Private servers killed open play

Soooooolution!! Open play for all players online. Solo for player that are off line. Private group for those with 3 or more players. This would allow open play to be even more active then it currently is. Lots of players leave open so they don't have to deal will griefers.

Subjecting Solo to off line player would limit the game of course. No CGs or updates. It would be good for those without internet access to however still play the game.

Sudjecting Private Groups to 3 or more plays would make it limited to just that, a group. You won't be able to throw up a private group without more players. You still keep all the CGs and updates though.

That leave open play to pretty much what it already is. Open to all. But with the small changes it allows open play to gain back more player then before. The players will have to learn how to fight of the griefers, sealclubers, and gankers. Or chose to wait for friend to play in private group or go off line and lose the CGs and other online advantages. I play open and usual don't have much to worry bout.

ok maybe that is a problem that needs to be addressed. I'm guessing the reason that can't be easily fixed is that the game relies heavily on client side to calculate things like damage, hit boxes, and well.....death. Typically a real server side architecture like mmo's charge a monthly fee cause of the server hardware required. Elite doesn't. If you flip that around and rely on your attackers to calculate YOUR death when your game shuts down that opens it up to hacking too much. Also, imagine the game crashing and your ship is persisted and you die cause the game crashed and your ship persisted and you got murdered. That would annoy people waaay more than combat logging.

It's a technical problem I'm guessing.

It connects P2P, servers aren't exactly involved with CMDR's being connected. It is a technical problem with the games architecture. My point was, what you described is already in game and abused.

Often suggested as a "solution". One small problem:

FAQ- Elite: Dangerous
How will single player work? Will I need to connect to a server to play?
The galaxy for Elite: Dangerous is a shared universe maintained by a central server. All of the meta data for the galaxy is shared between players. This includes the galaxy itself as well as transient information like economies. The aim here is that a player's actions will influence the development of the galaxy, without necessarily having to play multiplayer.

The other important aspect for us is that we can seed the galaxy with events, often these events will be triggered by player actions. With a living breathing galaxy players can discover new and interesting things long after they have started playing.

Update! The above is the intended single player experience. However it will be possible to have a single player game without connecting to the galaxy server. You won't get the features of the evolving galaxy (although we will investigate minimising those differences) and you probably won't be able to sync between server and non-server (again we'll investigate).

Note the date of the post (click on "source") - this dates from the beginning of the Kickstarter - and every player bought the game with the ability to experience and affect the single shared galaxy state in each of the game modes.

PVE players need to stop shouting "griefer" every time a CMDR takes them out. Open is dangerous, you're gonna meet alot of different people; some of whom want to pirate you or kill you for lots of different reasons.

PVP players need to put little more effort into their RP. If you're enforcing some kind of blockade, roleplay that and let your target in on the RP. If you're just looking to play the anarchic reaper; shout crazy things at them.

PVE vs PVP; they can co-exist.

In short, lets all make open nice and welcoming while still maintaining the dangerous aspects :D

As a noob I'm now avoiding "open" play like the plague after being attacked and blown up in my noobie sidewinder .

You know, I paid money to enjoy the game and not be someone else's cannon fodder / cheep thrill :-D

So thank you very much FD for given us noobs an option to avoid the PvP players flying round in Million+ Credit ships looking to take out noobs on their first few voyages in their sidewiders.

Very much appreciated! :)

PS - I would also welcome a new option of "Open PvE" which I think could be similar to Destiny's open world play where Guardians are running around the same instances doing their own thing, focused on PvE solo / co-op / random Public Events, and not PvP. Would even be cool if part of the "E" was an alien menace too and not just the regular missions ;-)

Hey thanks for sharing this. I didn't know about this. Then again I didn't know anything about Elite Dangerous either. So you educated me a little and I thank you for that.

Open play is dead in the water.

Private servers lol great idea 

Now xbox live clubs...
Not really you know, when I play I see plenty of players. However I know several that are experiencing more issues with instancing which has turned out to be their ISP having issues with pathing to certain locations, meaning that Elite's P2P suffers.

Personally, I'm glad there's an option to play with others in an indirect way. I like feeling that there are other commanders out there, and I'm glad or interaction isn't just us trading laser fire, of which I have no interest in.

Basically, PvP isn't just shooting at each other.

I'd suggest looking into Mobius. They're a PvE only group.

i play in open 99% of the time, and so do most other cmdrs i know, but i also undertsand peeps not wanting to put up with being ganked by idiots.

seems the only ones complaining are pvp types but maybe they should play cqc or something

I only play open occasionally. My own personal reason for playing mostly solo is because everything in this game is a grind. I really try to mix it up and stay away from the grind but it's impossible if you want to achieve anything in a decent amount of time. Then while I'm grinding a CG, ranks, engineers or whatever else, I really don't want to be bothered by "pvpers", "griefers", "pirates", or whatever they are calling themselves. I don't know, just how I feel. I think they should have just made it open only from the beginning.

This yes, Open PvE it works very well with other games.

I don't have any problems playing open, though currently I am more in group for no specific reason. I do not have any issue that all modes are treated the same way by the galaxy. Its all fine.
I even understand pilots taken out in Open call their killer a griefer. I do understand, really. What I can't understand to fly in open and finally combat log. That's weired becuase clicking the open
button imposes some risk. Submit and run is ok. Fight is ok. Logout with 15s timer is ok. Pull the switch is wrong.

and Open isn't dead at all, but you need to get to places people want to be. Just stepping 10 Ly out of the center leads to massively reduced playerbase.

Miklos

Open had it's chance to play nice and keep the population high...the devs built in a negative feedback loop into the game....and it works. PK players were not fought against early on...they get to play with themselves.....easy prey moved to quieter waters.

Who cares? The modes were here from the beginning, the very beginning of the bloody kickstarter! FD always said that the modes would share a BGS, and would be available to everyone equally.

If you bought Elite Dangerous thinking it was a game where everyone is in the same instance, then all I can say is your pre-purchase research is atrocious.

Even in Open, you only get to see 15 other players, tops... If you thought this was EVE with cockpits then you made one big mistake.

Elite is not EVE. If you want EVE gameplay, guess what? You need to play EVE.

open itself I have no problems with

what I DO have problems with is the multi million credit ships with full mods popping new guys or stupidly inferior targets just to get there rocks off I get to a degree its needed and I understand that

but do you really gotta kill the same guy 5,10,15 times in a row yall can that kind of pvp poisions the game (barring the guy in the kitted FDL you've dropped a dozen times who has the money to afford to pvp with you anyway>

maybe FD can add something that gives people an estimated value of worth of credits and assets that way you can tell if the sidewinder you killed a hundred times is a newbie or a guy with many hundred billions of credits...it might cut down on the greifer remarks, combat level isint always accurate per se

Well if ye believe that then what's the problem? Why are so many crying about open being dead? According to that very extensive poll taking in all the players in the game, undoubtedly very accurate, the solo players are a very small minority. So why all the complaints about it from the pew pew crew? Surely such a minute minority wouldn't be anything to cry about...and yet every day the pvprs are crying about solo and groups. Weird...wouldn't ye agree?

Was in Open Play last night in a far out system and a CMDR pinged me. I replied to say hi. Question, how did the CMDR know I was in the system? I am fairly new, and this is first time I had interaction with live player. Thus, is there a scanning option or some other notification that a player/players are in system when you jump in? Or did he find me via a ship scan?.... though I do not remember a specific scan happening just before being pinged. I know of the notice when scanning ships and seeing the name prepended with "CMDR" mean live player, however, was not sure if there was some other icon, even perhaps on the galactic/system maps which may show if players are in area?

Hollow markers on the scanner indicate that that ship is player piloted.

There are no player heat maps however each system issues a traffic report daily which indicates the number of player ships entering the system.
