Python Mk II & Updates To The Gamestore

I will never understand why you abandoned the consoles. They would be one of your biggest markets. It just doesn't make much sense from a financial perspective.
Maybe they actually couldn’t make the code work for Odyssey on consoles.

cobra mk4 soon ? or are the pre order plebs still gonna cry if the rest of us get it ?
Not me for sure. I've been in favor to finally ending the exclusivity status of that ship for years. And yes, I own one.
I might not cry but I would be saddened by that just as I was reading about the seasonal paint jobs becoming available all year.
And no I don’t own and am not eligible for a Cobra 4.

What an astute observation.

Frontier have come up with a wheeze to give no additional benefit to LEP holders. It is yet another reminder that Frontier products should only be paid for once they have appeared, not in advance.
LEP holders get future expansions for free. That was the deal. Same with Kickstarter backers. This isn't an expansion, it's just an extra ship being added to Odyssey. The Arx price is the same as some ship kits/paint jobs anyway, so really you're getting free early access with some cosmetics.

Or you can wait and get it anyway for nothing...

LEP has had more than expansions previously, including a ship on one occasion.

That article isn't accurate. I checked the Kickstarter pages earlier to confirm what was included (I am a beta backer). Nothing covers this scenario. I've no complaints, I really don't think anyone is losing out on anything.

Yes, extra things have been included previously... But they were freebies rather than things that were owed.

I cant believe folks are getting so worked up over this, every free to play game and its Dog has micro transactions,:ROFLMAO:
Elite isn't a free-to-play game, unless you mean it is Fortnite's dog. Plus there is the distinction for a lot of people between microtransactions that are purely cosmetic, and those that are not.

OK, I went again through the entire article and I noted some feedback and some questions. First let me say that as always I have lots of respect for FDEV and I mean no harm. My feedback will be honest and based on the actual information we've received. Saying that, the article is really vague in some parts, which really just raises more questions than it gives information. Let's start from the beginning. I will provide exact quotes from the article, so that there is no doubt what has been announced, word by word.

1. Changes to engineering.

we will also be making some balancing changes to Engineering. Our focus will be on making Engineering more accessible and predictable, allowing you to focus on your ship build rather than the materials needed.
  • Does that mean we will only get updated SHIP engineering, and FOOT engineering will not be changed at all? If so, this is very weird decision IMO. Ship engineering really isn't so bad currently and we've already had an overhaul of it.
  • What does it mean it will be "more predicable"? It already is, that's precisely what the last update to this game loop focused on.
  • Same goes for material gathering. We now get 3 mats for 1 collected. We can exchange all standard materials at the traders.
  • All this while - the FOOT engineering is very time consuming and it relies almost entirely on RNG and the materials required for engineer unlocks have extremely low drop rate. The modifications to both armour and guns are permanent (IMO the most ridiculous decision ever made in the history of Elite Dangerous development).
  • IMO it is FOOT engineering that requires urgent rework, not the ship one.

2. ARX Store.

many of you have identified that the store has become hard to navigate and that it is difficult to find the content that you really want, with this in mind we will be refreshing the store to provide a better experience for our players.

  • Cool, but "many of us"? I frequent these forums and other social media daily and honestly in the grand scale of community feedback I don't think I would place this request in the even top 10 of stuff that "many of us" would like to have as a priority.

Starting in May 2024, you will notice a change in how we approach the gamestore – which will also include ARX pricing adjustments for some of our cosmetic items, alongside new product types which are detailed below.

  • What does "adjusted" mean? I realise some stuff will be made cheaper and other more expensive, but overall - will the pricing increase or decrease?
  • Of all the new products that you could put in the store you chose... early access to new ships and pre-built ships? Again, I've not seen anyone asking for that kind of stuff, ever. But I've seen "many of us" asking for more varied clothing (not armours), more shipkits, more fleet carrier customisation items. These are the 3 type of items that I've seen being asked for the most. None of them seem to be considered for adding to the store.

3. Early access to new ship variants.

Starting with the Python Mk II, we are pleased to announce that this will be available in game for Odyssey players on 7 August for credits at Shipyards across the galaxy. However, if you cannot wait until then you can get 3-month early access to this ship on 7 May from the store for 16250 ARX.

  • I don't actually have any issue with that. This is a good move IMO, as invevitably some of us will use this opportunity and FDEV will receive some money. I just hope this money will go towards further development of the game.
The Python MkII becomes available for all Odyssey owners, including LEP owners, on the 7 August.
(as per THIS POST)

  • While personally I am really not bothered about this, overal it is... not nice to all those people that paid for LEP. Technically noting is wrong - LEP owners still get all the expansions and new content for free. But it would be simply a nice gesture towards them to grant early access to Python Mk2.

Non-Odyssey owners will be able access ship variants from the store for ARX.

  • This is very bad decision. This is pure Pay 2 Win (broad term, let's not get into the semantics of what it means, I think we all get the jist). It gives access to new content only to those who can afford it and putting it behind a real-money paywall. Yes, the same can be said about the Odyssey DLC, but in this case you get the entire DLC with LOTS of new content, which is in my opinion fair and understandable. But this decision really leaves very bad taste in my mouth, especially after what David Braben was saying all these years ago about the real money stuff being only cosmetic. I am very sad and very disappointed to see Frontier's decision to go this way, as this sets a very slippery slope precedence and it's going back on what was said to us 10 years ago. It is not really something I hoped I would see on the 10th anniversary of the game release :( Very strongly opposed to this idea.
  • Will the Horizon players be able to buy early access too or will it only be available from 7th August? If yes to EA - will it cost extra or will it be included in the price of ship access?

4. Pre-built ships.

This is by far the most controversial change and the one I am not happy with the most and again very disappointed and strongly against it. Just like the above, not something I thought I'd see on the 10th anniversary :(

Pre-Built Ship packages will offer Commanders the opportunity to purchase ships that have been given a significant upgrade from their base models. A ‘Pre-built’ ship package will include instant-access to a pre-fitted ship, a ship kit, and a paintjob – and will typically be themed to match an activity within the game. For example, if you’re looking to jump into the current AX conflict against the Titans, the AX Combat Jumpstart package will give instant access to an Alliance Chieftain with all the necessary modules to go straight into the action within the maelstrom.

  • What does "significant upgrade" and "base model" exactly mean?
  • Will they include weapons or just core, optional and utility modules?
  • Are all modules going to be engineered? If so, to what grade?
  • What about the insurance cost of these ships?
  • Will a player be able to lose such a ship permanently? (Let's say a new player spends money to get AX equipped ship, accidentally turns off the shields and boosts into the station wall, while not having money for rebuy)
  • Will these "significantly upgraded" ships be available for new players in starter systems, considering the "instant access"?

This is my feedback and my questions.

Overall - I don't really mind most of the above. Apart from the Horizons players being able to buy something that non-paying colleagues will not have access to, and the pre-built instant ships, per my comments.

I have listed the above items in the order that I consider least to most controversial for me personally. Let me also reiterate that all of the above is based on the very limited information that was provided to us in the article. I hope that we can get at least some answers on tomorrow's live stream. Hopefully maybe even sooner in this thread before the stream.

Does money not count if given upfront?
Not really, if you buy a decent game off steam, lets say Horizon Zero Dawn, that's it, that's the game unless you buy the new expansion.
You buy Elite and then Ody and you get constant content updates, free stuff, narrative, CGs etc etc for free, other games you have to pay a subscription for that.
Fdev have to make money, that's clear, which do you prefer?

How exactly do you think Elite has been making money in the past? My payment for the game stops at the point of purchase, yes. I am not the only person paying for Elite's development, though - the idea is that improving the game attracts more customers. You're saying that a bike shop would have to charge a subscription for the bikes or go out of business because I only bought one bike once.

Considering that the cost for the Odyssey DLC and the needed ARX for a python mk2 seem to both be around a tenner, it'd be a bit foolish to buy the python mk2 instead of the entire DLC for the same price.. :)
