Opinion: 10 LY range for colonization is ridiculously low.

I was partially so sure that the range would be on the low end when colonization was first announced because the system might want/need to interact with existing trade routes (which are probably 10Ly in range?).

We didn't get any details about the economy part, or if it affecting trade which worries me further - will our colonized systems feed back into the bubble systems that they build off off and help their economies which funnel the gains further inwards until LYR gets all the money in the galaxy.

A 10Ly range because of that would be very justified, but there's no real payoff for the players in that case either - this is partly because the economy doesn't matter since there's ships/modules/gear isn't limited by economy or raw materials (and maybe shouldn't be).

Except it is, just not in any visible way. Tech levels , relevant stats and things intermingling with it are a thing... or at least were... maybe it's been sutured off (e.g like influence and conflicts), but these existed at a time and were dynamic within a small arc. There's a great many things that may appear to be static/random, but actually use many inputs from the BGS. The failing is these don't appear more than random or static.

Yes it kinda is, but you can buy everything at Shinrarta / Stronghold Carriers so it doesn't matter to most players. Even without that the bubble is big enough that even if it's an hassle you'll be able to scrounge up whatever parts you need. It would be interesting if you could build out of Colonia and find a good enough system that lets you stock/build all the ships/weapons that would otherwise be unavailable there. This is because bringing all your good ships to Colonia could be a hassle, this isn't the case with systems that are 10Ly from the bubble.

I also imagine colonization has to make some of those hidden stats more visible, but then again this is FDev we're talking about.

It would totally be possible to have mechanics where you can build/sell pre-engineered weapons in your systems or sell your engineered ships for credits (or oops that undercuts the prebuilts now) or do other economic stuff thats only availible in colonized systems - there's been no mention of anything like that (even a sensible version of it) that and I doubt we'll get anything new out of it that feeds back into other systems.

What I still see as a missing factor in colonization is the effect of mass migration on population, local powers, and a stable economy. Just look at Colonia's low population counts, I've no idea why a few billion people in the core haven't jumped there to start a new life.

That's the reason I hope for way more range

A few points...

I think we can assume that we can't colonize systems with no planets in them?
A station needs a planet to orbit, am I correct.. I know of none that orbit a star alone?

The other point is the BGS faction who controls the new system. I wonder if its the faction that owns the station you initiated the colonization from or the controlling faction of the system you are colonizing from.

We definitely need some clarifications.
I am sure I have seen systems with a station and no planets, I also seem to recall one with an outpost or maybe an asteroid base orbiting the star in a system with planets.

So my question is... What do I get from this? I spend capital and time to bring up a system, that can and will get taken over... Why? What motivation do I have?
Hopefully fun, a pleasant passing of time here in the 21st century and the betterment of mankind in the 34th century.
But will it be fun? I ground out the Corvette, now I don't even have one, just can't find a good use for it.
I think this will be much the same, another checkbox, I did this... Now what?
Well if you don’t find it fun and you don’t come up with a good use for it then of course like your Corvette it should be discarded and ignored so you can concentrate on what you do find fun and useful in the game.

Heck, if I made a good strategic choice (or finding 3xPlatinum Hotspots overlap, haha,
Good luck with that, based on my limited testing, just finding a decent system to expand into is going to be challenging and very time consuming.

Well that is already a thing, just look at all the useless engineered modules I have clogging up my storage!

You should sell the useless ones before FDev introduce a module recycling feature.

Nobody owns systems, all you will get for 'founding' the settlement will be the design of the system facility's and the layout.
All systems are subject to the BGS.

🤣🤣🤣

I have been aggressively culling them... The recent decision to downsize my fleet has cramped my storage so a lot had to go. Also, I figured they wouldn't add module recycling due to the ease of acquiring mats... That means, with my luck, they will add it now for sure!

I actually hoped they would with all of the FSD's I have in stock...

I understand that, but for me, like the limited appeal of first scanned and first foot fall, it will soon be a been there/done/ got the t-shirt kinda thing.

It would be nice to get some kind of tangible thing from the gameplay... I would say revenue stream based on economy, like a royalty, but we already have more credits than we can use.

There is sooo many possibilities...
You can:
  • be mentioned in eachs station/system map as an System Architect - fame, fame, fame :D
  • have possibility to name system/stations - because why not?
  • have own contact to recive messages from other players with their requests of how system shoudl be develop - more interaction with other players and some kind of cooperation, or even you can leave the mission for them
  • have a % of every transaction in the system - but we have a lot of credits
  • have discounts in that system for ships / modules / commodity - it's some kind of profit
  • have certain amount of produced commodity in that system every week (like for an example if there are tritium hotspot in the system and you will build some extraction station) - what will create new game loop - you can fly and recieve goods from your systems and sell it somewhere else or use it for PP2.0
  • you can drop your own mission for other players to support your PP2.0 goals or make some lore-based missions (ok, my imagination went too far probably hahaha)
