Ships Python Owners' Thread

So...this is going to sound weird... I'm kind of on the fence about the Python.
 WAIT! PLEASE PUT DOWN YOUR TORCHES & PITCHFORKS...!

I pretty much stick to running missions / passengers and the occasional attempt to take down pirates who try to interdict me. I do currently own a Python but she's been sitting in dry dock... Because I recently rediscovered how much I love flying the Cobra Mk III. I spent a lot of time in the AspX then went back to the Cobra, and now I find myself wondering if the Python is 'too much ship' for my play style. I haven't seen all that many missions (yet?) requesting a cargo haul in the hundreds of units and I found myself left with failed missions here & there if I stacked too many because I'd run out of available time and the missions would expire before my next play session. I love the Python's design but I'm wondering if I should be considering a different mid-sized ship, if there's one that would be a better fit.

Cobra 3 is awesome. Python, on the other hand, is hands down the best mission runner and once you're friends with a faction there are plenty of over 100 tonne jobs available. For the Python to be at its most enjoyable, get the best dirty drives you can muster. For efficiency in missionrunning involving cargo, you won't do better than the Python.

It got me to Elite in Trade, just running missions. Lots of missions. I can only carry 144T of cargo as she is currently configured, but I have it packed to the gills more often than not. And the fact that she can obliterate any NPC that interdicts her is just icing on the cake. I have only owned one ship that can kill more efficiently than my Python, and that is my Corvette. :D

But, if the Python is not for you, then it's not for you. That's what is great about having so many choices of ships and their configurations. I skipped right over the Cobra (now YOU put down the torches & pitchforks... ;) )early on, but there was a time when I was perfectly happy flying small amounts of cargo around in a very well armed and armored FAS. That's if you have the fed rank to get one.

I hear that the Cobra Mk III is a really good all around ship, so why not stick with that until you really feel like you've outgrown it?

They all have their uses. I wouldn't sell either of mine.
Also, my Python has maybe 40 tonnes or so available. It is a pretend hauler, with many teeth.

Have fun with your new ship. As you make a little more credits and can start tuning her with upgraded modules, you'll like her even more. :)

Thank you! To be honest, I sold my ship, and bought an AspX again because it felt like too much! After thinking about it, though, I realized that the direction I was going in was going to lead to getting a Python anyway (great cargo, solid defensive capability, etc), so I sold the AspX (it was a busy day in the shipyards lol), and bought the Python. Now I'm teaching myself how to get a handle on it like I did the AspX.

I actually visited The Great Crab Nebula mission in Epsilon Indi, where the moon makes a full orbit every 15 seconds? I missed the first time, went back in the second, and actually landed my Python on the little moon. It was the weirdest, most awesome thing ever. The Python handled like a charm. Now I'm running it as a passenger/cargo ship, though I wish the jump range was better than 15.99ly, even with a 5A FSD. I'm not sure what I can do about that, because I want my passenger/cargo capability.

Like Cmdr Ceekay mentions, engineer the FSD drive.
Got mine on a grade 5 with not amazing rolls but got already 32ly jumprange.
Benefits for passenger missions but trading as well.

You only need the first engineer (Farseer) to really transform your Python into something special, and for a long time, she was the only one I had unlocked, as she had everything I needed.

With her, you can upgrade your FSD to around the 30Ly range, (depending on other things of course), and can put G3 dirty drives on her which will really wake her up handling and speed wise. She's a completely different ship after that. You can even do a G1 upgrade to your power plant to give you a bit more power for your Python's other toys.

I hate the Engineers and the forced/intentional time sink they represent, which is why I only have a few, but Farseer is the one you need to turn your Python into something special. You will thank me if you do it. :D

While not my best piloting, I had fun tonight. This is my Python as Currently setup, at the CG in HaZ Res. I engaged a wing of three NPCs when the Clipper came at me. It was a fun fight:

I recently succumbed to this club...

So far I'm on the fence with it. It on paper should trounce my Dropship etc but I just don't get the same feel of it. Yes it's faster, jumps further, hauls more cargo, shoots more deeps but....

Maybe it just my dropship has been moderately engineered or that I've simply more stick time in it but I prefer my Dropship. That may change as I work through and engineer up more stuff. Currently only have gr3 DD and gr5 FSD range...

Looks pretty cool though.

Apparently the ship kits add too much mass and cause a lot of drag ;), TBH that's the first decent one I've seen on a Python makes it more aggressive looking.

Similarly engineered the pitch rate is close (around 40 @ 4 pips), the Python rolls better but the FDS has around 40% better yaw rate, that will make crossing target tracking easier as you don't have to roll into the pitch axis to keep centred on the target (the FGS has even better yaw around 55% more than a Python), also the increased cargo capacity adds a lot of mass when fully loaded so that impacts on agility on top of that the Python (pitch 31 @ 2 pips) is more affected by pips than the FDS (pitch 34 @ 2 pips) using similar thrusters.

Nice! [up]

It's a different ship, and requires you to learn how to fly it. I've not owned a Dropship, but I've owned a FAS a time or two. The FAS was more manuverable, true, but once I learned how to fly and keep her nose on target, my Python can kill much quicker with her three large G5 efficient beams and two PAs. :)

It's all about personal preference, but give it a bit of time to see if you figure out how to fly her. You can always go back to the dropship if it doesn't work out. :)

I still love my Python. It has been interdicted lately by a Fer-de-Lance but stood well in the fight until help arrived.

So looking at the agility numbers it's not such a clear choice then.

However!

When you can load as much cargo as you can and still way out jump and out boost the python clearly wins. I just have to see if I get the feeling from it :)

I'm gonna give it a red hot go!

The agility numbers are a guide certainly and if the PD was set at 4 pips to engines the Python is decently agile but unless you fit 5 x MC (rapid fire are devastating but don't last long) you'll need 2 - 3 pips to weapons some of the time, it's just the Pythons thrusters are more sensitive to pip settings than other ships.

I've been having huge fun in this build it's meant to be like the Defiant from DS9 (plasma/photon torpedos kinda ;)), great with Asp size and up but it's a pain against small stuff.

I'm in the same boat (somewhat literally): Spent a lot of time in my AspX, bought a Python and put a few upgrades into it, but then I went back to tooling around in the Cobra. I may just not yet have gotten to the point where I need the Python's capacity for stacking missions -- or my playstyle is just different. I think I may have to look into one of the smaller medium-sized ships.

New owner (second dance with the Python, but I don't figure a quickie buy/sell early on counts). Having been in the Conda (still have her in dry dock for repairs) for what seems like forever, it's a treat to get back to outposts and not worry much about the mailslot gambit. Will use for Fed ranking and general mucking about, maybe try passenger missions for the first time.

Trader fitted, ripped some bits out of my FAS and engineered her to 35.7 max LY and something like low twenties loaded with cargo. High 300's boost makes me chuckle too.

Named her "Spring Snowstorm".

Just got some G5 DDs on the Python, speed = 352 m/s, boost = 458 m/s, Pitch / roll / yaw = 43.79 / 135.91 / 15.10, Jump Range = 29Ly, this is a fully multirole PvE fit too.

Overall handling very nicely, and a world away from a stock Python :D

Nice. Very jealous as well. I'll just have to suffer with my G3 DDs, thanks. ;)

Same here gr3 DD's and I get a boost of about 412m/s so I generally happy with it now. 21ly jump fully load with 196t of cargo so again happy.

It's more thank likely a keeper for a lot of stuff...Not my favourite yet but I can see the appeal and seeing as I like to have a minimal number or ships this will be a good aditions to my small fleet.

Now if I could get a hybrid child of the Dropship, Keelback and Python then I'd be one super happy camper. Oh and with the looks of the Cobra IV!
