can do just nice with G3 on basically anything a new player can do - sincerely i don't see a new one goin after thargoids or getting involved in high level pvp where even 10m/s matters.

As far as i'm concerned, it's better to keep the toys where they belong - in the pram that is.

I assume, you belong to the group already having the upgrade pinned, yes? I regard myself as a newer player, and do not have it yet.
I do not 'pretend' to be offended, I just commented about fair game mastery, a thing Frontier has still to learn. I am not offended actually, it takes much more. This game is not important enough for me to be offended.
But I stand by my comments, take it or leave it.

And you also have Palins upgrades already, I assume? Yes?
And you do 'not see a new one goin after thargoids or getting involved in high level pvp where even 10m/s matters', that's nice. So why would this poor idiot need Palin anyway? So true. But what effect will the 'nice narrative' have on newer players? And why does the '1-2 weeks delay at the cost of nice narrative' not also affect players, who already have Palins upgrades pinned? I would not have said a word if it were so, but affecting only new players and hindering them is a bad idea.
But as I said, I am not affected yet, and maybe it will resolve itself in several weeks, and maybe I will play in the meantime, but careful not to grind for things which are possibly just taken away later for some 'other nice narrative'.
Have fun!

I haven't played for months but I'm assuming Palin's base is under attack or locked down?

Seriously, how is this any kind of shock? He should have been under near-constant assault from them since the first day they appeared, the guy is essentially a vivisectionist. I can just picture him sitting on his Thargoid skin recliner, behind his desk made from the jawbones of Thargoids, inside his lab constructed entirely of Thargoid skulls, nibbling a crispy fried Thargoid heart whilst wondering 'Wow, what have I done to deserve this?' 🙄
