Panther Clipper Captains!

Well, this topic (and the picture posted up by "Patrick_68000"...thanks btw! :) ) prompted me to have a look at the old Frontier Elite 2 Manual (Amiga Version).
I like the 'new' design of the Panther Clipper, I wonder if this is the 'final' version?
I also wonder how different the new 'specs' for this ship will be in relation to the old design?
To be perhaps a bit of a pendant I've typed up the old specifications (as per the manual I own) in case anyone is interested, or feeling a touch of nostalgia.
I've also included the 'Boa' specs just in case "akr" was interested, as I also used the Boa quite frequently in the game, mainly because you could fit a fuel scoop to this ship and couldn't on the Panther...I seem to remember?

Maybe not pixelcounting, but it would be nice to see a sidewinder flying right next to a 'conda, aye.

There are youtube clips up of exactly that.

There is one single player mission where you have to take out an Anaconda but it doesn't consider you a threat till you fire.

So you can fly around admiring it from all angles as long as you want.

Its big :D

I loved the panther clipper, the thruster turning from launch to flying was awesome there was nothing else like it around and it also cost so much in game, I hope there will be a similar type craft in ED

I'm disappointed with the new Panther Clipper in Elite: Dangerous.

Love the Cobra and Anaconda but the Panther looks like a completely different ship. I want my butt ugly brick with moving legs ! :D

Interesting :p I'm torn on this, I like the design but you're right, big freighters should be ugly and fat. This got me thinking again about the picture Patrick posted, for example the hind "wind spoiler" seems to be purely decorational. I think the larger a ship gets, the more functional it should look. The new panther looks really awesome, like a killer whale, but not like the biggest freighter.

About the moving thrusters, I always wondered in elite how the front thrusters are supposed to work, since they are blocked by the rear thrusters lol. So I'm glad they changed that.

That was an early concept of the beast, it may... or may not look a bit different now, as might some of the other Zorgon Petterson ships, so don't pin too much on that concept.

AH! So it's going to be completely yellow in-game?

Woot.

Yellow panthers confirmed in Elite. (potential Jungle expansion inbound?)

I hark back to the long nights i've spent mining some obscure planet in my huge Panther Clipper and then blasting away the pirates that try and stop me jumping out of the system to make a healthy profit.

Any other Panther Clipper captiains out there looking forward to making huge profits in Elite again?

Yeh the Panther was an absolute hoot to fly, happy days ;)

here a yellow preview for you:

Sounds cool that you have a style for manufacturers. I REALLY wish FD would release more eye candy though ;)

Yeah the ship itself looks good .... just not how I pictured the iconic Panther in the new game (especially since the 'conda and cobra are so close to the originals)

I always figured the moving thrusters on the old Panther worked by space magic

Hehe just googled and found a video of it. Apparently it's dark magic :p

I goggled because I thought maybe the forward thrusters are actually there to do the breaking, but they aren't.

I would actually like a ship like that to fly totally stupid. Imagine the panther legs don't rotate and it just keeps flying upward, the cockpit stubbornly refusing to look the way the ship is flying :p "Who cares where I'm going? Herpa derp make way!"

Ha ha, yeah it's not the best mechanism is it. Poor John Kelly has been trying to work on a way to get the thing to work properly, he's doing great.
