Planet Coast Console Edition: Frontier Cloud

Last livestream we got a look at the frontier workshop..... which kind of left me disappointed.

There are a bunch of things that wont come to console or are not currently announced:
  • No cross platform play or cross platform sharing (so no pc parks/blueprints on console)
  • No ThemeMaker ToolKit,
  • No DLC's currently announced,
  • No custom media (including fonts)

I already have a solution for the custom media, cross platform sharing and Thememaker tools:

I suggest that Frontier adds a google drive-like platform / functionality to the frontier workshop that can be accessed from in-game and from the pc browser.
This cloud drive would be separate for each user. This would allow users to use their pc or phone to acces the frontier cloud using their browser and upload custom media, like images, video's and sounds (and 3d models). Then in-game on console, the Frontier cloud can be accessed from the frontier workshop and then you can choose that media to be used for speakers or screens.

This would also allow users to download blueprints from the steam workshop and upload them to the frontier cloud to then be placed in-game. You would of course add fail safes if the blueprint is too big for console and then disallow them to upload it to their frontier cloud.

As I said you could share blueprints, you can download a blueprint from the steam workshop and then upload it to your frontier cloud, it would also work the other way around. you upload your blueprint to the cloud from the console in-game and then download it on pc and upload it to steam workshop. This would allow cross platform sharing.

This is a perfect solution for adding custom media to console and for cross platform sharing.

You could call it frontier cloud storage.

BlackBearFTW,

I completely agree with you! At first, I was really hyped for the entrance of this game coming to console and using mass amounts of blueprints created from STEAM. After watching the first livestream, they mentioned about Frontier Workshop and hoping they could connect 3 different platforms (PC, Xbox and PS). Once they told us that each blueprint shared would be in their respective platform, I was disappointed. Then in the second livestream which was posted a day or 2 ago, they cleared up how each workshop would work in each platform. Again, I was disappointed.

I think your idea could work, it'll take some time to take this into consideration, but if they do get this done I believe this could be the greatest creation ever for cross-platforming. As for your suggestion on TMTK, I am not familiar with this as it is used on PC, but I would be open to work with something new that has been done on PC crossed over to Console.

Overall, I hope this post get's recognized cause like you said, I'm starting to believe less in the game if they don't include what you mentioned.

It's time for both consoles to make cross-platform play and share work.
Hopefully Frontier will use your idea.

Since both Playstation and XBOX are more closer to PC similarities,
especially with the two consoles coming out next month. It would be cool if Steam was added to consoles.

Sounds like a great idea, if needed they can limit it to a certain space per user but atleast it would be something.

I think if they limited to a certain space per user, you wouldn't be able to download the blueprints you want if there's a max allotted. But if they even do this, then it's a step in the right direction

Hayo! Thanks for sharing your feedback. Your idea regarding the Frontier Cloud is certainly an interesting one, but it’s not something the team would be able to support at this time and there’s a couple of reasons for that:
  • When it comes to sharing between Steam and console, the format of the assets between Planet Coaster and Planet Coaster: Console Edition are completely different.
  • Sharing between console platforms is more complicated than it sounds, from a server point of view.
  • Importing custom assets isn’t something that you can directly do on a console. In addition, if a custom video file and texture are large in size, this requires a lot of very specialised in-game support. On PC, this is possible because Windows can allocate (virtual) memory, but on console it is an entirely different undertaking.
Thanks for sharing your ideas in this thread, all! :) While this may be a disappointing response for now, we wanted to give you an understanding of why the Frontier Workshop has been designed the way it has, and why there’s no Thememaker’s Toolkit or custom media. This is not something we are prepared to discuss further at this time.
