We need new educational pieces, be it signs, skeletons, etc.

Sounds like my dream zoo game so far... :) I think I'll relax a bit from this thread.

I assume the new features of Planet Coaster 2 will also be to Planet Zoo 2, so ill not mention them here.

-Reworking exhibits: In their current form they just go against what PZ is about. Being able do build everything as big, small or beautiful as you want.
-Making the game more "Small animal friendly": Planet Zoo is very biased towards large animals, both in the animal roster aswell as the system, pieces and enrichment items. So i really would like more small climbing pieces, smaller enrichtment items and so on
-Option to turn off the hitbox of building pieces: Its really annoying how much space some items take away from the traversable area. This would allow to have animals go through doors that are not obnoxiously oversized aswell as more interesting and realistic habitat design without the animals being unable to take a single step.
-Full animal customizability in Sandbox: If i want a max size elephant i dont want to buy and sell 20 animals to finally find one. Add a option in sandbox where you can chose the exact size, scaring, color variation and color morph you want to have.

Oh, thought of another thing from Zoo Tycoon 2.

Animal rankings, so when you start your zoo you can’t just buy everything and place it down without consequence (besides money). If you just start your zoo, you may have to build up to getting the big ticket famous animals. It adds some challenges to Franchise zoos, and gives you some general rewards for making better and better zoos.

+1 I really want franchise to actually feel like a challenge but connected to the internet. I want it to basically be an interconnected zoo tycoon 2 challenge mode. Maybe only thing I’d add is that as your franchise gets bigger it is easier to start a new zoo and you can still transport animals to a new zoo but you’ll be relying on your bigger zoo until this new zoo gets fame to adopt animals for itself

something similar to this would be pretty cool, although I think you should have access to some big ticket famous animals to start with because lots of lower budget zoos still have a big cat or two as well as other famous animals like zebra, lemurs and flamingos

Oh yeah I was thinking some of those guys, but the elephants and pandas would require a zoo with 4+ stars.

Welcome all to the features meta-wishlist for planet zoo 2, the hopeful sequel to planet zoo! Similar to my free-update wishlist, this will be the place to clearly suggest your desired features for the sequel as suggesting in the very active speculation threads is a bad way to allow your suggestions to be seen by frontier. This meta-wishlist plans to include pretty much anything you can think of, feature wise, new scenery pieces, improved mechanics, brand new animal systems for birds or aquariums... whatever you want!

Guidelines of the Meta-wishlist:
  1. You can suggest animals only if they are backed up with a mechanic for housing these animals, ideally we want to focus on the features rather than the animals themselves due to the word limit of these threads.
  2. Everyone has unlimited votes but duplicates will be monitored
  3. Please only suggest features related to planet zoo, any inappropriate features or spam will be ignored or reported if needed
  4. Don't suggest bug fixes for planet zoo 1
  5. There is no restriction on unpopular forum ideas like marine mammal mechanics or features related to them, don't feel pressured by others to hold back any personal wants in these areas
  6. Liking another post is not counted as a vote, if you want to add a vote to another person's suggestion, quote their message and let me know you want to add a vote to that suggestion
  7. If suggesting a major animal additions such as aviaries, aquariums, individual animal personalities etc, it would be appreciated if you can provide an explanation of how these would work for your ideal implementation of the feature. Just a vague "give me birds" doesn't help everyone else understand how you want birds in a sequel.

The wishlist tables will be created once enough people contribute on the wishlist.
Birds. A lot of them. Flying and not.
Mesh set or modular aviary building system
Aquariums, small and big tanks.
Day and night lightning cycle with correlated animal behaviour and improved indoor lightning for nocturnal houses (or a system for nocturnal houses).

Aviaries: I don't think we'll be able to make fully free-form aviaries, because that might screw up the navigable area of flying birds. Instead, what Frontier could do is make it so you build a habitat and then have the option to add a mesh roof, which is then automatically made. Ideally this would also work if the barriers of the habitat were null barriers.
Item scaling: Speaks for itself really.
Improved path system: I can't really put into words how to fix the path system, but PC2 is improving it, so maybe PZ2 can do the same.
All terrain paints in all biomes: One of my most wanted features, I don't understand how this isn't already a thing.
Plant brush: Another thing that PC2 has, I see no reason why PZ2 can't have it too.
Custom map skirts: You should be able to import an image, or potentially a collection of images, to make custom map skirts.
More maps: Why don't we have a city map? PC had it.
Better animal market: In sandbox, have more than four of each animal show up in the market at a time. Maybe make it a setting. In franchise, put stricter limits on how much players can charge for animals to combat in-game inflation.
Sandbox animal gene editor: It doesn't make much sense logically, but this is sandbox mode. We should be able to get animals with the exact gene percentages and physical appearance we want. Want a zoo with all albino animals? Or all animals with a 0% size gene? Now you can!
I can't believe I forgot something that's been on my wishlist for years!
Modular exhibits: Exhibit animals now have space requirements, which can be rectified with modular exhibits. The current exhibit size is now considered 4x4, with the smallest possible exhibit space (for the smallest exhibit animals like the Danube Crested Newt), being 1x1. Assuming the Green Iguana and Lesser Antillean Iguana don't become habitat animals in the sequel, they would require a minimum exhibit space of 8x8, basically four standard exhibits connected to each other.

There is also the other free update meta wishlist that has I think 600 or so already suggested features for the first game but can easily be used as a reference to look at a wide variety of big and small features for the game. The exhibit overhaul including modular customisation was the most requested feature there but I can't see it being the most requested this time around.

I mean...just look at Coaster 2. We'll get that pathing system, and we'll get that foliage brush. I feel like we can take those features as a given. The item scaling, possibly - though maybe not for climbable objects, as that would depend on how they handle climbing in the sequel. It looks like shops/facilities will function largely the same.

This wishlist feels kind of premature, if only because we don't know the full scale of what's different in Planet Coaster 2 yet. Once that game has been released and hundreds of people are playing it and all the features are fully laid out, then we'll have a pretty good idea of what PZ2 is going to look like. Then we can discuss other features we want aside from those core functions.

In a perfect world, an aviary system which utilises the same stamp and free-draw system used for the PC2 paths and pools would be amazing.

I already have a decently long list of features I'd like, some with the basics of how I would like them to work (need to go through them all and figure out what is and isn't that realistic for the game). But I think I'll wait until the first few major updates for PC2 to come out (so probably spring or summer) to see what is possible with the new engine and what limits it has. But I'll follow along for now c:

Yeah maybe this wishlist is just a bit early but likely in a month we will know the extent of the pc2 features and holding back the majority of known features won't affect the wishlist that much. Looking at the suggestions here so far, there isn't much overlap between each game as people are acknowledging that pc2 features are kind of a given to a sequel.

This to me is far more important than what animals get carried over/left out from PZ1 to PZ2, as the Franchise Gameplay aspect is why I play zoo games. So most of these are geared towards Franchise Mode:

1. Pathing System Fix - no more explanation needed
2. Overhaul to the "Animal Hitbox" to allow much better travel within an enclosure.
3. Hard Shelter update - I know I'm not the only one who puts a giant shelter into an enclosure - only to be told it's not enough somehow. This needs to be decreased. Also, for shy animals, add a "backstage" requirement that is completely hidden from the public(could be either a building like real zoos have, or could use natural items - foliage/rocks).
4. Random events - easily my favorite update. This should be a check box that the player could disable if they want. It would add disasters, like floods or fire, that would affect your zoo. Also, animal opportunities like housing animals rescued from circus/private owners, or taking in(whether permanent or temporary) animals from a zoo in financial trouble. That type of thing.
5. Conservation opportunities - rescuing and potentially rehabilitating local wild animals who are injured. Housing "problem animals". Add in challenges for your zoo to supply X number of a species for potential reintroduction.
6. Exhibit overhaul - additional sizes along with at least partial customization.
7. Change to Franchise Gameplay - Particularly the financial system. Current PZ is much too similar to a theme park. Guests shouldn't need to eat/drink/buy merch every 3 minutes. 1 restaurant, 2 food courts, 1-2 gift shops and the occasional vending stand are more than enough even for a good sized zoo. $$ should come mostly from guest donations, but also from prominent donors who will donate more money based on your "conservation rating" - which would increase with you having rarer species and participating in conservation activities.
8. Greatly increased education - Ambassador animals, animal-guest interactions, better petting zoo mechanics, and a wide range of educational props/activities. I was always a bit surprised that the base PZ game had so little of this, and it took a few years before the free updates began improving this by bits and pieces.
9. Make the Animal Market easier to navigate - also, I don't play Sandbox, but the idea that you don't have the option to find any type of animal with any stats you want is crazy to me.

There's a lot more I'm sure I could think of, but I don't want to bore y'all with a full on essay.

Here's my living document of a feature wishlist:
  • Better pathing system
  • Letting us use every terrain texture on every map (not just ones specific to a map based on region/biome)
  • Let us acquire animals without a trade center (biggest pet peeve so far)
  • Time passing more slowly (let's say 1 hour per in-game year)
  • Not re-selling old animals at a premium price. If they can't port everything over to a new engine on day-one, take your time and give it out for free
    • Better model: take a page from Warhammer games. They way they work is that DLC purchased for the older game can be registered to work for newer games. To give a PZ example, players who already bought the Australia Pack for PZ1 would be able to use the building pieces and the 5 animals from that DLC pack in PZ2 without any extra costs. This is a very pro-consumer strategy and I strongly hope that Frontier looks into this model for PZ2 - added October 23rd
  • Egg-laying for birds, other reptiles, and platypuses
  • Toggle for rocks to count towards rock terrain (I think I was the only person who liked this feature when it was first added)
  • Rework both iguanas into Habitat Animals, they deserve it so dearly
  • News update on how individuals released into the wild are managing (a very underrated feature from ZT3 IMO)
  • A proper first-person Zookeeper Mode, where you can walk around into habitats and manually tend to basic needs
  • Driveable buggies to navigate your sprawling zoo on foot quickly - added between October 9th-20th
  • Modular exhibits to make them more dynamic and impressionable - added between October 9th-20th
  • Add a system for herbivores to graze/browse on plants in their habitat. Incompatible plants make them sick, giving a gameplay incentive for them to be picky about plants in their habitat - added between October 9th-20th
  • Hybridisation - 2 different species being able to produce a hybrid offspring if both their welfare needs are satisfied (and have produced hybrids together in real life). The hybrids will yield a lot of popularity, but also cannot breed; will be far more prone to illnesses; attract protesters; mark down your zoo for poor conservation practices during inspections; and cannot be released into the wild (and are instead sold like domesticated species) - added October 21st
  • Have guests ragdoll away when an dangerous animal runs into them after an escape, akin to what happens in Planet Coaster - added October 30th
