Planet Zoo 2 Speculation and ideas

I think for me a good set of African antelopes would be the following:
  1. Blue Wildebeest
  2. Gemsbok
  3. Addax
  4. Bongo
  5. Impala
  6. Sable Antelope
  7. Thomson's Gazelle
I think with that set you get a good amount of variety, there is always more you could add like Eland, Dik-Dik, Springbok, Duiker, Waterbuck, Kudu, Blesbok, more Gazelles etc. but those are the core ones I'd include.
For PlanZo 2, my ideal base game roster would feature several key animals worldwide, but focusing primarily on Africa.
So, let's choose the starting 40 habitat animals:
  1. African lion
  2. African leopard
  3. Plains zebra
  4. Blue wildebeest
  5. Southern white rhinoceros
  6. Reticulated giraffe
  7. Thomson's gazelle
  8. Nyala
  9. Sable antelope
  10. Common warthog
  11. Common ostrich
  12. African elephant
  13. Spotted hyena
  14. Greater flamingo
  15. Bongo
  16. Okapi
  17. Chimpanzee
  18. Lowland gorilla
  19. Mandrill
  20. Ring-tailed lemur
  21. Black-and-white ruffed lemur
  22. Red ruffed lemur
  23. Red kangaroo
  24. Saltwater crocodile
  25. Grizzly bear
  26. American bison
  27. Northwestern wolf
  28. Bighorn sheep
  29. Jaguar
  30. Giant panda
  31. Red panda
  32. Sumatran tiger
  33. Siberian tiger
  34. Bornean orangutan
  35. Asian black bear
  36. Japanese macaque
  37. Indian peafowl
  38. Asian elephant
  39. Red deer
  40. European brown bear
Now, roughly every continent has some representation. DLCs will feature a few other heavy hitters and fill out the spaces in between, like oddballs and whatnot

Good. Just missing an exotic dog like mammal!

I feel with only 40 species 3 lemurs are a little overkill, so id probably change the 2 ruffed out for capuchin and gibbon. Or baboon if you wanna keep the african focus

Yeah, that'd probably be better. I'd go with the capuchin to give SA some.more animals

A nitpick would be having both Grizzly Bear and EBB is a bit redundant. I think a Seal/Sea Lion would be a stronger choice for base game. Or if you want to stick with a bear species, Polar Bear.

I'm not sure PZ2 would have a starting roster smaller than PZ1's ending roster, after all JW2 had almost all the dinosaurs from JW1 base game and dlc's, the only four exception being one that was moved to the Deluxe edition (so I'd say it doesn't really count) and three hybrid mutant dinosaurs invented for the game (so imo it doesn't really count either).
Anyway, I expect (and hope) that a sequel would include at least one of either actual flying birds or fully aquatic animals, and they would probably be present in the base game.
I also hope to see:
  • big qol upgrades in general, especially for building paths and habitats
  • performance optimisation
  • fully customisable vivariums, aquariums, aviaries, etc. (would probably be kind of a minigame)
  • exhibit animals: more animations, risks of disease and inbreeding, more customisable exhibit, different sizes of tanks
  • disease overhaul (not all animals should be susceptible to the same diseases)
  • more biome diversity (at the very least split aquatic into freshwater and saltwater, but I would do a complete overhaul)
  • some animals should need a certain level of verticality (as in, mountain animals need a lot of altitude variations in their habitat while plain animals like it better when everything is on the same level)
  • maybe a new kind of interactivity with rideable animals?

If the starting habitat roster for planet zoo 2 is smaller than the starting roster for planet zoo, I will actually be offended

According to the wiki, not counting the Deluxe pack and Anniversary updates, 50 habitat animals and 23 exhibit ones.
Ok, well let's add 10 more. I'll ignore exhibits for now:
  1. African lion
  2. African leopard
  3. African wild dog
  4. Plains zebra
  5. Blue wildebeest
  6. Southern white rhinoceros
  7. Reticulated giraffe
  8. Thomson's gazelle

  13. Dromedary camel

  17. Nile monitor
  18. Hippopotamus
  19. Pygmy hippo

  47. Red deer
  48. Alpine ibex
  49. Polar bear
  50. King penguin

I think that, if we're getting flying birds and marine animals in sequel (which we should) there would have to be a few of both on top of a 50 animal habitat roster to sell the sequel

Yeah, but I figured those would be I'm additom to a starboard 50 habitat animals. That's how JWE2 did it. I know it's not the best comparison, but it's all I got.
Plus, I'm tired from work and not thinking ₛₜᵣₐᵢ𝓰ₕₜ

An important thing to note is that JWE1 only had around 80-ish animals. PZ has 200, and I'd say minimum 1/3 need a significant re-work. That's a lot of resources to put solely into porting over animals for the base game.
Something to keep an eye on is JWE3 releasing later this year. JWE2 has 120-something animals. If all get ported over to JWE3 that could be a sign that all or most of the PZ roster being ported to PZ2.

Here's an interesting thought: What 5 birds requiring aviary mechanics would be best to be in a PZ2 base game?

I'd go with:
  • A Macaw Species
  • An Eagle - I'd do Crested Caracara
  • Bird of Paradise
  • Kookaburra
  • Nicobar Pigeon

At the very least one macaw (probably scarlet), one toucan (probably toco) and the resplendent quetzal, plus a raptor I guess. Kookaburra or any bird of Paradise would be a nice addition to have at least one Oceanian flying bird, but I wouldn't be that surprised if the devs gave us a cockatoo alongside a macaw to be honest.

From what I remember the devs added new modes of locomotion with larger models and then implemented to smaller species (e.g. Giant otter to ASCO, Siamang to lar gibbon)
Therefore I'd say:
  • Scarlet Macaw - a basic parrot model with zygodactyly
  • Bald Eagle - a basic birds of prey model
  • Great Hornbill - a basic non-parrot model with zygodactyly
  • Great White Pelican - a basic waterfowl model
  • Victorian Crowned Pigeon - a basic perching bird model with anisodactyly
