Quality of Life Improvement: Input LAT/LON Co-ords and have a Surface Waypoint appear, similar to the surface scan mission Waypoint.

My theory is that any potential use of navigation didn't enter their plans at that time. I hate to repeatedly suggest a lack of imagination, but...

They built a truly impressive, somewhat scientifically explainable, universe. Filled it with amazing stars, beautiful planets, fantastic nebulas. Then tied it all together with simplistic fetch-or-shoot game mechanics. It would only make sense that all the incredible effort they threw at creating landable planets would fit the same mould. Planet surfaces were just another endpoint to collect things from or shoot things at.

They gave you navigation to the settlements. That's all you'd ever need. The annoying blue dot or the better sound-tracking play to find POIs and the like didn't rely on navigation as such because they were always in random locations. The thought that someone would want to go to a specific location that wasn't a settlement? More than once?! Unthinkable.

I'm pretty sure the lat/lon readings were put there just to make the interface look more interesting rather than any thought of potential usage.

Of course, this doesn't explain why nothing has been done since the first development. Particularly since FD has put their own non-settlement sights around the place to visit.

And then again, the answer could simply be...

I totally understand the reasons behind procedural generation of content in the game, but it seems the ideas that gave us wonderful galaxy to explore, with planets, asteroid belts and space stations and believable economy didn't extend further. Many of our interactions with the game world seem to be controlled by a random number generator without much finesse. When I'm out there, gazing at the views, it's difficult to see why they didn't have imagination to make the rest of the experience breathtaking. Perhaps it's lack of resources, perhaps it's some sort of rigid vision not allowing for more creativity and imagination. Whatever the reason, it's quite sad, really. The galaxy, the background, I love. The particulars of our interaction with it make me grind my teeth or cause facepalm moments.

They do improve bits and bobs, so there is some progress, but things like planetary navigation shouldn't be left rudimentary for so long. Two years since we have landable planets and yet still we don't have a proper interface to do so. Interface they have in game already (we can add bookmarks). It's disheartening.

Here's hoping they will eventually fix this "feature" and improve on their communication with the players' community.
 
I really hope FD will implement this soon. Shouldn't it be possible to have a crosshairs pointer when zooming in on planets in order to search and lock certain coordinates on a planet? I mean half of what is needed is already there. It just needs a few extra tweaks. I am very grateful to all 3rd party devs, but these mechanics should be part of the game. Same goes for trading apps (now partially implemented) and Powerplay which is a incomprehensible mess.

Would you please consider the implementation of the feature discussed in this topic and let us know if Frontier is or isn't going to implement this in the feature?

Well, since my last post Frontier or anyone haven't given any answer. This proves again Frontier is not behind it's players.
 
There are a lot of good ideas here!

I really hope you guys put these suggestions on the Focused Feedback for exploration on June 18th. That's where FDev really starts paying attention.

Trust me, with the participation this thread has, I bet FDev is looking at it. Just because they don't reply, doesn't mean they aren't looking. Don't be surprised to see a few of the ideas posted here to show up in the 18th of June. Please keep this thread going! Post daily replies to specific ideas on this thread. The more traction, the more attention it will get.
 
I keep trying this for several months now but it just doesn't seem to get any feedback whatsoever from Frontier, come on guys if you read this at least give us some reply or make this thread a sticky. If there is one thing you can truly do for the elite dangerous pc & console community then it's implementing this feature. I'll add just so much more fun to the game. Imagine that people could easily find all of the crash sites and explore that lore of elite dangerous on-the-way rather than looking up and learning-the-hard-way the method of using the coordinate system which is terrible to do in the xbox one version. The community asks (look at the number of replies in this forum and form your own conclusions on whether this ammount of replies represents a fair amount of the community.) Frontier to implement this feature for the future sake of the game, so it's more attractive to new players. Believe me starting in the feta a couple of years ago with 100k and no information to look up on how to do stuff seemed like an impossible task at the time but nowadays I'm happily exploring the Elite: Dangerous Universe with my 'Conda. She may be a bit outdated but she is the original princess of the game ;-)

I hope that you will read this message Frontier, and find it in your harts to at least let us know that you are working hard on the future expansions of the game and foremost, that you DO listen to the community.

I mean, this is a feature that had to be implemented from the beginning. I was looking at the planetary map the other day noticing there is room for waypoints. And in fact the game-mechanics for the waypoint coordinates are already in the code i.e. the rotation of the planet by the tumbstick on the controller and the mouse cursor on the pc. The only thing that a developer has to do is to make a gui element to show these coordinates and let them display them in-game just like a planetary outpost or settlement. I guess it's 15 min. of work, the only thing is that this game is not open-source or even availible for anyone to mod on the console. You should have developer options on the xbox one to adjust the game code of Elite: Dangerous if that is the way that you want your game to be developed. Writing about this lets me think that the future of game development is by the gamers itself. I recent day we see this as modding and is widely implemented on the pc, Microsoft needs to be able to open their development enviroment together with game developers like Frontier to let the gamers decide and build-on what they want to have in game.

Just imagine a option where gamers can vote on the best option they want to have in game made availible by gamers themself. You mod something- submit it in game - gamers vote on the different moddable options- they get build in the game. This would be a beginning but not near enough the ultimate example namely a free-moddable environment for xbox one. Big game coorporations like Microsoft need to be able to let go off their monopoly and let the gamers build what they want, they just have to provide the engine and a platform.

Not only that - have you ever looked at the planetary map after having landed on the planet?

There is a blue marker pointing to where your ship is! ;)
 
I support this idea. Waypoints, especially one's you could set yourself, would be great. In system map you can pan over a planet's surface, might as well allow a target marker to be added from here onto a specific set of coordinates.
 
Keep on posting peeps, we NEED to get this to Frontier. They haven't responded yet so how can we know they are doing anything about this?!

I went out to a barnacle the other day to farm some meta alloys to unlock some tech broker cookies... finding the site by lat/lon was so ANNOYING!
