Planet Zoo - Beta Dates Announcement 🐯

Even if you did find a way around it why bother? You'll have to start all over when the game officially launches anyway.

Has that been confirmed?

I know with Planco this was only the case when switching from Alpha to Beta. (which was quite a hustle).

Well, as has been mentioned already, many people will have very little time to play the beta within those two weeks. One way for them to still get a decent sneak peak (which for some is the main reason they buy the deluxe edition), is to just download the Beta when it is released, and just don't reconnect after its over. I don't see how this would hinder the developers in any way, and a larger portion of owners of the deluxe edition still get what they want.

Edit: I'll add that I'm not even making this point mainly for myself. The current beta period is actually perfectly timed for me, as I'll have a much more busy period the weeks after. I just have a hard time seeing why denying access is worth the cost (disgruntled customers), while the benefits seem entirely negligible.

I think that a larger portion of deluxe edition owners would have been happier with a 1 or 2 week head start than a sneak peek.

This discussion is about the beta announcement and there are a variety of discussions going on about it. What's your point?

Yes, you're right. Sorry, these parallel discussions confuse me :p Needless to say I'm entirely on board with a 2 week head start, that'd be great. I don't consider it likely though.

What bothers me about the current plan is that it seems so easy to circumvent for the moderately computer literate, while inconveniencing good faith deluxe edition owners, with no real conceivable benefit for, well, anyone, including the developers.

Why not just say: "okay, the beta lasts until October 8, after that we'll no longer support it, so please don't post any bug reports etc. because we won't read them. Of course, you're free to keep playing it, because who cares, just enjoy the game, dear customer."

A 2-week window this close to launch has nothing to do with us finding bugs so I doubt that Frontier cares if you manage to play longer. A real beta isn't something you pay for, has a separate system set up for properly reporting bugs, is much longer than 2 weeks and is much further ahead of launch to allow time to fix the bugs found. This "beta" is just part of the hype machine. And that's fine, hype is all part of selling games, I get it, but I think this particular bit could have been managed better.

So can I just confirm, if you get the Beta you can play it for 2 weeks then the game is taken away for four weeks before you can play it again?

I think you're right with this and that the wording of the beta is off. I'm hoping to find some useful technical issues for them to resolve but it doesn't take away the fact that 2 weeks is definitely too short for an actual beta.

In regards to starting over; I'm not sure if that's the case but it seems likely.

I wonder if this will indeed be the possibility...

The fact that Frontier hasn't replied about the starting over kinda leaves me to believe that will be the case. They aren't going to want to break any bad news until Gamecom is over. There will need to be a meeting to discuss how to manage this, no doubt, so maybe they do have to wait until after Gamescom to let us know. If there was no need to start over I suspect they'd have told us that by now.

Paul has just commented in a different thread about this topic specifically that they'll have more info on that closer to the beta date. So yes, it looks like it might still be up for discussion.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone! We can't answer all the Beta questions just yet but don't worry, we'll be able to share more specific information nearer the day.

Hi Paul - can you just let us know whether or not the people playing the beta will have to start over at the official launch?

I'd say that the decisions have been made about how this is going to go but they aren't wanting to say anything that might be perceived as negative until they have to.

This is generally true, but let's give them the benefit of the doubt.
Absolutely. Personally, I'm not planning to play the "beta" anyway. It is why I paid for Deluxe but I was hoping for more of a week or two head start with the full game. This is not the full game and it'll be taken away for a month. Whether we have to start over after launch or not, that isn't something that interests me. I've learned my lesson - no more preorders and definitely no more deluxe editions for me. That said, I'm still excited for this game and I'll be there downloading from Steam the minute it launches in November :)
