Quest 3 - How do you use Virtual Desktop with non-SteamVR ED

Aaaah, so that's your issue...

Yes, that would be a polling order thing: ED checks for the presence of Oculus's runtime first, and uses that if available (I have used this behaviour of the game's in the past, to run ED on an Oculus CV1, and another game on a HTC Vive at the same time, on the same computer :p).

You could try to stop OVRService using the Windows Task Manager, to take it away from ED's sight, but that would probably mean it's not there for Virtual Desktop, either...

Is there a method to annhil detection of this service ? I need Oculus Link for Quest 3

No idea, I'm afraid, but I get the sense there are plenty of Quest users using VD, so hopefully one of them will chime in...

So VD's wifi link is that much better than Oculus Link (EDIT: ...that it's worth not just running natively)?

I ended up buying Virtual Desktop for my Quest 3 after reading lots of chuck-ups for it and how much better running it was than AirLink, god-like visuals etc. and after lots of tinkering and faffing I managed to get it looking about on-par with AirLink. Streaming performance I’d gauge at being slightly worse than AirLink for me at the same visual level. I certainly noticed hiccoughs while playing through VD.

It has some handy features if you want to play flatscreen games on a virtual screen, but aside from that I wish I’d saved my 18 quid 😁

For me I want to launch ED with VirtualDesktop-OpenXR (https://github.com/mbucchia/VirtualDesktop-OpenXR) but Elite dangerous launches without it and without openXR Toolkit (1.3.8). My other games like IL2, FS, Serious Sam VR runs with it jsut fine. How to fix this problem ?

Occulus Link > OpenComposite > VirtualDesktop OpenXR (StandAlone) > ED
I launch the shortcut I have made ("C:\Program Files (x86)\Frontier\EDLaunch\EDLaunch.exe" /vr) on my desktop while Virtual Desktop is running (not from within Virtual Desktop itself) - it works every time. I made another shortcut the exact same, but minus the /VR on the end to play non-VR.

Make sure Open Composite is set to OpenXR of course. For the Virtual Desktop Streamer settings, I use AV1 10-bit (quest 3) for my preferred Codec, adaptive quantization enabled, OpenXR Runtime set to VDXR. I don't know if this is unique to Elite Dangerous or not, but this works for me. Power up the Quest 3, launch Virtual Desktop, launch ED from the VR designated desktop shortcut.

I often get the sense that whenever any of us think we've found some magic bullet or other, half or more of our impressions is placebo effect. :7

Yeah if you use non-linked method with wireless. Poor performance comparing Oculus API...
You can't if you use the special VD with Oculus Link from mbucchia 100% functionnal in litteraly ALL games but not in ED.

I have no issues running 90 FPS comfortably and I don't get any crashes like I used to when connected direct and using Steam VR. 🤷‍♂️

Read old messages, when your are un wire mode YOU CAN'T use SteamVR with Quest 2/3. ED forces the use of Oculus API and not starts SteamVR at all.

I used Steam VR BEFORE I got Virtual Desktop, and It kept crashing. I moved to VD and it's been gravy since. Pretty straightforward if you follow the instructions in the thread, so what's your problem? Read old messages...dude. Pay better attention.

I don't want to use Wireless connect, it's just crazy and technically false to beleive wireless connect is better than USB (3,1gbps) connect is better. I can use the special mod of mbucchia to have a correct OpenXR with VDXR Wire Mode IN ALL VR GAMES (IL2, ETS2, Serous Sam VR etc...). I didin't want beleiving ED devs are just the only ones forcing Oculus API in wire mod with all VR hardware from META/FACEBOOK but that is.

Thanks but I will just manage with Oculus API in wire mod without OpenXR. Except in stations and in a little numbers of conditions I've a solid 90fps with x1,5. Tried with Virtual Desktop and that's not the same deal.

I use steam link with a isolated wifi 6 router. The PC connects to it via 2.5Gbps ethernet port and the Q3 connects to the router via Steam link. Data throughput to the Q3 is 2400Mbps. Runs great, 90fps , no drop outs, easy hook up.

And for those just wants a "Plug n Play" solution and not wasting money for buying more hardware for just what... For devs don't want to fix something all other games all other teams supports...
I don't want to buy a dedicated router for: "ED devs don't want to not forcing Oculus API in quest link"...

Understand the prob, I buyed ED long time ago when this game was in test phase...
Bought the 2 DLCs. Tricked by Odyssey with devs saids: We will support VR on ground later. Later ???? Damn we have to wait forever...
And can't use what I can do with plenty of other games...

I have a dedicated router for seamless VR everything ... not ED. It's as plug and play as it gets. You sound like you've got the most convoluted setup possible. You either want to fix the problem or just complain. I wish you well.

I don't use a dedicated router, just made sure it was set to only use WiFi 6. I get 2.5 Gbps at 90 FPS consistently. No Steam VR, and just Virtual Desktop with Open Composite doing it's thing. If my Q3 is connected to anything at all, it's for power.

Why did you get a dedicated router? Just turn on the WiFi hotspot on your PC. It's a lot less hassle, cheaper, doesn't need extra power and you don't have the additional network hop that your router gives you. If you don't have integrated WiFi, just buy a PCIe WiFi NIC or USB one. Also, the hotspot powers off automatically when you're not using it.

Because I can afford it and it's easy. My PC doesn't have a wireless connection, because that's not necessary. It's not an "extra network hop". It can't be any easier than to have a setup you never have to touch, at all. Nothing you said was relevant to my setup.
