Title: Palin Investigation Met with Collaboration Offer
Location: Varati (pretty please go global with this!)
Description:

The Voice of Varati today received a communique from Dr Arcanonn – prominent spokesperson for scientific collaboration and head of the controversial Canonn Interstellar Research Group. As GalNet subscribers well know, 'The Canonn' has striven to bring greater awareness of the Unknown Artefact enigma to the Bubble’s countless billions.

A transcription of the message follows:

"Having read with extreme interest recent reports that Dr Palin is conducting research into the 'Unknown Artefact', I wish to extend the hand of friendly cooperation in hopes of helping him in pursuit of this most elusive goal.

There can be no argument that my colleagues, both within and outside The Canonn, are the undeniable experts on this subject at present. Surely, by pooling resources, we can achieve an understanding of these things far more efficiently than by operating separately.

Moreover, there is no justifiable factionalism to be played out here. These things are either benign or malign, but only good research can determine this. So – in a universe where guns are all too often louder than reason – it is clear that science could, quite literally, save the day.

We seek to understand, so as to protect if necessary; or learn, if worthy.

I sincerely hope, as we all surely do, that the latter of these two will be the reality. But if we are wrong, then we, as the fragile human bubble that we are, will certainly need to prepare for the worst.

Hence, I shall be making urgent attempts to effect dialogue with Dr Palin, in the hope that his conscience sees fit to accept this opportunity for fruitful collaboration."

You write beautifully. As one wise woman relentlessly repeated: "Take chances, make mistakes, get messy!"

Title: Forgotten Corners of the Galaxy - Exphiay

Description:

Canopus’ neighbour Exphiay is the subject of our next article. The G type star supports several planets including metal rich worlds, a ringed Y-type dwarf star, two water worlds, and a terraformed planet where the majority of the system’s inhabitants make their home. Life proceeds at a slower pace here, with one year on Discovery taking just over two Earth years, and days 32 hours in length. With an oxygen percentage of 12.8%, visitors to Discovery are warned about the dangers of hypoxia, something which the permanent residents are acclimatised to. Average temperatures are around 1°C so tourists are advised to wrap up in suitable environmental clothing, especially if they plan on venturing outside the equatorial regions.

The system benefits from two large spaceports; Worlidge Hub, in orbit around Discovery itself, and James K Winston, orbiting its rocky moon of Rakhiot. Both support only a skeleton staff, just enough to keep the stations operational. James K Winston runs a refinery operation that processes the ores extracted in nearby Canopus, whilst Worlidge Hub has a service economy to cater to the small numbers of tourists that travel out this far. Most of both stations’ workforces are made up of slaves, controlled as they are by the Canopus Crimson Dragons criminal gang.

Whilst the colony was founded by the substantial funds of Gallant Investment Brokers, criminals have found a safe haven here distant from the rest of inhabited space, with the freedom to operate unimpeded for many years. In recent times they have seen challenges from rivals the Exphiay Crimson Hand Gang, but the Federation Exphiay for Equality party has moved in during the past few months and has rapidly gained in support, citing its goal to make both Exphiay and Canopus; “safe and profitable places to make a living again”.

Title: Covert Transmissions from Emperor's Dawn

Description:

Agents working on behalf of Senator Patreus were surprised recently to be contacted through encrypted channels by anonymous commanders of Emperor’s Dawn. Whilst the Senator’s agents were unable to trace the origin of the transmission, they were able to gather clues about the aims of the mysterious group.

Cmdr Stateira “Starcloak” Eleshenar said: “The Senator says that trouble is an opportunity – well we seized this one. Dawn’s agent made an attempt to convert our people, laying out a recruitment manifesto that confirmed much of our suspicions about Dawn’s ultra-conservatism and the candidate they’re backing. We cannot comment further at this time about the exact nature of the intelligence we have gathered, but the Office of Senator Patreus affirms its commitment to a progressive, forward-looking Empire driven by meritocracy and a culture of enquiry; unhampered by outdated superstition that historically has held the Empire back from reaching its full potential.”

Senator Patreus himself was unreachable for comment, continuing to lead the assault against Emperor's Dawn cells in Maausk and Dakshmandi aboard the Imperial Freedom.

Author's note: This one skirts close but I feel it's more a complimentary side-strand to the story, fuelled by player interactions, rather than anything problematic infringing on the main plot. I deliberately held back mentioning who we think Dawn's candidate is, because I feel sure FD have a big reveal planned - but at the same time it makes sense that official agents would be attempting to dig up and discover information.

So I see that by the description being published in the galaxy map in the CQC beta, that hopefully means the minor faction my group has submitted was approved to be included in game. I'd like to pen a series of articles, probably three, to be published over the next few weeks that is going to fill in the story behind the transition of power from the old controlling faction to the new. Personally I hope I see other factions do the same in the systems they've chosen, as I think it would be cool to read some of the lore that player groups have created around themselves, no matter how small. I should point out too that thisis not entireley off the cuff, it is in fact based on some of the real in-game happenings in the Deneb Algedi system. There was a war a few months ago, and the current controlling faction (with some small help) is now on the cusp of economic boom. So here's the first article:
-
Date: This week
Location: Deneb Algedi, and possibly Youming.
Title: Deneb Algedi Corporation Signals Return to Profitability
Description:
It hasn't been but a few months since war racked the Deneb Algedi system. It was a costly struggle which damaged the economy nearly to ruin, drove people from the system by the hundreds and almost bankrupted the Deneb Algedi Corporation (DAC), who emerged victorious from the ashes and secured the system for the Federation when they seized Burke Port.
-
Today, DAC President Lucien Corbeau was pleased to announce the company has finally achieved a return to profitability. “We are entering a new era of prosperity” he stated during today’s press conference. “Through perseverance, hard work, and a series of timely corporate initiatives, the DAC is proud to declare that we are no longer in the red, and shares in the company are returning to levels they have not seen since before the conflict.”
-
One of the initiatives enacted by the DAC which aided their recovery was their partnership with TL Armoured Transport Company (TLATC), a small but rising conglomerate offering various corporate and industrial services, including extraction, transportation and security services. DAC’s fleet was decimated after the war, so they enticed TLATC to join forces with them through a heavily incentive laden contract. “We would not have agreed to the partnership if we weren’t sure of the potential of the system and our ability to reach the specified goals.” said TLATC Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Khalin Kilrain. “Through vigorous expansion of the DAC’s territory and securing extraction sites around the system, boosting security and augmenting their extraction fleet with our own while securing rights to use their refineries, we’ve helped them complete phase one on their road to recovery. Economic boom is ahead, but there is still much left to do. Gangs of pirates still harass the extraction sites, and there is a communist incursion from Youming which needs to be dealt with. We cannot rest. Not yet.”

Title: Federal Navy Pilots Inspect New Ships

Core Dynamics recently hosted a number of Federal Navy pilots at Navy Central in Eta Cassiopeiae, giving them an opportunity to inspect the company's newest products, the Federal Gunship and Assault Ship, before they are formally deployed.

Pilots were able to try out the ships in purpose-built simulators and take part in a Q&A session with Core Dynamics representatives. Many pilots seemed to be impressed with the vessels and their potential uses.

“The Assault Ship seems like a great balance between speed, manoeuvrability and firepower,” Ensign Isaiah Evanson said. “We’ve been asking for something like this for a long, long time.”

“The Gunship is a tank, for sure. It’s a very adaptable weapons platform. With some smart modifications to suit the pilot’s needs, I’m confident it will be one of the hardiest ships on the market. I’m excited to see what we can do with them.”

TITLE: Kumo Crew Strikes Take Toll

DATE: This Power Play Cycle

Description:

Ever the opportunists, Kumo Crew commanders swept across a number of Lavigny controlled systems in the last 7 days.

They penetrated deeper than any previous skirmishes, and elevated the level of danger Imperial citizens face as a direct result of the Pegasi War.

With turmoil sweeping up billions of Imperial citizens into the ongoing saga, Commanders and tacticians have begun to realise the conflict has escalated beyond previously thought.
Fleet commanders now refer to it in the more encompassing terms of "The Pirate War."

Leaked intelligence indicates that as the week ends Archon will now focus his attention on planets and stations pledged to Aisling Duval.

With Kumo attacks imminent the Empire must decide how to best fortify it's strongholds against further incursion while struggling to stem the momentum of their enemy.

What was once thought to be a simple operation now saps the resources and strength of a thousand worlds.

With the Emperor yet to be announced, and the illegal slave trade growing, it's a distraction few wish to face but all must assume is not going away soon.

Title: Fear the Dread Pirate Archon Delaine

Description:

Hack successful. Initiating message transmission.

Too long has Galnet been marred by scurrilous propaganda spreading misinformation about the Kumo Crew. It is time the galaxy knew the truth. The great superpowers press thousands of commanders into grinding and toiling for them in exchange for pitiful reward, whilst corrupt politicians grow wealthy and fat.

Many of the Crew were like you until “civilised society” took everything they had. There is no justice – but there is vengeance. There is a place where commanders can become strong, and keep the spoils for themselves. In the Pegasi Sector every commander is free, and has a stake in the booty of the Kumo Crew. Prizes are ripe for the plucking, and commanders may do as they please.

To the powers that would seek to oppress us, we are sending a message: fear the dread pirate Archon Delaine.

Title: Conflict Rages on in Maausk

Description:
Maausk has endured a long struggle over the past few days as Commanders from several groups such as the Independent Pilots Consortium, Emperors Grace and other Pilots Federation organizations along with many independent Imperial Commanders fight to expel the Emperor’s Dawn. Members of the Infamous pirate organization The CODE and others have been spotted defending the Emperor's Dawn against the Imperial Offensive.
As the battle rages on in the war torn system of Maausk, many are wondering about the humanitarian crisis it may cause as reports of refugees making their way to safer systems in the hopes that everything will calm down and come to an end soon. Though the course of the war is still unsure, time will tell who will emerge as the victor, but there is still no end sight.

Having a good time? I bet you've worn out your multicannons by now with that lot flying about ;)

Ian & the GalNet team:

Thank you very much for publishing so many articles regarding the Pegasi Sector conflict and especially for including articles written by both sides. It's been a real pleasure to contribute to a story line that has been so player-driven, though we did require some goading during the early days of Powerplay to get into it. It has made the in-game experience much more meaningful for many of us.

CMDR Mikalus and I have been collecting all the published articles that have been written both by Frontier and by players like us about the Pegasi Sector. We've linked to it as source material in the past, but for those who have not seen it, I've included a link below.

Here's the current collection:
From Backwater to Front-Page News: A History of the Pegasi Sector

Hopefully that collection provides useful source material for other writers who are interested in contributing to this storyline.

Thanks again for letting us run away with this unfolding story!

Pirate Purge in Maiphu

Frontier systems are often left neglected, and Maiphu is no exception. A modest system of one outpost, but holding pristine metallic reserves at its second star, Maiphu boasts the rarest of metals. Such riches paired with neglect create a hole to be exploited and the Maiphu Crimson Crew have filled that void, harrassing the Barons of Maiphu who own the single systems outpost. The Barons of Maiphu, a faction of 14,363 people, have proven to be an understadable easy target for the Maiphu Crimson Crew.

Approximately one month ago, the Dukes of Mikunn invested part of their operation in Maiphu to access the pristine reserves. The level of corruption soon became apparent and after the Crew's implementation of a Nav Beacon tax, the Duke Tiberius took it upon himself to eradicate the Crimson Crew from the system, and at no cost to the Barons of Maiphu. Both the Dukes of Mikunn's standing army and mercenary force have entered the system, causing conflict zones to pop up around the system as forces engage the Crimson Crew.

It is suspected that the Guild of Sefrys, a smuggler group born within the newly built station "Mercenary's Respite", is affiliated with the Dukes themselves. Detractors claim that this operation is just a bold attempt to oust local competitors to the Guild, while supporters point to the stability the Dukes have brought to the region in the absence of the major powers.

Location: Quince

Title: Forgotten Corners of the Galaxy: Quince

The orange giant star Quince is reaching the end of its lifespan, and lies some 500 ly north of inhabited space on the galactic disc. Nevertheless, the nascent Empire created a far-flung colony here some 900 years ago, which today supports a thriving populace of approximately 10 million people under the Quince Citizens of Tradition government.

Four of the system’s six planets are abundant in metal reserves, and a station was historically established around the richest of them all, Kosmala Rewards. In modern times Millerport has become a surprising agricultural economy, with large sections of the station turned over to hydroponics, supporting a large resident population.

The two other planets are an ammonia-based water world, and a terraformed Earth-like given the appellation New America. New America’s year is just over 12.5 Earth years in length, with each day lasting roughly 26.4 hours. Oxygen is low at 8.7%, but with a surface pressure of 2.3 human inhabitants are safe from the dangers of hypoxia. With negligible carbon dioxide, but a thriving eco-system, New America is a pilgrimage site for exo-biologists, with much of the planet’s flora subsisting off glucose-rich nutrients, and a huge variety of native fauna to study. Average temperatures are a balmy 26°C, with high humidity creating a tropical ecosystem across much of the planet, and the star system is known for its famed exports of Quince Sweetfruit and other exotic foods. Many tourists visit New America for the breath-taking vistas, or for the challenge of catching a glimpse of the dangerous wildlife, taking transports from Jeffries High station.

Author's note: As FD requires, "Quince Sweetfruit" can be deleted from the text. It's just my humble suggestion for a potential rare good at Quince, based on the system description of exotic food exports and my scientific hypothesis that the plant life could be surviving of nutrients high in glucose since the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is negligible.

Title: Senate Report Reveals Patronage Gains.

A Senate report tracking political trends shows marked swings towards patronage governments throughout Empire space.

The systems of Vodyanes & HIP 20524 highlight the report's key finding – corporations and dictatorships are being swept away by imperial assemblies and societies - replacing boardroom decisionmaking and the diktat of juntas with codes of obligation and mutual respect.

Why many citizens are returning to patron-client relationships is unclear, although the report offers some possible explanations: traditionalism may offer comfort following Hengist Duval's assassination, or escape from anxieties brought on by the Pegasi Pirate War.

Somewhat outlandishly, the report suggests that organised groups of pilots may be responsible for covertly supporting some governments on behalf of certain unnamed powerful individuals.

When approached, a spokesperson for the Chapterhouse of Inquisition, an advocacy group for patrons and feudal lords based in Kamadhenu, was keen to point out the virtues of traditional governance, but declined to comment on the particulars of the Senate report.
