Planet textures dramatically degraded in U11

This is the terrain near trader's rest at laksak (the shield engineer guy I forget his name).

I thought it was a "one time" issue, but when I came back later on, it still looked the same.

It appears in my settings with my laptop screen @ 1920x1080, so that can't be the reason.
yeah, others noted it varies on some other condition or its not appearing on some users settings due to a bug. since it wouldn't be the first setting that required manually deleting the file to get it to show up.

Check the Terrain blending LOD setting. You have that off, which is possibly hiding the checkerboard setting.

It's like when you turn Antialiasing to something other than SMAA and then cannot select FSR. You may even have to exit settings and re-enter for it to show.

Deleted the entire folder (nothing was read-only beforehand either), the option still doesn't show up. And yeah, the setting was/is present in both files (not really sure why it's in both, though).

And just so you don't have to get bothered by any gameplay issues.
That is a great comparison video really (I'm aware of the differences as it were based on my own experience but it's nice to see them side-by-side like that)... half the performance for half the graphics, that's some trade-off. And still shows how much darker EDO is even in areas where this doesn't make any sense due to light sources present etc.

And it's not even entirely fair to Horizons either, because I'm capped at 120 FPS.

Delete your entire Options\Graphics folder and let the game rebuild it, or at the very least check that nothing in it is read only.
Did this when update 8 was released and it did wonders: prior to deletion whatever the settings I used - even the lowest ones - the performances were more and more awful while for many people update 8 was the start of good framerate.

Turn off vsync!
You don't know what Odyssey does to my CPU/GPU in supercruise when I don't cap FPS. ^^ But if I ever do another comparison video, I will. Any preferred lightweight applications for graphical overlays so I can include CPU/GPU loads as well?

Just try and blame this on console development, just try :)

When console development was canceled, the ongoing console branch was deleted from git. Unfortunately, a number of very important performance and fidelity changes had been made directly in that branch and were supposed to be cherry-picked over to master prior to deletion... a cherry-pick that never happened. So anyway, this oversight was caught Sunday evening, so the developer that made those changes had to work 48 hours straight to remake them from memory in time to dump them into Update 11.

Sleep deprivation and an unreasonable deadline did not improve his memory nor his commitment to quality.

^ what?

They use subversion btw, or at least they did last year.
subversion is not bad for storing binary data compared to git. But for code. it certainly goes a decent way into explaining how branch merging undoes fixes that had previously been applied.

Hmm... guess we're reach that stage in EDO dev where i can cap Elite to 60 fps and have a generally speaking much quieter laptop - at least in space

I don't like how FDev enables graphics degradation by default.
I missed the patch notes for U11 as I came back to ED after a few weeks and I thought I was either going crazy or my GPU was dying - the planet surface was super ugly and pixelated (even at 1440p it was painful to look at).
Instead of using what little precious time I had to actually play the game I spent the time trying to figure out what was causing it.

Not cool.

I don't like how FDev enables graphics degradation by default.

At least with checkerboard rendering, we have the option to adjust it.

There are several example of graphics degradation that have been patched in since the alpha that cannot be undone with settings.

The most notable, off the top of my head:
  • The removal of the original "ultra for capture" terrain quality setting.
  • Toning down of the fire effect, both in animation quality and bloom, for almost no performance improvement (I think they thought fire was causing problems actually caused by the bugged smoke shader, so, of course they broke the fire and left the smoke shader alone). This happened around U7, I think.
  • U11s reduction of certain terrain LODs, most noticeable on settlement paths/grates.
I'm sure there are others, but these three annoy me the most.

Edit: Also, U10 I believe, removed the reflections of the skybox from SRV and ship cockpit glass...which did actually help performance a little, but being able to toggle this would have been nice.
